Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a black coating compsn. which has high light-screening properties and a good applicability by compounding a polymer material with a light-screening material having a plural particle size distribution. SOLUTION: A suitable light-screening material is carbon black or titanium black and has a particle size of 500nm or lower. Though not specifically limited, the lower limit of the particle size is usually 5nm. The plural distribution of the particle size is composed of a particle size distribution having a certain mean particle size and at least one particle size distribution having a mean particle size lower than that of the foregoing distribution. The ratio of the larger mean particle size to the smaller one is about 4 or higher but pref. not higher than 50, and the larger one is 50nm or higher. The amt. of the particles belonging to the smaller particle size distribution is 1-40wt.% of the total amt. of the particles. The compounding ratio by wt. of the light-screening material to the polymer material is (10/90)-(80/20).

2. Description of the Related Art In a color filter used for a liquid crystal display device or the like,
In order to improve the contrast and color purity, or to prevent light from leaking to the switching element, etc., for example, light shielding called a black matrix is formed in the gap between each transparent colored fine pattern of red, green and blue formed on the transparent substrate. It is known to provide a light-blocking thin film, or to provide a light-blocking thin film that blocks unnecessary light on the substrate arranged on the switching element.

The light-shielding thin film has good adhesion to the substrate, heat resistance,
It is required to have excellent water resistance, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, and the like, as well as higher light-shielding properties. As a raw material for forming such a light-shielding thin film, metal-based and resin-based materials are mainly used. As the metal-based material, chromium or the like is used, and as the resin-based material, a composition containing a polymer material such as resin and a light-shielding material such as carbon black is used. Of these, metal materials such as chrome
Due to problems such as pollution, high light reflectance of the formed light-shielding thin film, and high manufacturing cost, resin-based materials are currently drawing attention.

However, the resin-based material has a problem that it is inferior to the metal-based material in terms of light-shielding property. It is effective to increase the amount of the light-shielding material added to obtain high light-shielding properties using the resin-based material. However, increasing the amount of the light-shielding material increases the viscosity of the resin-based material. There is a problem that the workability is significantly reduced and the productivity of the color filter is reduced. For these reasons, there is a strong demand for the development of a resin-based material having a high light-shielding property and an excellent coating workability.

Such a light-shielding material is prepared, for example, by appropriately selecting the method, conditions, etc. so that the particle size distribution becomes the above distribution when adjusting the powder particles to a desired particle size. Alternatively, it can be prepared by appropriately selecting the conditions of the sieve fraction. Further, for example, two or more kinds of powder particles, which are adjusted to have a desired particle size by a normal method and have a normal particle size distribution, but have different average particle sizes, are prepared.
It can also be prepared by appropriately mixing them. In this case, the type of the light-shielding material in each of the powder particles to be blended may be the same or different, but it is preferable that the ratio of the average particle diameters be a predetermined value or small. Blending is performed so that the amount of powder particles in the particle size distribution becomes a predetermined value.
