Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the reliability when a block is replaced with another one that has a margin of the rewriting frequency and to shorten the replacement processing time by providing two or more replacement destination address pointers in a replacement processing state. CONSTITUTION:A device control part 61 contains a verifier means which verifies the reliability of the recorded data, a replacement means which replaces the defective date recognized by the verifier means with another area, and 8 format means which initializes a control area where a medium is controlled. Furthermore the part 61 includes two or more replacement destination address pointers A and B. In such 8 constitution, the replacement processing is carried out with use of both pointers A and B. Thus it is possible to improve the reliability with replacement of a block with another one that has a margin of the rewriting frequency and also to shorten the replacement processing time.

FIG. 5 shows a general replacement processing procedure of a conventional information recording / reproducing apparatus. The device control section 6 receives a command accompanied by an inspection after recording from the host computer, for example, a write-and-verify command, and starts a replacement process if a defective sector is detected during execution. When the replacement process is started, the device control unit 6 records the replacement block in the replacement block in step (32), verifies the replacement block in step (33), and inspects whether the recording was successful. If it is determined in step (34) that the recording was successful, the process ends normally. If it is determined in step (34) that the recording has not been normally performed, the number of trials is checked in step (35). If the number of trials has not exceeded N, the replacement destination address pointer is updated (for example, 1 is added) in step (36), and the process proceeds to step (32). Step (3
If it is determined in 5) that the number of trials has exceeded N, the process proceeds to step (38) and ends in error. Next, FIG. 6 shows the movement of the pointer of the replacement address before and after the reformatting process of the conventional information recording / reproducing apparatus. In FIG. 5, there is one replacement address pointer, and when reformatting is performed, it is returned to the initial position and the processing is completed.

However, in the above-mentioned conventional configuration, when the number of rewrites is limited, the block exceeding the number of rewrites is replaced with another block by the replacement process. However, after the reformatting, if the replacement destination address pointer is initialized, there is a possibility that the block may be replaced with a block that is close to or over the limit of the number of rewrites. In this case, the replacement address pointer is updated several times and retries are performed one after another, but there is a possibility that a block that has not reached the limit of the number of rewrites within the number of retries cannot be reached, and the time for the replacement process is also increased. It costs.

FIG. 2 shows a replacement processing procedure of the information recording / reproducing apparatus of the present invention. The device control unit 61 receives a command accompanied by an inspection after recording, for example, a write-and-verify command from the host computer, and starts a replacement process if a defective sector is detected during execution. Device control unit 6
When 1 starts the replacement process, the data is recorded in the block indicated by the replacement address pointer A in step (12), the replacement block is verified in step (13), and it is checked whether or not the recording was successful. If it is determined in step (14) that the recording was successful, the process ends normally. If it is determined in step (14) that the recording has not been performed normally, in step (15) the number of trials is checked. Number of trials is M
If it does not exceed the number of times, the replacement destination address pointer A is updated (for example, 1 is added) at step (16), and then step (1
Proceed to 2). When it is determined in step (15) that the number of trials has exceeded M times, the process proceeds to step (17), in which the record is made in the block indicated by the replacement destination address pointer B in step (17), and the replacement destination block is recorded in step (18). Verify and check if the recording was successful. If it is determined in step (19) that the recording was successful, the process ends normally. If it is determined in step (19) that the recording has not been normally performed, the number of trials is checked in step (20). If the number of trials does not exceed M, step (2
In 1), the replacement address pointer A is updated (for example, 1 is added), and the process proceeds to step (17). Step (20)
Then, if it is judged that the number of trials exceeds M times, the step (2
Proceed to 3) and end with an error. Next, FIG. 3 shows the movement of the pointer of the replacement address before and after the reformatting process of the information recording / reproducing apparatus of the present invention. In FIG. 3, there are two replacement destination address pointers A and B, and when reformatting is performed, the replacement destination address pointer A is returned to the initial position, but the replacement destination address pointer B retains its value and ends.
