(Prior Art) As an air cleaner for an internal combustion engine, etc.
As disclosed in Japanese Patent No. 4623, a honeycomb element housed in a casing is used. For example, the third
In the illustrated air cleaner 20, the honeycomb element 2 is constructed by using a filter material on the tube wall forming a large number of parallel passages, and alternately closing one end and the other end of each adjacent passage. Such a honeycomb element 2 has an oval or elliptical cross-sectional shape, that is, an end surface shape, and the casing 21 is flattened, which is advantageous in layout for mounting in an engine room of an automobile or the like. The inlet pipe 22 and the outlet pipe 23 of the casing 21
Is provided so as to face the center of the end surface of the element 2.

(Problems to be Solved by the Invention) In the conventional air cleaner 20 as described above, when the air enters from the inlet pipe 22, the expansion portion 2 is provided on the inflow side of the casing.
Even if No. 4 is provided, the air flow does not spread sufficiently, the air flow is concentrated in the central portion, and the air inflow is small in both corners d, and a uniform flow cannot be obtained. Therefore, the filtration area of the honeycomb element does not work uniformly, which in turn shortens the clogging life. This is because, due to the restriction on the total length of the air cleaner, the divergence angle of the expansion part cannot be made very gentle, and even if the pipe is thickened, the central flow velocity is large due to the flow velocity distribution in the pipe.

(Means for Solving the Problems) An air cleaner of the present invention uses the same honeycomb element as in the conventional case, and uses an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe of a casing that accommodates the same as those of the long axis of the end face of the honeycomb element having an oval or elliptical shape. It is provided at a position facing one end and the other end, respectively. An expanding portion and a contracting portion of the casing are formed between the inlet pipe and the outlet pipe and the element facing them, and the cross-sectional areas are sequentially enlarged toward the end faces of the elements.

(Operation) The air that has entered the one end face of the honeycomb element inlet side end face through the inlet pipe of the element of this invention, that is, the position facing the inlet pipe, leaves the end face on the outlet side of the honeycomb element at the position farthest from the outlet pipe. . Further, the air that enters from the inlet pipe, diffuses at the expanding portion, is deflected, and enters the honeycomb element at the other end of the long axis of the inlet-side end face, that is, at a position far from the inlet pipe, leaves the honeycomb element at a position facing the outlet pipe. Thus, the air entering from the inlet pipe has almost the same length of passage and the amount of deflection as a whole, regardless of where it enters from the end face of the honeycomb element, and at the expanded portion on the inlet side of the casing, the air is piped from the inlet pipe. The flow passage cross-sectional area gradually decreases as the passage inlet moves away, and the flow passage cross-sectional area gradually increases at the outlet side reduction portion as it approaches the outlet pipe. Therefore, the flow rate is almost evenly distributed to any position on the end face of the element, and the passage resistances of these flow paths are also substantially equal. In this way, the honeycomb element acts as an effective filtering area almost uniformly at any position of its cross section.

(Example) The air cleaner 1 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 comprises a honeycomb element 2 and a casing 3 for accommodating the honeycomb element 2. The honeycomb element 2 is similar to that shown in FIG. The casing 3 is composed of an inlet pipe 4, an inlet casing 6 having a widened portion 5, an outlet pipe 7 and an outlet casing 9 having a reduced portion 8, which are engaged by a clip 10. Reference numeral 11 is a seal packing. The inlet pipe 4 is formed so as to face a position a (upward in FIG. 1) near one end of the long axis C of the one end face of the honeycomb element 2, and the outlet pipe 7 is formed of the long axis of the other end face of the honeycomb element 2. It is provided so as to face the position b at the other end (downward in FIG. 1). The bent state of the path including the expanding portion 5 and the contracting portion 8 until the air flowing in from the inlet pipe 4 reaches the outlet pipe becomes substantially uniform, and the air flow diffuses in the expanding portion and the honeycomb element It flows into each position of the end face of the.
As a result, the honeycomb element is effectively used uniformly over the entire filtration area, and the amount of dust captured until the specific resistance value is reached increases. An example of the performance improvement is shown in FIG. A is a diagram of the present invention, and B is a diagram of the conventional product.
