Detailed description
Figure 1 shows Nx*Ny separately addressable picture elements or pixels
Of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display panel with a rectangular array of
It is shown schematically. The panel contains two linear polarizers 2 and 16, which are linear polarizers.
The linear polarizer 16 is positioned so as to face the outer surface of the lath substrate 4 and
Positioned facing the outer surface. Polarizer 2 has a polarization direction 3 and polarizer 16 is polarized.
It has a polarization direction 15 orthogonal to the light direction 3. Rectangular electrodes of separate transparent pixel electrodes
The ray is arranged on the inner surface of the glass substrate 4, and the single continuous transparent common electrode 12 is
It is arranged on the inner surface of the lath substrate 14. Only one pixel electrode labeled 6 is shown in FIG.
Shown in. The liquid crystal cell 9 is transparent to each transparent pixel electrode 6.
It is defined between the electrode 12. Liquid crystal cell 9 is a pixel of a liquid crystal display panel
Corresponds to position.
For convenience of description below, the panels are arranged vertically and the polarization direction 3 is horizontal.
Is assumed.
The panel is viewed from the side of the polarizer 16 away from the substrate 14. Light source (not shown)
() Is the light beam incident on the polarizer 2 perpendicular to the plane of the display panel.
The light transmitted by the polarizer 2 is given by the glass substrate 4, the transparent electrode 6, and the liquid crystal cell.
Is transmitted to the polarizer 16 through the transparent electrode 12, the transparent electrode 12, and the glass substrate 14.
The liquid crystal cell 9 contains molecules 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, and
And liquid crystal molecules schematically represented as 34. Liquid crystal molecules consist of electrode 6 and electrode 1.
It is shown in FIG. 1 in the typical orientations they assume when there is no potential difference between them. This
In the condition, the molecules are oriented transverse to the normal to the display panel. Minute
The orientation of the child has two components known as twist and tilt. Twist is de
Refers to the molecular orientation about the normal of the display panel, the twist angle is denoted as β
. Tilt is the angular position of a molecule with respect to a plane that is perpendicular to the perpendicular of the display panel.
The tilt angle is indicated as α. Generally, the twist angle depends on the electric field existing in the cell
However, the tilt angle depends on the electric field. Adjacent to electrodes 6 and 12, respectively
The children 18 and 34 are bonded to the substrates 4 and 16 and their orientation is substantially fixed.
doing.
The twist angle depends on the treatment of the surfaces of the glass substrates 4 and 14. Place of glass substrate
The reason is that the molecules 18 are oriented parallel to the linear polarization direction 3 of the polarizer 2, that is, horizontally.
, And the molecules 34 are aligned parallel to the linear polarization direction 15 of the polarizer 16, that is, vertically.
It is done as is done. Thus, the molecule 18
20-32 has a tendency to have a twist angle that is intermediate between the twist angles of two adjacent molecules
Having. For example, the molecule 20 is relative to the molecule 18 and the twist angle of the molecule 34
It is rotated in the counterclockwise direction (towards the direction of the light beam 1). Molecule 22 and
24 continuously increases the twist angle. Molecule 26 is the twist angle of molecule 18 and molecule 3
It has a twist angle intermediate between those of 4 and 4.
Each of molecules 18 and 34 is α0It is oriented at a tilt angle of. Electrode 6 and electrode 12
Tilt with distance from substrates 4 and 14 when no electric field is applied between
Have a tendency to decrease. The tilt angle of the molecule 20 is smaller than the tilt angle of the molecule 18.
Molecules 22 and 24 continuously reduce the tilt angle.
The light transmitted by the polarizer 2 is plane polarized in the direction 3 and
It passes through the transparent electrode 6. When passing through the liquid crystal cell 9 under the conditions shown in FIG.
Of the polarized light
The liquid crystal cell is rotated gradually until it leaves. Plane polarized
The reflected light passes through the transparent electrode 12 and the glass substrate 14, and its polarization direction is the liquid crystal cell.
Reach the polarizer 16 which is aligned in the plane of polarization of the light present at 9.
In this way, the polarizer 16 allows polarized light to pass through and is viewed from outside the panel.
Gives a white appearance when applied.
When an electric field is applied to a twisted nematic cell, it is spaced from the cell boundaries.
The liquid crystal molecules tend to orient themselves parallel to the applied electric field. Figure
2 shows the liquid crystal cell 9 under the condition that an electric field exists between the electrode 6 and the electrode 12. Figure
2, the molecule 20 has a larger tilt angle compared to the molecule 20 of FIG.
Is shown. Molecule 22 has a larger tilt angle and each of molecules 24, 26 and 28
The maximum tilt angle αmaxHaving.
When the electric field related to the liquid crystal cell is slightly large, the maximum tilt angle αmaxIs greater than
, At the limit of the electric field, the molecules of all cells except the molecules bound to the outer surface of the liquid crystal cell
Become oriented in the direction of the applied electric field. Therefore, the majority of molecules
Are aligned with the vertical line of the panel, and increasing the electric field further affects the maximum tilt angle.
Not done. Fig. 3 shows molecules that are mainly parallel to the vertical line of the liquid crystal display panel.
A liquid whose molecules are oriented by an electric field that is large enough to create the orientation.
Crystal cell 9 is shown. Under this condition, the polarization direction of the light entering the cell depends on the propagation in the cell.
Not significantly affected, the polarizer 16 blocks the light transmitted by the cell. I
Therefore, the cells appear opaque to the observer. For the operation of this aspect, FIG.
A liquid crystal display panel of the type described with reference to 3 is normally a white display.
It is called a play panel.
FIG. 4 shows a liquid crystal cell that corresponds to each pixel position of the liquid crystal display panel.

The contrast ratio of the LCD cell in any given viewing direction is
The cell is in the white state for the brightness of the cell in a given viewing direction when in the state
Is defined as the ratio of the brightness of the cell in a given viewing direction when (ie
(Contrast ratio = white brightness / black brightness). Figure 5 is a function of the angle in the horizontal plane
Thus, it normally exhibits a change in the brightness of a white liquid crystal display cell. Song of Figure 5
Line 66 shows that the white brightness has a maximum in the viewing direction, which is normally perpendicular to the display panel.
However, it is somewhat dependent on the observation angle. As shown in Figure 3, the electric field causes the panel to drop.
When the line is sufficient to align the majority of the molecules, it is shown by curve 68 in FIG.
As shown, the black luminance has a minimum value in the viewing direction perpendicular to the display panel.
, Changes significantly with the viewing direction. Therefore, the contrast ratio (see FIG.
, Curve 70) also changes with the viewing direction, and the maximum contrast viewing direction (contra
The viewing direction where the strike ratio is maximum) is perpendicular to the display panel.
The orientation of liquid crystal molecules in the black state depends on the electric field existing in the cell in the black state,
Brightness affects the direction seen by the viewer. Therefore, in the black state
The electric field in can be used to adjust the maximum contrast viewing angle.
An electric field E slightly lower than the electric field for generating the curve 68 in FIG.1Then the minimum brightness
Is on one side of the perpendicular, eg, to the right of the perpendicular as shown by curve 72 in FIG.
Seen on the side, the maximum contrast ratio is as represented by the dotted curve 64 in FIG.
It occurs at 40 ° to the right of the normal. The electric field in the liquid crystal cell in the black state is set to the second value E2
When turned up, the minimum brightness is seen slightly to the right (curve 76) and the maximum contrast
Strike
The ratio occurs 20 ° to the right of the normal as represented by the dotted curve 62.
Therefore, changing the voltage applied between the electrodes 6 and 12 of the liquid crystal cell
Allows you to adjust the angle of the horizontal plane where the maximum contrast ratio occurs
I understand. Therefore, referring again to FIG. 4, the maximum contrast viewing angle is
It can be changed by adjusting the variable voltage source 52.
Figure 7 shows a large number of coplanar liquids so that every panel is viewed from the same viewing position.
To redirect the maximum contrast viewing angle for crystal display panels
Show. The user 90 is in front of the LCD panel 86, to the left of the LCD panel 88, and to the L
Positioned to the right of CD panels 82 and 84. Under its normal operating conditions
In a typical LCD panel, the maximum contrast viewing angle is perpendicular to the panel. Figure
In the screen configuration shown in FIG. 7, the maximum contrast for the LCD panel 82 is
If the viewing angle is vertical (ie Θ = 0 °), the user 90
The display is unreadable or has poor contrast.
It will be necessary. As a result, the user's eye fatigue increases and the display information
Information is more likely to be misinterpreted. Problems in observing low contrast
The voltage used on the LCD panel 82 to establish a black state to remove the
But the maximum contrast observation angle ΘThreeWill bring
Therefore, the user 90 will display at the maximum contrast viewing angle.
You can observe b. Similarly, the voltage used in the display panel 84
However, the maximum contrast is the observation angle Θ2Display panel selected to occur in
The voltage used at 88 is the maximum contrast and the viewing angle Θ1Choose to happen in
Is done. In the mode described with reference to FIG. 6, the maximum contrast observation angle is the electric field.
In the case of an LCD panel that changes together, the maximum contrast is1Bring in
As such, it may be necessary to rotate the panel. User 90
Positioned directly in front of panel 86, the voltage across LCD 86 is
The last is as seen in the direction normal to the display screen. I
Thus, a single user can view many spatially spaced screens in the same view.
It can be observed from the observation position.
FIG. 8 shows multiple display panels viewed simultaneously by multiple users.
You. User 96 is positioned just in front of display panel 94 and user 98
Is positioned immediately in front of the display panel 92. User 96
It is located at a viewing angle of 60 ° from the vertical line of the panel 92, and the user 98
It is located at an observation angle of 60 ° from the perpendicular of the flannel 94. Adjust maximum contrast viewing angle
By setting the maximum contrast for the display panel 92, for example.
The viewing angle is adjusted to 30 ° to the left of the vertical,
The panel 94 is adjusted to a maximum contrast observation angle of 30 ° to the right of the normal 30 °.
Both display panels can be viewed by both users in a better way.
The maximum contrast viewing angle for either display panel is user 96 or
Is not optimal for user 98, but has maximum contrast between two users
By having a viewing direction, each user can effectively read each screen
Sufficient contrast is provided at each user position so that
In an alternative situation, user 96 could read both panels 92 and 94.
Required, and user 98 should only read panel 92 directly in front of him.
If required, panel 94 is the maximum contrast normal to the display panel.
Adjusted to have a viewing angle and the display panel 92 is
Adjusted to provide a maximum contrast viewing angle that is midway between the user's viewing directions.
It is.
Maximum contrast viewing angle also limits user's display viewing
It is adjustable. For example, when displaying sensitive information, only one user
It may be desirable to read the spray panel. Therefore, the maximum control
The last viewing angle can be adjusted outside the effective viewing range of the second user, which allows
Unauthorized reads are minimized.
This invention is not limited to the particular embodiments described and illustrated.
The scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims and their equivalents
It will be appreciated that modifications can be made without departing from. For example, this invention is
Although described with reference to a white LCD display panel, the two polarizers
Instead of being at a right angle, they are oriented parallel to each other and thus an electric field between the electrodes
The light transmitted by the LCD cell when not applied is blocked by the second polarizer.
The present invention can be applied to a so-called black panel which is normally black. Normally
For a black LCD panel, adjusting the voltage applied to the cell in the white state is
This affects the viewing direction where high brightness is seen, and in this way, the display panel
Establish a maximum contrast viewing direction other than vertical. Furthermore, this invention
It is not constrained to the maximum contrast viewing direction shifted in the horizontal plane. Why
, The maximum contrast by rotating the liquid crystal panel about its normal.
This is because the direction in which is seen rotates in the same way and draws a conical surface.
