ャネル案内リストから自動的に探し出すこと。 【解決手段】 将来送信されるテレビ番組の少なくとも
番組タイトル情報が前もって送信されてチャネル案内リ
ストを構成するテレビジョン・システムにおいて、ユー
ザの視聴の好みに関するある種の基準を満たす特定のテ
レビ番組を自動的に探し出す。この装置は、そのサーチ
が成功して完了すると、サーチしたテレビ番組のリスト
を生成し、視聴者が興味を持つと思われる番組を予測す
る。この装置はユーザが今までに見たテレビ番組に関す
る情報を上記サーチの基準として格納しておく。また、
そのサーチ基準はユーザが編集できるようになってい
る。

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は将来のある日に見た
り、録画したりするためにテレビ番組（テレビジョン・
プログラム）の選択をスケジュールするスケジューラ装
置およびその方法に関する。
【０００２】なお、本明細書の記述は本件出願の優先権
の基礎たる米国特許出願第６０／００６，８８８号（１
９９５年１１月１７日出願）および米国特許出願第０８
／５７３，１１３号（１９９５年１２月１５日出願）の
明細書の記載に基づくものであって、当該米国特許出願
の番号を参照することによって当該米国特許出願の明細
書の記載内容が本明細書の一部分を構成するものとす
る。
【０００３】
【従来の技術】見たいテレビ番組を選択することは、利
用可能なチャネルの数が最近では劇的に増加しているこ
とから、ますます難しくなっている。例えば、ＲＣＡ
（登録商標）ＤＳＳ（登録商標）直接放送衛星受信装置
では、選択できるチャネルの数が１５０チャネルにもな
っている。今まで、「なにが放送されるか」をユーザ
（視聴者）が知りたいときは、ユーザができることとし
ては、ことによってはユーザの興味を刺激するような番
組が見つかるのではないかと期待して、地元の新聞に印
刷されているテレビ番組予定表（テレビジョン・スケジ
ュール）を調べるのがせいぜいであった。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】このようなやり方は、
調査対象のテレビチャネル予定表がわずかなチャンネル
数であるときは効果的であるかもしれないが、テレビ・
チャネルが１５０チャネルもあるときは、ある時刻に
「なにが放送されるか」を見るだけでも、視聴者が１５
０チャネルの予定表全体を調べることは不可能であろ
う。このような調査作業は、番組のすべてが種類（カテ
ゴリ）別にリストされているような場合であっても敬遠
されるものであった。視聴者は、おびただしい利用可能
な番組の中で自分が興味のある番組はほんのわずかであ
ることに気づくことがある。つまり、その視聴者によっ
て無価値のものは価値のあるものよりも圧倒的に多く、
価値のあるものはその陰に隠される傾向がある。その結
果として、チャネル数が増加していくと、望みの番組を
短時間で見つける成功率はますます乏しくなっていく。
【０００５】本発明の目的は、上述の点に鑑みて、視聴
者が興味をもっている番組特性を有するテレビ番組をチ
ャネル案内リストから自動的に探し出して通知してくれ
る装置および方法を提供することにある。
【０００６】
【課題を解決するための手段】上記目的を達成するた
め、本発明は、将来放映される予定のテレビ番組の少な
くとも番組タイトル情報が前もって送信されて、チャネ
ル案内リストを構成するようにしたテレビジョン・シス
テムにおいて、ユーザの視聴の好みについてのある基準
を満たす特定のテレビ番組を探し出し、そのサーチが無
事に成功して完了すると、その視聴者が興味を示すと思
われる、ある種の番組を視聴者に予報するためにそのよ
うなテレビ番組のリストを生成する装置を提供する。本
発明の一形態では、この装置はユーザが見た特定のテレ
ビ番組のショーに関する情報をサーチ基準として記憶し
ておく。本発明の他の形態では、そのサーチ基準は、サ
ーチをもっときめ細かくするために、ユーザが編集する
ことが可能になっている。

【発明の実施の形態】以下、図面を参照して、本発明の
実施の形態を詳細に説明する。
【０００８】ＲＣＡ（登録商標）ＤＳＳ（登録商標）直
接放送衛星システムやStarsight(登録商標）などのよう
なテレビジョン・システムでは、加入者のテレビジョン
受信装置に表示されるチャネル案内（チャネル・ガイ
ド）を送信している。
【０００９】図１は、例えば、Thomson Consumer Elect
ronics, Inc.（米国インディアナ州インディアナポリ
ス）製のＲＣＡ（登録商標）DSS （登録商標）直接放送
衛星受信システムから得られた番組案内の画面表示（プ
ログラム・ガイド・スクリーン・ディスプレイ）１１０
を示している。ユーザは、カーソル（リモート・コント
ロールの上向き、下向き、右向きおよび左向きのコント
ロール・キー（図示せず）の操作を通して）を、望みの
番組の名前を収めている番組案内画面表示のブロック
（区枠）まで動かすことによって、番組案内の中から１
つの番組を見るために選択している。リモート・コント
ロールの選択キー（SELECTキー）が押されると、カーソ
ルの現在のｘ、ｙ位置が評価されて、バーチャル（仮
想）チャネルと番組時間情報が導出されるようになって
いる。図１の例では、特定のテレビ番組（テレビジョン
・ショー）、CINE SATURDAY NIGHT MOVIE ：ZULU（CINE
土曜夜の映画：ズールー）がハイライトされ、リモート
・コントロール・ユニット（例えば、図４の４５０Ｒ）
上のカーソル・キーを使用することによって選択される
ようになっている。このハイライト（強調）は図１に番
組タイトルを取り囲む太線の枠によって示されている。
通常、選択キーを押すと、関係の番組データがプログラ
ミング・ユニットへ転送される。また図１に示すよう
に、補助的テキスト・ディスプレイ（文字表示）１２０
も表示されているのに注意されたい。この補助的テキス
ト・ディスプレイ１２０には、ハイライトされたテレビ
番組に関する追加のデータが入っている。チャネル案内
画面１１０と補助的テキスト・ディスプレイ１２０から
得られるデータの別の使い方については以下で説明す
る。
【００１０】図２は、画面表示として生成することがで
きる「予測エージェント・リスト(predictive agent li
st) 」または「視聴アイテム・リスト(viewed item lis
t)」２１０を示している。テレビ番組が一定の時間期
間、例えば、５分またはそれ以上の間見られていると、
本発明の装置によって自動的にこの予測エージェント・
リストにデータ（視聴データ）が格納される。このよう
にすると、ユーザの視聴習慣が記録にとられるので、こ
の記録結果を手引として、近い将来に放送されるどの番
組に視聴者が関心を持つかを装置に予測させることが可
能になる。
【００１１】予測エージェント・リスト２１０は一例と
して図２に示されているように構成される。図２に示す
例では、視聴者は７つの映画を現在までに見ている。
（テレビ番組のタイプで映画は「トピック(topic) 」と
呼ばれる大まかな分類に属する。）最後の映画は１９９
５年１１月１５日に見られている。これらの７つの映画
のうち、テーマが「コメディ」である映画は３つ、テー
マが「ドラマ」である映画は４つである。最後のコメデ
ィは１９９５年１１月１５日に見られ、最後のドラマは
１９９５年９月２７日に見られている。また、視聴者
は"The Simpsons （シンプソン夫人）" というタイトル
のテレビ番組の作品を２１回も見ている。なお、各アイ
テムがロックされているか、ロック解除されているかの
指示も、この予測エージェント・リスト（視聴アイテム
・リスト）に格納される。視聴者は、ある特定のアイテ
ムが最近見られていないときに、システムがそのアイテ
ムを自動的に削除するのを防止するために、そのアイテ
ムをロックしておくことが可能である。さらに、ユーザ
（視聴者）は視聴アイテム・リストを編集することで、
予測されるテレビ番組のためのもっと良いフィルタを提
供することも可能である（図８を参照）。
【００１２】視聴アイテム・リストの自動ローディング
は図３のフローチャートに示されているが、そこでは、
ステップ３００でルーチンに入るようになっている。ス
テップ３００で、同調器（チューナ）が少なくとも５分
間、現在のチャネルにチューニング（同調）されていた
かどうかを確かめるチェックが行われる。チューニング
が５分を満していなければ、ルーチンはステップ３１０
で終了する。チューニングが５分以上であれば、ルーチ
ンはステップ３２０へ進み、視聴アイテム・リストをメ
モリから取り出す。ステップ３２５で、現在表示されて
いるテレビ番組に一致するアイテムが視聴アイテム・リ
スト内にすでに存在するかどうかを確かめるチェックが
行われる。もし、一致するアイテムが存在すれば、その
アイテムのカウントをインクリメントし、ルーチンはス
テップ３３５で終了する。現在見られているテレビ番組
に一致するアイテムが視聴アイテム・リスト内にまだ存
在しなければ、ルーチンはステップ３４０へ進む。ステ
ップ３４０で、視聴アイテム・リストが一杯かどうかを
確かめるチェックが行われる。このリストが一杯でなけ
れば、現在見られているテレビ番組を示すデータが視聴
アイテム・リストに追加され、ルーチンはステップ３３
５で終了する。
【００１３】視聴アイテム・リストが一杯であるとステ
ップ３４０で判断されたときには、ステップ３５０で、
ルーチンはリストの中で最も過去に視聴されたアイテム
を読み取ることになる。ステップ３５５で、そのアイテ
ムがロックされているかどうかを確かめるチェックが行
われる。そのアイテムがロックされていれば、これは視
聴者がそのアイテムの削除を望んでいないことを意味す
るので、ルーチンはループしてステップ３６０へ戻り、
最も過去に視聴された次のアイテムをそのリストから取
り出す。今度は、そのアイテムがステップ３５５でチェ
ックされ、そのアイテムがロックされているかどうかが
確かめられる。そのアイテムがロックされていなけれ
ば、ルーチンはステップ３６５へ進み、そこで、そのア
イテムがリストから削除されるので、視聴アイテム・リ
ストに空きスペースが生じることになる。そのあと、ル
ーチンはステップ３４５へ進み、新しいアイテムを視聴
アイテム・リストに追加し、ステップ３３５で終了す
る。
【００１４】視聴者は、ある時刻に「なにが放送される
か」を確かめるためにサーチを要求することができる
（図６を参照）。そのサーチの結果は、ユーザにとって
関心があると思われるテレビ番組の予測リストになって
いる。この予測リストは、文字画面表示（オンスクリー
ン・ディスプレイ）を通してユーザに表示される（図７
を参照）。この表示されるリストは、例えば、特定タイ
プのショーが今までに見られた回数の降順にといったよ
うに、「重みを付けた」方法で表示することが可能であ
る。この予測リストの生成は図５のフローチャートに示
されている。
【００１５】上述したように、上述した対話文または確
認文を作るために本発明の装置のコントローラによって
使用されるチャネル案内データは衛星テレビジョン通信
システムから受信することが可能である。図４はそのよ
うな衛星テレビジョン通信システムを示しており、そこ
では、衛星４００Ｓはオーディオ（音声）、ビデオ（映
像）、またはデータ情報を表す信号を地球基地局の送信
装置４００Ｔから受信している。この衛星はこの信号を
増幅し、特定の周波数で動作し、一定のバンド幅をもつ
トランスポンダを経由して、消費者の住宅に置かれた複
数の受信装置（テレビ受信機）４００Ｒへ再放送してい
る。この種のシステムは、アップリンク伝送部分（地上
から衛星へ）、地球を回る衛星の送受信ユニット、およ
びユーザの住宅に置かれた受信装置を含むダウンリンク
部分（衛星から地上へ）から構成されている。
【００１６】上述したような衛星システムでは、あるテ
レビ番組を選択するために必要な情報は各受信装置に固
定的にプログラムされているのではなく、むしろ、衛星
から絶えず各トランスポンダ上にダウンロードされる。
テレビ番組選択情報は、マスタ番組案内(Master Progra
m Guide - ＭＰＧ）と呼ばれているデータの集まりから
構成されており、この番組案内はユーザに表示されるテ
レビ番組タイトル、その開始時間と終了時間、バーチャ
ル・チャネル番号、およびバーチャル・チャネルの割当
て情報を、トランスポンダ周波数と、特定のトランスポ
ンダから送信された時分割多重化データストリーム内の
位置とに関係づけている。このようなシステムでは、最
初のマスタ番組案内が衛星から受信されるまではどのチ
ャネルもチューニング（同調）することが不可能であ
る。その理由は、その番組案内を受信するまでは、いず
れのトランスポンダの周波数とデータストリーム内の位
置（つまり、データ・タイム・スロット）の点から見た
ときに、どのチャネルも、それがどこに置かれているか
が受信装置（ＩＲＤ、つまり、統合受信デコーダ(Integ
rated Receiver Decoder) ）には文字通り分からないた
めである。
【００１７】マスタ番組案内は、テレビ番組の映像およ
び音声データと一緒にすべてのトランスポンダで送信さ
れ、例えば、２秒ごとに周期的に繰り返されることが好
ましい。マスタ番組案内はいったん受信されると、受信
装置のメモリ・ユニットに保存され、例えば、３０分ご
とに周期的に更新される。マスタ番組案内を保存してお
くと、必要な選択データがいつでも利用できるので、テ
レビ番組を瞬時に選択することが可能になる。マスタ番
組案内がテレビ番組を選択するために使用されたあと
で、破棄されるようなことがあると、新しい番組案内を
得るまでに少なくとも２秒の遅延が生じ、そのあとでさ
らに別のテレビ番組の選択が行われることになる。
【００１８】望みのテレビ番組を搬送するチャネル・ト
ランスポンダにいったんチューニングされると、その番
組の音声情報と映像情報を収めているデータ・パケット
は、そのデータ・パケットを調べて適切なＳＣＩＤ（Se
rvice Component Identifier：サービス成分識別子）１
２ビット・コードを知ることにより、そのトランスポン
ダから受信したデータストリームから選択することがで
きる。現在受信されているデータ・パケットのＳＣＩＤ
が、番組案内にリストされている望みのテレビ番組のＳ
ＣＩＤに一致すれば、そのデータ・パケットは受信装置
の適切なデータ処理セクションに転送される。特定パケ
ットのＳＣＩＤが番組案内にリストされている望みのテ
レビ番組のＳＣＩＤに一致していなければ、そのデータ
・パケットは破棄される。
【００１９】
【実施例】以下では、上述した本発明を実現するのに適
したシステム・ハードウェアについて簡単に説明する。
図４に示すように、送信装置４００Ｔは信号源（ソー
ス）４０１（例えばテレビジョン信号源）からのデータ
信号を処理し、その処理した信号を衛星４００Ｓに送信
する。衛星４００Ｓはこの信号を受信すると、受信アン
テナ４００Ａに再放送し、受信アンテナから信号が受信
機４００Ｒに入力される。送信装置４００Ｔはエンコー
ダ４１０Ｔ、変調器（つまり、変調器／順方向誤り訂正
器（ＦＥＣ））４２０Ｔ、およびアップリンク・ユニッ
ト４３０Ｔを具備している。エンコーダ４１０Ｔは信号
源４０１からの信号を、ＭＰＥＧのような、所定の規格
（標準）に従って圧縮し、符号化する。ＭＰＥＧは、デ
ィジタル記憶媒体上に記憶される動画および関連オーデ
ィオの符号化表現に関して国際標準化機構(Internation
al Standards Organization - ＩＳＯ）の動画専門家部
会(Moving Picture Expert Group) によって開発された
国際規格である。エンコーダ４１０Ｔから出力の符号化
信号は変調器／順方向誤り訂正器（ＦＥＣ）４２０Ｔに
渡され、そこで、信号はエラー訂正データと一緒に符号
化され、この符号化信号は４相位相偏移変調(Quaternar
y Phase Shift Key - ＱＰＳＫ）で変調されて搬送波に
乗せられる。
【００２０】アップリンク・ユニット４３０Ｔはその圧
縮・符号化信号を衛星４００Ｓに送信し、その衛星から
信号は選択された地域の受信エリアに放送される。衛星
４００Ｓからの信号は、いわゆるセットトップ受信機４
００Ｒ（つまり、テレビジョン受信機の上に置かれたイ
ンタフェース装置）の入力に接続されたアンテナディッ
シュ（antenna dish：皿状アンテナ）４００Ａによって
受信される。受信機４００Ｒは、信号を復調し、エラー
訂正データを復号化する復調器（デモジュレータ／順方
向エラー訂正（ＦＥＣ）デコーダ）４１０Ｒと、ＩＲ
（赤外線）リモート・コントロール・コマンドを受信す
るＩＲ受信装置４１２と、復調器／ＦＥＣユニット４１
０Ｒと相互作用しながら動作するマイクロプロセッサ４
１５Ｒと、信号の内容、つまり、オーディオ情報である
か、ビデオ情報であるかに応じてユニット４００Ｒ内の
該当のデコーダ４２０Ｒへ信号を転送するトランスポー
ト・ユニット４２０Ｒとを装備している。ＮＴＳＣエン
コーダ４４０Ｒは復号化信号を、標準ＮＴＳＣ民生ＶＣ
Ｒ（ビデオカセットレコーダ）４０２および標準ＮＴＳ
Ｃ民生テレビジョン受信機４０３の信号処理回路で使用
するのに適したフォーマットに符号化する。マイクロプ
ロセッサ（またはマイクロコントローラやマイクロコン
ピュータ）４１５Ｒは赤外線 (ＩＲ) 制御信号をリモー
ト・コントロール・ユニット（遠隔制御器、リモコン）
４５０Ｒから受信し、制御情報をＩＲリンク（ＩＲ送信
装置）４１８Ｒを介してＶＣＲ４０２へ送信する。マイ
クロプロセッサ４１５Ｒは対話型文または確認文をユー
ザに対して表示するために必要な文字表示(on-screen d
isplay：ＯＳＤ）信号も生成する。また、マイクロプロ
セッサ４１５Ｒはカーソル・キーのＸ、Ｙ情報を受信
し、それを解読して文字表示内のユーザ選択部分をハイ
ライト（強調）で表示することを制御する。
【００２１】予測リストを自動生成するルーチンは図５
に開示されている。ステップ５００でルーチンに入り、
ステップ５２０で、図２の視聴アイテム・リスト内のサ
ーチ用語に一致するものを見つけるために、新たに受信
した番組案内のサーチが行われる。なお、図１の追加の
番組記述データ１２０もサーチされ、図２のサーチ用語
に対応するものが探し出されることも注意されたい。サ
ーチ・ルーチンはステップ５２５でループに入り、サー
チが無事に完了するまで続けられる。
【００２２】サーチが完了すると、ステップ５３０で、
視聴アイテム・リストはアイテム表示のための重み付け
がされる。次に、視聴者にとって関心（興味）があると

【００２３】図６〜図８は、ユーザが本発明の特徴を行
使できるようにするテレビ受信機の画面表示を示してい
る。具体的には、図６は、例えば、ＤＳＳ（登録商標）
衛星テレビジョン・システムの通常の階層型メニュー・
システムからアクセスされる予測エージェント・メイン
メニューである。図６の画面表示には、それぞれ"Reque
st a Suggestion （提案表示）" と"Edit User Informa
tion（編集ユーザ情報）" と名づけた２つの「ソフトキ
ー」がある。"Request a Suggestion"を選択すると、予
測オペレーションが実行され、図７の画面表示が提示さ
れる。
【００２４】図７はユーザに対しての予測を示してい
る。例えば、Fox チャネル上の映画Annie Hall（アニー
ホール）が、その特定の視聴者にとって興味があると予
測されるショーのリストを導く。視聴者はそのリスト上
のアイテムの１つをハイライトにして、そのショーにチ
ューニングすることも、それを録画することもできる。
【００２５】図６の画面表示から選択できるもう１つ
は、"Edit User Information（編集ユーザ情報）" であ
る。ここでは、視聴者が"Undesired Show （アンデザイ
アードショー）" と名づけられたショー（番組）を見て
いたと想定している（説明の便宜上）。さらに、視聴者
はそのショーが面白くなかったので、そのショーが将来
の予測に影響するのを望んでいないものと想定してい
る。"Edit User Information（編集ユーザ情報）" ソフ
トキーをその視聴者が選択すると、図８の画面が起動し
て表示される。この場合、視聴者は"Undesired Show
（アンデザイアードショー）" のエントリをハイライト
にし、"Delete Item（アイテム削除）" ソフトキーを押
すと、そのエントリを削除することができる。
【００２６】また、上述したように、視聴者は必要とす
るエントリをロックしておくと、そのロックしたエント
リのアイアイテムが低カウントであるか、あるいは最近
では見ていなかったときに、空きスペースが必要になっ
た時点で、そのエントリが自動的に削除されるのを防止
することができる。

【発明の効果】以上、衛星テレビジョン・システムを例
にして本発明を説明してきたが、本発明は、ディジタル
であるか、アナログであるかに関係なく、地上ベースの
テレビジョン放送システムにも等しく適用可能である。
【００２８】以上説明したように、本発明によれば、視
聴者が興味をもっている番組特性を有するテレビ番組を
チャネル案内リスト内から自動的に探し出して通知して
くれる効果が得られる。また、本発明によれば、視聴者
の番組の視聴結果に応じてサーチ基準を自動作成するこ
とができる。
【００２９】また、本発明では視聴者がサーチ基準を編
集することができる。

Claims (2)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 将来送信される番組の少なくとも番組タ
    イトル情報がチャネル案内リストの形態で前もって送信
    されるテレビジョンシステムにおいて、 前記チャネル案内リストを表すデータを記憶すると共
    に、ユーザが以前に見ていたテレビ番組の特性リストを
    表すデータを記憶しておくメモリ手段と、 ユーザの入力データを入力するデータ入力手段と、 前記チャネル案内リストのサーチを行って、前記ユーザ
    が以前に見ていたテレビ番組の前記特性を表している前
    記データに一致するものを探し出す制御手段と、 前記制御手段の制御の下で文書または図形を表示する画
    面表示手段とを備え、 前記制御手段の前記サーチが成功して完了したときに、
    該制御手段は、当該ユーザが以前に見ていたテレビ番組
    の前記特性リストの記入項目と類似の特性を共有する選
    択されたテレビ番組が利用可能なことを当該ユーザに知
    らせるように前記表示手段を制御することを特徴とする
    装置。
  2. 【請求項２】 将来送信される番組の少なくとも番組タ
    イトル情報がチャネル案内リストの形態で前もって送信
    されるテレビジョンシステムにおいて、 前記チャネル案内リストを表すデータと、ユーザが以前
    に見ていたテレビ番組の特性を表すデータとをメモリ手
    段に記憶するステップと、 前記チャネル案内リストのサーチを行って、前記ユーザ
    が以前に見ていたテレビ番組の前記特性を表している特
    定のデータに一致しているものを探し出すステップと、 前記サーチが成功して完了したときに、当該ユーザが以
    前に見ていたテレビ番組の特性と類似の特性をもつテレ
    ビ番組が利用可能であることを当該ユーザに通知するス
    テップとを含んでいることを特徴とする方法。
