As shown in FIG. 7, a filter element used in an air cleaner for an internal combustion engine, etc., is made by laminating a large number of corrugated plates 1 and flat plates 2, each having peaks 1a and troughs 1b, alternately. The trough portions 1b of the plate material 1 and the peak portions 1a of the corrugated sheet material 1 on the other side are filled and sealed with an adhesive or the like. A large number of channel chambers 3 are formed between one side and the other side, with one end open and the other end closed.

The so-called honeycomb type filter element with the above structure has the advantage of having a larger overarea and longer life than the so-called pleated type filter element made of chrysanthemum-shaped folded origami paper. Valley part 1 of corrugated sheet material 1
Since b is filled, the inflow cross-sectional area is small in comparison to the large overflow area, which has disadvantages such as high flow resistance, early clogging of the inflow surface, and insufficient utilization of the internal overflow surface.

That is, the sheet-like filter paper 20 has pleats 21 extending vertically at predetermined intervals. Every other fold 21 has a chevron-shaped fold 23 on the filter paper 20.
It is continuously provided on the lower end 24 side of. In addition, the fold 21 of the fold next to the fold 21 of the fold with this chevron-shaped fold 23 has an inverse chevron-shaped fold 2
3a is continuously provided on the upper end 25 side of the filter paper 20. On the upper end 25 side and the lower end 24 side of the surface of the sheet-like filter paper 20, there are adhesive layers 26, 2 of a predetermined width.
6 is formed.

At the upper and lower ends, end walls 8a, 40, 18 corresponding to the chevron-shaped fold 23 and the reverse chevron-shaped fold 23a are provided.
b, 41 is formed. The end walls 18a, 18b and the end walls 40a, 40b are formed alternately at the upper and lower ends of the pleats 35. When the adjacent pleat pieces b and c at the upper end of the pleat 35 are brought into contact with each other and the pleat pieces a and b at the lower end are brought into contact with each other, the adhesive layer 17 joins and seals these respective pleat pieces. Each pleat piece at the upper and lower ends will be joined and sealed alternately.

The filter element of the present invention does not have the filling seal portions of peaks and valleys like the conventional ones, so the cross-sectional area of the inlet and outlet at the inlet and outlet surfaces is larger than that of the conventional one (approximately 50
% increase), which avoids early clogging at the inflow surface and increased distribution resistance. In addition, since there is no flat plate material between the corrugated plates as in the conventional case, the over-chamber space formed between each fold becomes large, allowing air to flow over the entire surface of the material, thereby improving the service life. Furthermore, if the performance is the same as before,
It can be made more compact.
