Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable recording with high accuracy and to secure the compatibility of a recording tape by detecting the height of a rotary magnetic head, comparing the height with a reference value and controlling an electric/mechanical converting element so that the head height can be same. CONSTITUTION:When a rotary magnetic head 18 is rotated just above a head height detecting means 22 by utilizing a rotary phase signal, light 23 is projected and received and the head height is detected. The detected value is compared with the reference value, which is recorded to a memory, in a subtracting circuit and based on a compared result, a voltage is generated by a positioning voltage generating circuit and impressed to an electric/mechanical converting element 19. Accordingly, the rotary magnetic head 18 can be displaced corresponding to the polarity and size of the voltage and the head height can be controlled to be same with the high accuracy. Thus, the head for reproducing can be used even at the time of recording as well, the recording accuracy is improved and the compatibility of the recording tape is guaranteed.
