PURPOSE:To discriminate a paper medium for its obverse/reverse with no influence by a position error when setting the paper medium, position displacement at the time of conveying the paper medium and a habitual condition of the paper medium itself by comparing intensity and passing time of light, permeating through a black line part of the paper medium, respectively with the reference voltage and time. CONSTITUTION:A light emitting element 4 irradiates a paper medium 1 with light. A light receiving element 3 receives light from the light emitting element 4, permeating through the paper medium 1. Further in the first comparator amplifier 6, an output signal of the light receiving element 3 and reference voltage are input and compared. In the second comparator amplifier 8, an output signal of the comparator amplifier 6 and reference time are input and compared. As a result, the paper medium can be discriminated for its obverse/reverse without being influenced by a position error when setting the paper medium, position displacement at the time of conveying the paper medium and a habitual condition of the paper medium itself.
