Related to the device.
The general type of belt-type laminator device intended here is
Known in the industry. In general, prior art laminators typically have a face-to-face relationship
Single heating to apply heat to the surface of the thermoplastic sheet while maintaining the sheet in
Includes stations only. These single-step laminators come in many types
Effective for thermoplastic sheet materials, but not for ID or security cards
Certain thermoplastic sheet materials, such as those used, are filled by prior art equipment.
Has special heating and cooling characteristics that are not achieved.
The present invention provides for upper and lower belt assemblies supported in closely spaced adjacent relations.
A two-step laminator device is provided. Lower belt assembly includes first and second rollers
The upper roller assembly includes a stainless steel belt received around the
Teflon-impregnated glass fiber bell received around third and fourth rollers
Including The belt assembly has an input nip where the first and third rollers form an input nip;
The second and fourth rollers form an output nip, and the endless belt is
It is supported by the frame structure as it exists. First and second rollers in place
Fixed, third and fourth rollers can slide relative to first and second rollers
Attached to. The third and fourth rollers move toward the first and second rollers
From their mounted position, spaced apart but pressurized.

The heater is heated to a temperature of about 200 ° C. by an internal cartridge heater. heating
The input nip thus defined defines the first laminating step. No.
Heating located in contact with the upper part of the metal belt adjacent to one roller
The platen is heated to a temperature of about 160 ° C, defining a complete laminating process.
You. Fan-cooled heat sinks pass between them by metal and glass fiber
Positioned adjacent to the output nip for cooling the belt
It is.
In particular, the device is compatible with amorphous copolyester backing sheets, polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Security including bar sheets and security images located between those sheets
Useful for laminating card systems. Security statue covers
Preferably printed on the underside of the sheet by normal thermal dye transfer technology
Thus, the security image is reliably provided between the unchangeable sheets. cover
When viewed through the top surface of the sheet, the back-printed image is visible at its exact location
. Amorphous copolyester and PVC sheet can be heated and pressured without the use of intermediate adhesives
Below is a compatible polymer that effectively melts together. When using the rotating belt,
Transfer covers and backing sheets that overlap between the input nip and the output nip.
Acts to send. The upper sheet is a device with a downward facing cover sheet.
Into the input nip, where the cover sheet is
It is first laminated to the upper backing sheet under the heat and pressure of a roller. First lamine
After mounting, the passages on the adjacent heated platen are pre-laminated while in a fixed position.
The heated sheet is further heated, where it is completely melted or laminated together.
Wear. The melted and laminated sheet was then fan cooled

Two-step laminating, fully laminated under heat alone and then cooled
Providing pre-lamination station, complete laminating
Pair for transporting sheet material through a cooling station and a cooling station
Provision of a laminating device including a surface endless belt; and heated nip, heating
Of a laminating device including a cooled surface plate and a fan-cooled heat sink
In the companion.
Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the description with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Would.
Description of the drawings
The best mode intended to implement the invention is illustrated by the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the laminator device of the present invention;
Figure 2 is its rear view;
Figure 3 is a top view thereof;
FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of FIG. 3 taken along line 4-4.
Description of a good example
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a laminator apparatus of the present invention, generally shown in FIGS.
And indicated at 10. As will be described in more detail later,
Device 10 is a type of sheet material used to construct a security card.
Has the effect of laminating a face-to-face thermoplastic sheet material such as Toriwa
However, the present invention 10 relates to the Minnesota Mining and Manufactur of Saint Paul Minnesota.
US Patent Application No. 08/128484 (
It incorporates the security card system described in
It has been found to be particularly useful for melting.
The security cart system indicated by 12 in FIG.
And a security image (not shown). Security image
It is preferred that the back side be printed on the inside surface of the bar sheet 16, thus it is
It is provided between the laminated sheets 14, 16 when brought together. cover
When viewed through the top side of the sheet, the security image printed on the back
I can. The back and cover sheets 14, 16 are in direct contact and lamination without an interlayer of adhesive.
However, the backing sheet 14 preferably comprises an amorphous copolyester film.
Preferably, the cover sheet 16 includes a rigid polyvinyl chloride film.
. The amorphous copolyester backing sheet 14 is made of titanium dioxide so that it becomes opaque white.
It is preferably colored, while the PVC cover sheet 16 is preferably transparent.
Good. However, other color schemes and arrangements are also suitable. In most cases, back sheet 1
4 is intended to provide most of the rigidity and strength of the assembled card 12
Much thicker than the cover sheet. For example, the back sheet 14 is about 20 to 22 mm
The cover sheet has a thickness of about 7-10 mm, and the thickness of the entire card
The length is about 27-32 mm. The special advantage of the security card 12 is the good connection
PVC and amorphous copolyester at relatively low temperatures, for example at a temperature of about 150 ° C.
This can be achieved between tells. Both amorphous copolyester and PVC are laminated
Softening during the nation process, both shrink on cooling at approximately the same rate,
Can reduce the problems encountered with other existing card materials.
Can be effectively achieved.
The laminator device includes upper and lower belt assemblies designated at 20 and 22.
, They include a bottom wall 24 and parallel front and rear walls 26 and 28, respectively.
Is supported in close-spaced adjacency by the beam assembly.
The lower belt assembly 22 is provided around each of the first and second metal rollers 32 and 34.
A lower belt assembly including a stainless steel belt indicated at 30 received in a box
Body 20 is received around each of third and fourth metal rollers 38,40.
A glass fiber belt impregnated with Teflon, indicated at 36. Stainless steel
Belt 30 and fiberglass belt 36 preferably have a thickness of about 0.003 inches.
Good. Stainless steel belt 30 is manufactured by Belt Technologies of Agawam, MA
Glass fiber belt 36 is available from Greenbelt Indu of Buffalo, NY
Available from stries. Rollers 32, 34, 38, 40 are shafts 32S, 3
Preferably, it includes an aluminum roller having 4S, 38S, 40S. axis
It is noted that 32S and 38S are hollow, while shafts 34S and 40S are not hollow.
Be plucked.
The first and third rollers 32 and 38 of the belt assemblies 20 and 22 are input nip.
And the second and fourth rollers 34, 40 form an output nip.
The endless belts 30, 36 are supported on the frame so that they face each other. No.
The first and second rollers 32, 34 are fixed in place and the third and fourth rollers 38,
40 is slidably movable with respect to the first and second rollers 32 and 34. Special
The axis of each roller has a pair of intervals indicated by 42A, 42B, 42C and 42D.
It can be received through the open bearing mount. Each bearing mount 42 is
Bearings 44A, 44B, 44C, 44 supported in the ringing holder 46
D. Bearings 44A and 44C are made of roller type bearings,
On the other hand, the bearings 44B and 44D are composed of sleeve type bearings. further
, Sleeve bearings 44B and 44D are mounted in a hardened outer sleeve 45
. Each bearing holder 46 has a recess therein for receiving the bearing 44.
