Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare a thermoplastic resin compsn. having a remarkably high impact strength as well as a satisfactory appearance and heat resistance by compounding a compsn. comprising a polycarbonate resin and a satd. polyester resin with an acrylic resin. CONSTITUTION:100 pts.wt. compsn. comprising 10-90wt.% polycarbonate resin and 90-10wt.% satd. polyester resin is compounded with 5-40 pts.wt. acrylic resin. The polycarbonate resin, through excellent in the resistance to heat and impact, is poor in the moldability, plating properties, and chemical resistance, while the polyester resin, through excellent in the dimensional stability and resistance to weathering and chemicals, does not have a sufficient impact and heat resistance. The compsn. comprising only these two resins exhibits a poor appearance, foams or discolors in an extreme case, and offers an insufficient impact strength. Addition of the acrylic resin to the compsn. gives a compsn. with a remarkably high impact strength as well as a sufficient heat resistance and improved appearance.

Therefore, attempts have been made to create resins with excellent heat resistance, impact resistance, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability by adding polycarbonate resins to saturated polyester resins, but polycarbonate resins are simply Merely mixing saturated polyester resin with saturated polyester resin will result in poor appearance characteristics and, in extreme cases, foaming and coloring.
Moreover, only insufficient impact resistance has been obtained.
