記録媒体への損傷防止のため成形後、ラツピング
テープ等にて鏡面に近い粗さに仕上げてある。第
2図は第1図の磁気ヘツドのギヤツプ部断面図を
示す。第2図において、磁気ヘツド1の溝2の間
隔aは通常の1/2インチ磁気テープ用ヘツドの場
合、磁気記録媒体3である磁気テープの幅12.65
±0.05mmに対し約12.5mmである。一般的に両端の
溝がない場合の磁気ヘツド表面の摩耗形状断面は
第3図の如くであり、テープの両端に近い部分で
はチープタツチが不安定となるため、第1図に示
す溝2を設けることが多い。しかしながら従来は
この溝の深さは、前述の摩耗後のチツプタツチ不
安定に対する防止対策として設けられたものであ
り、特に規定されたものでなく、0.3〜0.5mmの深
さであつた。本考案ではこの深さに着目し、磁気
ヘツドの摩耗形状を多数個調査し、第3図の中央
部摩耗量b、両端部摩耗量cの値より(c−b)
が25μm程度であることより、溝2の深さを磁気
ヘツドの許容摩耗量プラス25μmに設定した。こ
の深さにすることにより、磁気ヘツドは磁気ヘツ
ド表面の摩耗量が両端の溝深さと同じになつた場
合に磁気ヘツドの寿命とするものであり、その交
換時期が明確となつた。
