[0003] A carrier in which the frequency intervals of a plurality of carriers to be used have an integer multiple of 1 / T is called an orthogonal carrier. Further, the period T is called a modulation symbol period. FIG. 8 shows a configuration example of a transmission device and a reception device of a conventional orthogonal frequency multiplex communication device. First, a transmitting device will be described. The input data is converted into 2-bit × 8-series parallel data by a serial / parallel conversion circuit. The 2-bit × 8-series parallel data output from the serial-parallel conversion circuit is QPSK-modulated by eight QPSK modulation circuits arranged in parallel, respectively.
This is output as an eight-series complex modulation signal. The complex modulated signal of eight sequences output from the QPSK modulation circuit is inverse FFT (Fast

That is, when the sampling frequency and the number of FFT points in the inverse FFT circuit are fs and Ns, each input of the inverse FFT circuit has a frequency interval (fs / N
s) corresponds to each complex amplitude of a plurality of carriers. Therefore, if fs, Ns and T are determined so that the frequency interval (fs / Ns) becomes equal to (1 / T), the output of the inverse FFT circuit is a signal of a signal obtained by QPSK-modulating a plurality of carriers having an orthogonal relationship with each other. A time waveform is obtained.

However, the time waveforms of the eight series of signals appear in parallel at the output of the inverse FFT circuit. Therefore, using the parallel-serial conversion circuit, time-series complex serial data is generated from the eight series of parallel signals output from the inverse FFT circuit. The parallel / serial conversion circuit has a guard interval insertion function unique to the OFDM method. For example, in the literature (Masanori Saito, others:
"Multi-level OFDM system for terrestrial digital broadcasting", Technical Report of the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan, Vol.19, No.10, BCS95-3, pp.13-
18, February 1995), the guard interval repeats the time waveform for a certain section. By providing the guard interval, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of intersymbol interference due to multiple delay waves on the receiving side.

Next, the receiving apparatus will be described. The signal received by the antenna is frequency-converted to baseband by a quadrature detector, and further quantized by two A / D converters. The quantized signal is converted into a parallel signal by a serial-parallel conversion circuit, and then Fourier-transformed by an FFT circuit. Sampling frequency and F in the FFT circuit
When the number of FT points is fs and Ns, a signal indicating the complex amplitude of each of a plurality of carrier waves having a frequency interval of (fs / Ns) is obtained at the output of the FFT circuit. Therefore,
If fs and Ns are set to be the same as those of the transmitting device, the complex amplitude of each carrier of the received signal is obtained at the output of the FFT circuit.

The output of the FFT circuit is demodulated by eight QPSK demodulation circuits. Further, the signals output from the respective QPSK demodulation circuits are identified as 2-bit × 8-series data by eight identification circuits. The 2-bit × 8-series data output from the eight discriminating circuits is converted into serial data by the parallel / serial conversion circuit and output. In a line that causes frequency selective fading, the frequency characteristics of the transmission path are not uniform within the transmission band. Therefore, when the OFDM transmission method is not used, waveform distortion occurs and transmission quality is significantly deteriorated.

In the frequency orthogonal multiplex communication apparatus as shown in FIG. 8, a transmission signal spectrum is represented by a sum of a plurality of narrow band signals. Since the transmission line frequency characteristic of the narrow band signal can be regarded as substantially uniform (flat fading) in each band, each narrow band signal can be transmitted without waveform distortion.

In the conventional orthogonal frequency multiplex communication apparatus, if the delay time of the delay wave received by the receiving apparatus is within the guard interval, the code error rate of each narrowband signal is set under the flat fading condition. Is equal to the bit error rate. Therefore, the overall error rate characteristic is no different from the bit error rate characteristic under the flat fading condition, and a high S / N (signal-to-noise power ratio) is required to obtain high transmission quality. That is, high received signal power was required.

In the case of using a line in which frequency-selective fading occurs in which the delay dispersion of the transmission path is large (the frequency correlation of fading is small), a plurality of narrow-band signals included in a signal to be transmitted are substantially independent of fading. Subject to fluctuations. Therefore, in the invention of claim 1, frequency diversity for transmitting the same signal in parallel using two or more carrier frequencies is performed.

According to a second aspect of the present invention, in the orthogonal frequency multiplex communication apparatus according to the first aspect, the number of multi-levels J and the number of systems K of the multi-level modulation means are variably configured, and a radio between the transmitting apparatus and the receiving apparatus is configured. A delay dispersion detecting means for detecting a magnitude of delay dispersion of the propagation path; and a control means for controlling a multilevel number J and a system number K of the multilevel modulation means in accordance with a detection result of the delay dispersion detection means. When the detected delay dispersion is relatively large, the multi-value number J is increased to at least one system to reduce the number K of systems, and when the detected delay dispersion is relatively small, at least one system is decreased. It is characterized in that the multilevel number J is reduced and the system number K is increased.

On the other hand, when the delay dispersion of the transmission line is small, the frequency correlation between the narrow band signals becomes large, and a sufficient diversity gain cannot be obtained. Therefore, in claim 2 of the present invention, the multilevel number J of the modulated signal and the number of carriers (the number of diversity branches: the same as the number of systems K) for transmitting the same signal are reduced in accordance with the detected delay dispersion. By this control, deterioration of transmission quality when delay dispersion is small is automatically avoided, and more stable communication becomes possible.

When a conventional delay dispersion discriminating circuit as disclosed in JP-A-5-276059 is used, a special signal such as a synchronization word is transmitted from the transmission device to the reception device in order to detect the delay dispersion. This necessitates complicated communication control and lowers transmission efficiency. According to the third aspect of the present invention, there is no need to transmit a special signal such as a synchronization word from the transmitting device to the receiving device. When a line in which frequency-selective fading occurs is used, a plurality of narrow-band signals included in a signal to be transmitted are subject to almost independent fading fluctuations. Therefore, the reception levels of the plurality of narrowband signals become uneven. That is, the magnitude of the delay dispersion can be detected by identifying the non-uniformity (variation) of the reception levels of the plurality of narrowband signals detected by the level detection means.

The complex modulated signals of the four systems output by 3 and 104 are inverse F
The signal is input to the FT circuit 105. Here, each complex modulated signal is branched into two systems, and the two branched complex modulated signals are input to mutually different input terminals of the inverse FFT circuit 105. That is, the complex modulation signal output from the 16QAM modulation circuit 101 is split into two signals S11 and S12, and the complex modulation signal output from the 16QAM modulation circuit 102 is split into two signals S21 and S22.
The complex modulation signal output from the QAM modulation circuit 103 is split into two signals S31 and S32, and the complex modulation signal output from the 16QAM modulation circuit 104 is converted into two signals S41 and S41.
The signal branches to S42, and the respective signals S11, S12, S
21, S22, S31, S32, S41 and S42 are input to the inverse FFT circuit 105.

The level detection circuits 311 to 318
The levels of the carrier waves of the eight signals output from the circuit 116 are monitored. Signals indicating the respective carrier levels of the eight signals detected by the level detection circuits 311 to 318 are input to the arithmetic circuit 321. The arithmetic circuit 321 includes:
From the input signals, the variances of the carrier levels of the eight signals are calculated. When the delay dispersion of the received signal is small, the carrier levels of the eight signals are uniform, but when the delay dispersion is large, the carrier levels of the eight signals are non-uniform. Accordingly, the dispersion of the carrier levels of the eight signals calculated by the arithmetic circuit 321 indicates a value corresponding to the magnitude of the delay dispersion of the received signal.

The arithmetic circuit 321 compares the detected value of the delay dispersion with a predetermined threshold value to identify the magnitude of the delay dispersion in a binary manner. The result of this identification is output as a control signal. This control signal is applied to the control circuit 250 shown in FIG. Since the arithmetic circuit 321 periodically detects the delay dispersion, the control signal is sequentially updated in response to a change in the state of the communication line.

In this embodiment, the delay dispersion of the received signal is obtained from the dispersion of the carrier levels of the eight signals, but the delay dispersion can be detected by using another method. For example, the delay dispersion may be calculated from the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of the carrier levels of a plurality of signals.

According to the second aspect of the present invention, good communication quality is maintained irrespective of the magnitude of delay dispersion. Furthermore, according to the third aspect of the present invention, it is not necessary to transmit a special signal for detecting delay dispersion, so that a reduction in transmission efficiency can be avoided. According to the fourth aspect of the present invention, when the multilevel number J and the number of systems K are switched according to the detection result of the delay dispersion detecting means, a special control signal is transmitted from one communication device to the communication device of the communication partner. Therefore, it is easy to make the multilevel number J and the system number K coincide with each other.
