Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for a special process for forming a black grating, and to reduce the cost and the accumulation of a mask positioning error by adhering the same material with color filter elements even in a border area between the color filter elements. SOLUTION: In the process for forming the color filter elements of R, G, and B, color filter materials are adhered even in border areas among the color filter elements 1-3, i.e., the part where the black grating 4 is formed in addition to the parts of the color filter elements 1-3 of the respective colors. In this case, the same method as before is applicable to the filter materials and their adhering method itself, and the patterns of masks used for the respective processes are only changed so that the filter materials are adhered even to the part where the black grating 4 is formed. After those processes are completed, the filters of R, G< and B overlap with one another at the part where the black grating 4 is formed, so substantially the same effect as the adhesion of a black material is obtained by the principle of subtractive color mixture to transmitted light.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a color filter for displaying a color image using a monochrome display device, and in particular, it selectively illuminates a large number of pixel positions arranged in a matrix to form an arbitrary figure. The type to display,

2. Description of the Related Art As shown in FIG. 1, a color filter for a liquid crystal color display device has three primary colors, that is, red (R), green (G) and blue (B) on a transparent substrate such as glass.
The minute color filter elements 1, 2, and 3 are formed in a mosaic shape so as to be alternately arranged. Further, a black grid 4 is formed so as to separate these color filter elements. ing. If the peripheral portion of the light flux that should pass through a certain color filter element protrudes into the adjacent color filter element, it will appear to the human eye to be slightly different from the expected color, resulting in poor display color quality. However, the black grid 4 has an effect of preventing it.

Conventionally, the black grid 4 is formed by sequentially forming the R, G, and B color filter elements 1, 2, and 3 using masks for the respective color filter elements, and then using a mask for the black grid. It was formed by depositing a black material.

In the above-mentioned conventional manufacturing method, one step is added to form the black lattice, and moreover, the mask must be accurately positioned for that purpose. This not only raises the cost, but also increases the chances of mask positioning errors, which in turn increases the rate of quality degradation. An object of the present invention is to eliminate the above-mentioned drawbacks of the conventional manufacturing method.

According to the present invention, in each step of forming a color filter element of each primary color, a portion where a black lattice is to be formed, that is, a boundary region between the color filter elements, The same material as the color filter element is applied. As a result, in the boundary area, the filter effects of the primary colors are superimposed, so that the effect of subtracting the color mixture is virtually the same as when a black material is applied, and a special black grid is formed. Process becomes unnecessary.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION (a), (b) and (c) of FIG.
Shows areas where filter material is deposited in the steps of forming R, G and B color filter elements, respectively, when manufacturing a color filter of the same type as that shown in FIG. 1 according to the present invention. That is, in each step, in addition to the portions of the color filter elements 1, 2 and 3 (shown by hatching) of the color, the boundary area between the color filter elements, that is, the portion where the black grid 4 is to be formed. Also deposit the filter material of that color.

The filter material and its deposition method itself may be the same as the conventional one, but the pattern of the mask used in each step is also deposited on the portion where the black grating 4 is to be formed. You can change it to something like this.

When these three steps are completed, the R, G and B filters are overlapped at the portion where the black grating 4 is to be formed, so that the transmitted light is made of the black material by the principle of subtractive color mixing. It's essentially the same as it was deposited. Therefore, no special process is required to form the black grid.

According to the present invention, the cost is reduced because there is no special process for forming the black lattice. In addition, the absence of the black grid forming step means that there is no mask positioning work for that purpose, so that the accumulation of mask positioning errors is correspondingly reduced, and the product quality is improved.
