The present invention relates to an apparatus that uses a ball screw motor and an electromagnetic clamping device to clamp and position an electrode at a predetermined position on a workpiece on a head. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Automated welding stations are widely used, for example, in automated production lines. The welding station generally uses a commercially available welding gun mounted on the robot arm. As shown in FIG. 1, a typical welding gun 10 has an upper hand 12 and a lower hand 14 that are movable about a pivot 16. The upper and lower electrode holder arms 18, 20 are mounted in the upper and lower hands, respectively. The upper and lower electrodes 22, 24 are mounted on the upper and lower electrode holder arms, respectively, so that the workpiece 26 can be clamped by the electrode holder arms. The upper hand 12 is turned or moved to a position for holding a workpiece. Next, the upper and lower electrode holder arms apply a clamping force to enable welding. This pivoting and application of the clamping force is generally completed by the pneumatic cylinder 28. In particular, the ram 30 of the pneumatic cylinder is connected to the upper hand 12 and pivots the upper hand about the pivot, thereby moving the electrodes away from and closer to the workpiece. A pneumatic locking device, not shown in FIG. 1, is then adapted to engage the ram to lock the electrode in place. The locking device completely prevents any movement of the electrodes during the welding operation. The widening of the welding beats on the workpiece during the welding operation is due to the movement of the electrodes, leading to incomplete welding. It is therefore important not to move the electrodes during the welding operation. It is therefore desirable to provide a clamping force on the workpiece during welding. When a pneumatic device is used to provide clamping force, pressure build-up may be delayed due to airline length, pressure buildup in the airline, and clogging in the line. For example, in one type of conventional pneumatic locking device, a brake rod having a number of friction wedges extends into a shaft hole at the inner end of the ram. The brake rod has a frustro-conical end that extends axially from the friction wedge. The piston can move the end inside between the friction wedges and can move the wedge to the outer surface along the inner surface of the hole in the ram. The piston is moved into engagement with the brake by injection of pressurized air from the first port, and the locking device is released by injection of pressurized air from the second port. However, a problem with pneumatic locking devices is that the pneumatic device requires special tubing and a compressor to operate. Moreover, the use of pneumatic pressure makes it difficult to apply a uniform clamping force to the workpiece. Therefore, there is a need for an electrode positioning and clamping device that accurately and quickly positions the electrodes during a welding operation and that exerts a large force on the workpiece. The present invention overcomes the problems encountered with pneumatic positioning and locking devices by utilizing a positioning actuator to move the electrodes to a predetermined position on the workpiece and an electromagnetic device to clamp the electrodes on the workpiece. It is. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is therefore a primary object of the present invention to overcome one or more of the disadvantages and limitations of the prior art. It is an important object of the present invention to accurately and quickly position an electrode at a predetermined location on a workpiece, apply a substantial amount of force on the workpiece, and prevent movement of the workpiece during a welding operation. It is to provide a device. According to a broad aspect of the present invention, an improved electrical resistance welding apparatus including a welder having a frame and a hand for moving an electrode for clamping engagement and unclamping with a workpiece is disclosed. It includes an electrode positioning actuator for moving the welding machine hand to move the electrodes for release and an electromagnetic clamping device for clamping the electrodes on the workpiece during welding. The electromagnetic clamping device includes an electromagnet attached to the positioning actuator and a ring of magnetic material attached to the welding machine frame, the electromagnet and the ring typically being in a spaced relationship when the electromagnet is turned off. Yes, the ring is in proximity to the electromagnet when the electrode is in clamp engagement with the workpiece. One feature of the present invention is that the electromagnetic clamping device provides a high clamping force on a workpiece during a welding operation that is easily modified or controlled. Another feature of the present invention is that the positioning actuator device provides accurate positioning of the electrodes on the workpiece. Yet another feature of the present invention is that the positioning actuator provides high speed operation for quickly positioning the electrodes on the workpiece. These and other objects, advantages and features of the present invention will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description of exemplary preferred embodiments and the accompanying drawings and claims. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side view of a conventional welding machine using the present invention. FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the positioning and electromagnetic clamping device of the present invention. FIG. 3 is a block diagram showing a control circuit of the positioning and electromagnetic clamp of the present invention. Description of an Exemplary Preferred Embodiment Referring to FIG. 1, a known welding machine or gun 10 used in a positioning and electromagnetic clamping device 40 is shown. The positioning and electromagnetic clamping device 40 is preferably mounted on the upper hand 12 of the welding machine 10, as shown in FIG. Referring to FIG. 2, the positioning actuator and the electromagnetic device 40 are described in detail. The electromagnetic device 40 is a coupling device that utilizes both the positioning actuator 42 and the clamp device 44. The positioning actuator 42 preferably includes a motor 46 and an acme or ball screw 48, and the electromagnetic clamping device 44 preferably includes an electromagnet 50 and a magnetic ring 52. Motor 46 preferably includes a direct current (DC) motor coupled to ball screw 48. The ball screw 48 is connected to a welding machine hand that positions the electrode at a predetermined position on the workpiece. For example, in the welding machine shown in FIG. 1, the ball screw 48 can be connected to the lower hand 14. Accordingly, the direct current (DC) motor rotates the ball screw 48 to extend and contract the welding machine hand. The pitch of the ball screw and the number of revolutions (RPM) of the motor are selected to match the speed required for positioning the electrodes on the workpiece. It should be noted that if desired, other types of actuators can be used to position the electrodes in conjunction with the electromagnetic clamping device. For example, an electromagnetic actuator, a fluid actuator or a pneumatic actuator can be used as a positioning device in connection with an electromagnetic clamp device. In another embodiment of the present invention, the electromagnetic clamping device 44 includes an electromagnet 50 and a magnetic ring 52. The electromagnet 50 is preferably mounted on the housing 54 of the positioning actuator 42. The electromagnet 50 is also preferably connected directly or indirectly to a welding hand for positioning the electrodes. The electromagnet 50 is preferably mounted coaxially with the positioning actuator 42. The magnetic ring 52 is preferably connected to a frame 56 of the welding head. The magnetic ring 52 has a first outer surface 58 that is substantially planar and extends perpendicular to the axis of movement of the positioning actuator. The electromagnet 50 further includes a core 60 and a coil 62. The core 60 has a first surface 64 that is substantially planar and extends perpendicular to the axis of movement of the positioning actuator. The coil 62 is located in an annular channel 65 on a first surface 64 of the core 60. The core first surface 64 is in a relationship facing the magnetic ring first outer surface 58. When the positioning actuator is in the initial retracted position, the positions of the electromagnet 50 and the magnetic ring 52 are such that the first surface 64 and the first outer surface 58 are close to each other via a predetermined gap 66 that exists between the two surfaces. Is determined as follows. In the disclosed embodiment, the predetermined gap 66 is preferably between 0.5 mm and 1 mm. A magnetic ring 52 and electromagnet 50 are provided to actuate the required forces on the electrodes to hold the positioning actuator in a fully extended position and to hold the electrodes against the workpiece during the welding operation. As described in greater detail below, the electromagnet 50 is actuated by applying a current to the coil 62, the positioning actuator carries the electrode to a predetermined position on the electrode, and the positioning actuator moves to the next welding cycle. The welding operation is terminated so that the electrode can be returned to the contracted position of the electrode, and the electromagnet 50 is stopped. When the electromagnet 50 is turned on, the magnetic force acting on the magnetic ring 52 depends on the size of the electromagnet 50, the gap 66 between the first surface 64 and the surface of the magnetic ring 58, and the first of the magnetic ring. It is determined by the area of the surface 58, the volume of the magnetic ring 58 and the current level in the coil. According to one feature of the invention, the electromagnet 50 and the magnetic ring 58 are coaxially arranged around the positioning actuator, so that the forces acting on the electrodes are evenly distributed. Another feature of the invention is that the current in the coil of the electromagnet can be predetermined, so that the clamping force of the electrode along the workpiece is predetermined and can be varied depending on the material used. With reference to FIG. 3, a control system 68 of the positioning actuator and the electromagnetic clamping device 40 is described. The controller 70 of the control system 68 is connected through a driver 72 to the direct-current (DC) motor 46 of the positioning actuator and through a current amplifier 74 to the electromagnetic clamp device 44. The control system 68 further includes a load cell 76 for feeding force back to the controller 70. The load cell 76 is mounted either outside or inside the positioning actuator 42. The controller 70 receives the feedback from the load cell 76 and dynamically adjusts the current level of the electromagnetic coil 62 to maintain an appropriate pressure of the electromagnetic clamp device 44. The continuous operation of one embodiment of the positioning actuator and the clamping device is described. First, a voltage is applied to the positioning actuator 42 and the welding machine arm of the welding machine is operated to move the electrode to a predetermined position on the workpiece. When the electrode contacts the workpiece, the positioning actuator motor applies approximately 300 pounds of force to the workpiece. Next, a voltage is applied to the electromagnetic clamping device 44 to apply a force across the gap 66 between the first electromagnet core surface 64 and the first magnetic ring outer surface 58. This force is transferred to the electrodes for attachment of the clamping device 44 described above. In the preferred embodiment, the electromagnetic clamping device 44 can provide the 1500 pounds of force required for some types of spot welding. After completion of the welding process, the clamp device 44 is turned off, and the positioning actuator 42 retracts the welding hand and the electrode from the workpiece. Exemplary preferred embodiments of the positioning and electromagnetic clamping device according to the principles of the present invention have been described above. One skilled in the art is not limited to the embodiments described above without departing from the inventive concepts disclosed herein, and will have many benefits. Therefore, the present invention is defined only by the scope of the following claims.
