Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a high capacity battery which can charge/discharge a high current by employing a parallel circuit of a high capacity battery which can not charge/discharge a high current and a low capacity battery or a capacitor which can charge/discharge a high current. CONSTITUTION:A high capacity battery 1 which can not charge/discharge a high current, e.g. a nickel/hydrogen battery, is connected in parallel with a low capacity battery 2 which can change/discharge a high current, e.g. a nickel/ cadmium battery. When a switch 4 is turned ON, power is fed from the batteries 1, 2 in case of a light load whereas power is fed mainly from the battery 2 through high current discharge in case of a heavy load. When the switch 4 is turned OFF, the battery 2 is charged by the batter 1. The operation is repeated. The batteries 1, 2 function as a high current, high capacity battery when it is viewed from the load 3 side.

[Detailed Description of the Invention] [Field of Application of the Invention] [Background of the Invention] Conventionally, cordless tools and the like have used batteries capable of charging and discharging large currents, such as nickel-cadmium batteries.
There was a problem that the actual usage time was short due to the small capacity. On the other hand, there are nickel-metal hydride batteries that have a large capacity, but they cannot be used in cordless tools and the like because they cannot be charged and discharged with large currents. Note that there is a battery that uses the principle of an electric double layer capacitor as a battery capable of charging and discharging large currents, but its capacity is even smaller than that of a nickel-cadmium battery. Additionally, capacitors are capable of charging and discharging large currents, but these also have small capacities.

[Summary of the Invention] The present invention enables high current charging by connecting in parallel a battery that cannot be charged and discharged with a large current but has a large capacity, and a battery or capacitor that can be charged and discharged with a large current but has a small capacity. The reason is that it can be used as a battery that can be discharged and has a large capacity.

[Embodiment of the Invention] FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of the present invention. In the figure, 1 is a battery like a nickel-metal hydride battery that cannot be charged or discharged at a large current but has a large capacity, and 2 is a nickel-cadmium battery or a battery that uses the principle of an electric double layer capacitor.
This battery is capable of charging and discharging large currents, but has a small capacity. In addition, nickel-hydrogen batteries and nickel-cadmium batteries are 1.
2V/cell. 3 is a load consisting of cordless tools and the like. 4 is a switch.

Cordless tools include drills for making holes, drivers for tightening screws, and impact wrenches. These cordless tools work repeatedly for short periods of time and then stop for short periods of time. Therefore, when the switch 4 is turned on, power is supplied from batteries 1 and 2 during light loads, and power is supplied mainly by large current discharge from battery 2 during heavy loads. On the other hand, when the switch 4 is off, the operation of charging the battery 1 to the battery 2 is repeated. From the perspective of the load 3, the battery 1.2 is a large current/high capacity battery.

FIG. 3 shows another embodiment of the invention. In the figure, 5 is a resistor for current limiting, and batteries 1.2 and 1.2 have low internal resistance.
If there are variations in battery voltage, a large current flows to balance the voltage, so this is suppressed.
