Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering wheel using a thermoplastic resin prevented from cracking by cooling after infection molding and having good adhesion to a decorative material. SOLUTION: Of thermoplastic resin, ABS resin 8 essentially has good adhesion to a garnish material 9. Its thermal expansion coefficient is different from that of a metal serving as a core metal, but by containing 5 to 15 wt.% glass fiber, strength is increased, a crack is prevented even by cooling after injection molding. Further, a content of the glass fiber is in a range without impeding fluidity when the ABS resin 8 is in injection molding.

2. Description of the Related Art There is known a steering wheel in which a rim portion of a steering wheel is coated with a hard resin, and a surface of the rim portion is decorated with, for example, a wood-grain decorative material.
See Japanese Utility Model Publication No. 54-1697). In the case of this type of steering wheel, the hard resin coating the rim portion is a thermosetting resin and cannot be injection-molded, and is not suitable for mass production. Therefore, it is conceivable to cover the rim portion with a thermoplastic resin that can be injection molded.

However, the thermoplastic resin generally has a large difference in thermal expansion coefficient from the metal used as the core metal, and there is a possibility that the thermoplastic resin may be broken by cooling after injection molding. In addition, there is a problem in adhesion to a decorative material applied to the surface.

According to the first aspect of the present invention, among thermoplastic resins, ABS resin inherently has good adhesion to the decorative material. In addition, although the coefficient of thermal expansion with the metal serving as the core metal is different,
Since the glass fiber is contained in an amount of 5 to 15 wt%, the strength is increased, and the glass fiber is not broken even when cooled after injection molding. The content of the glass fiber is also within a range that does not impair the flowability of the ABS resin during injection molding. The preferred glass fiber-containing ABS resin has the following properties in order to satisfy the workability of injection molding and the resistance to environmental stress cracking.

A part of the rim part 2 and a part of the spoke part 4 are covered with an ABS resin 8 as a thermoplastic resin. The ABS resin 8 contains 10 wt% of glass fiber. The surface of the ABS resin 8 is provided with a wood-grain decorative material 9. The decorative material 12 is formed by a fluid printing method.

Next, a method of manufacturing the steering wheel 1 will be described. First, the core metals 5 and 6 of the rim portion 2 and the spoke portion 4 are set in an injection mold, and an ABS resin 8 containing glass fibers is injected into the mold. There are a total of three gates G for injecting the ABS resin 8.

As shown in FIG. 3, the outer diameter D of the metal core 5 in the rim portion 2 is 12 mmφ, the minimum thickness d1 of the ABS resin 8 is 6 mm, and the maximum thickness d2 is 10 mm. The minimum thickness d1 is the narrowest passage of the ABS resin 8 in the mold. Since the minimum thickness d1 is 6 mm, the fluidity of the ABS resin 8 into the mold is sufficiently ensured. . As described above, the ABS resin 8 that covers the core metal 5 and the like of the rim portion 2 can be formed by injection molding that can be mass-produced.

Next, a wood-grain decorative material 9 is applied to the surface of the ABS resin 8 by a fluid printing method. At this time, the degree to which the glass fiber is exposed varies depending on the content thereof, but the tip of the fiber is exposed on the surface of the rim portion 2. A coating is formed to cover the fibers. Thereafter, the surface of the coating film is polished by sanding with sandpaper or the like to smooth the entire surface of the rim portion 2. In particular, when the print coating is as thin as several microns, the surface is smoothed to prevent the exposed glass fibers from breaking the print coating. A
Since the BS resin 8 inherently has good adhesion to the decorating material 9, the decorating material 9 can be securely bonded. Finally, a pad is attached to the base 7 to form the boss 3 and the steering wheel 1 is completed.
