The present invention relates to a new heat-sensitive recording unit to which coloring is applied by a novel redox reaction. The thermal recording method uses physical or chemical changes in substances caused by thermal energy to record images.
A large number of methods have been proposed. Among these thermal recording methods, the so-called dye-coloring type thermal recording method proposed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 45-14039, etc. and the thermal recording paper using it are free from problems such as noise and odor, and are capable of high-speed recording. In order to make this possible, along with improvements in thermal printer technology centered on the development of thermal heads using resistor elements, they have come to be widely used in output terminal devices such as computer terminals and facsimile machines, and both will continue to grow in the future. is expected. These dye-colored thermal recording papers generally contain (A) a lactone dye, such as 3,3-bis(4'-
dimethylaminophenyl)-6-dimethylaminophthalide (crystal violet lactone) and (B) acidic substances such as 2,2-bis-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-propane (bisphenol A). A phenolic compound and a phenolic compound are held together on a support using a binder or the like, and the two come into contact with each other by being melted by heat, thereby forming a colored image of the acid type of each lactone dye on the support. However, for thermal recording paper that uses color development through contact between these lactone dyes and acidic phenolic compounds, (1) In order to obtain a colored image with sufficient density, the dye and developer must be placed on the support. Therefore, it requires a lot of energy to bring these dyes and color developers into melt contact, making it difficult to meet the increasing demands for high-speed data communications (facsimile) in recent years. difficult to do. (2) The colored image obtained by the reaction between the dye and the color developer through thermal melting is extremely unstable, and is easily discolored and faded by light, making it impossible to distinguish. Another problem is that the colored image easily disappears due to contact with oil. These problems strongly require improvement in the thermal recording system, which is expected to become mainstream in facsimile, which has seen significant growth in recent years. In recent years, intensive studies have been made from the viewpoint of dyes, color developers, additives, and paint formulation for thermal recording paper, and despite various proposals, no definitive improvements have been made yet. That is the reality. As a result of intensive research into thermal recording paper and the various materials used therein, the inventors of the present invention have found that they are compatible with the conventional coloring system based on an acid-base reaction between a lactone dye and an acidic substance. We have discovered that the various problems of the dye-colored thermal recording paper can be solved by using a coloring system based on a redox reaction, which is a reaction between a methane dye and a quinone derivative, for thermal recording paper.
We have arrived at the present invention. That is, the present invention is basically a heat-sensitive recording unit characterized by holding a methane dye and a quinone derivative on a support. , an alkanolamine and/or a sequestering agent. The thermal recording unit of the present invention is characterized by the ability to develop color images based on the equilibrium reaction between conventional acids (acidic color developers typified by bisphenols) and bases (lactone dyes typified by CVL). On the contrary, by applying an oxidation-reduction reaction that is thought to proceed essentially irreversibly, an acidic color developer + basic dye color image, an oxidizing organic color developer + methane dye → color image can be formed on the support. The colored image produced by heating contact is extremely stable against the environment. The methane dye used in the present invention has the general formula () (In the formula, X, Y, and Z each represent a phenyl group, a naphthyl group, a β-styryl group, or an aromatic heterocyclic ring residue that may have a substituent, and may be the same or different. Often, two of these may be combined to form a ring.Also, when there is one or less aromatic heterocyclic residue among X, Y and Z, phenyl group, naphthyl group or β
- A group of compounds represented by a styryl group having at least one amino group, substituted amino group, or lower alkoxy group in the para position to the central methine group of the molecule, and as an aromatic heterocyclic residue.

Furthermore, the quinone derivative used in the present invention is one that melts and contacts a methane dye on a support by heating, oxidizes the methane dye, and gives an oxidized color image of the corresponding dye on the support. However, preferred compounds include water-insoluble quinone derivatives having oxidizing ability, and more preferred are water-insoluble quinone derivatives substituted with an electron-withdrawing group. Quinone derivatives substituted with electron-withdrawing groups, particularly quinone derivatives with polysubstituted electron-withdrawing properties, are compounds with high redox potential and are the most preferred group of compounds. Since these quinone derivatives need to be stably present on the heat-sensitive recording paper, low molecular weight compounds and compounds with sublimation properties are not preferred. Oxidizing quinone derivatives (electron acceptors) such as 1,4-naphthoquinone are used. The present invention is not limited to these exemplified compounds. However, even if it is a quinone derivative substituted with a highly oxidizing electron-withdrawing group, the following compounds with a small molecular weight and sublimation property, such as 2,3,5,6-tetrachlor-1,4 -benzoquinone (chloranil), 2,3,5,6-
Tetrafluor-1,4-benzoquinone (floranil), 2,3,5-trichlor-1,4-benzoquinone, dichloro-benzoquinone, difluor-
Benzoquinones and other substances (1) gradually sublimate from the thermal recording paper surface during storage, resulting in a decline in the coloring performance of the thermal recording paper; (2) the sublimated quinone derivatives react with methane dyes, causing the thermal recording paper surface to deteriorate. (3) It may have an adverse effect on the working environment, so it is impossible to obtain a practical thermosensitive recording paper as it is, and means to suppress sublimation will be required for practical use. The methane dye represented by the general formula ( step), the step of preparing an aqueous coating liquid with a color developer, etc.
Alternatively, the aqueous suspension, aqueous coating liquid, or the coated surface of the thermal recording paper is significantly colored at the stage of the thermal recording paper coated with the aqueous coating liquid on the support, respectively;
Furthermore, many coated thermal recording papers tend to become colored during storage or exposure to light, so they may lack practical use as thermal recording paper as is. Therefore, by using (A) an alkanolamine and/or (B) a sequestering agent along with the basically essential methane dye and quinone derivative, the methane dye is stabilized on the thermosensitive recording paper. These alkanolamines and/or sequestering agents may be used during the preparation of dye dispersions, dispersions of dyes and color developers (quinone derivatives), or dispersions containing other substances, or in aqueous coating solutions for thermal recording paper. Added during creation. In the heat-sensitive recording unit containing a methane dye and a quinone derivative of the present invention, the alkanolamine and sequestering agent used are the following compounds. (A) Alkanolamine: General formula () (In the formula, R represents a lower alkylene group, an alkylene group substituted with a hydroxyl group, or a polyoxyalkylene group, and R' and R'' are a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl group, an allyl group, an aralkyl group, respectively) group, acyl group, ω-hydroxyalkylpolyoxyalkylene group, and when the terminal is a hydroxy group, a lower alkyl ether may be formed, and R′ and R″ may combine to form a ring. aminomethyl-2-hydroxyethyl)amine, N-(2-hydroxy-3amino-propyl)amine, and the like. These alkanolamines exist stably on the support as stabilizers for methane dyes, and it is necessary to maintain the stabilizing effect over a long period of time.
It is desirable that the compound has a temperature of ℃ or higher. Furthermore, among the alkanolamines mentioned above, 1
Compounds having a primary amino group or a secondary amino group tend to inhibit color development;
Preference is given to using alkanolamines having primary amino groups. (B) Metal ion sequestering agent A system for dispersing dyes, which combines with polyvalent metal ions present in the dye layer of a heat-sensitive recording support to form a stable chelate compound and This has the effect of suppressing the unfavorable coloring tendency of methine dyes. Sequestering agents with such effects include ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, N-hydroxyethyl-ethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid, triethylenetetraminepentaacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, N- Hydroxyethyl-iminodiacetic acid, diethanolglycine, ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic acid, glycol ether diamine tetraacetic acid, 1,3-diaminopropan-2-oltetraacetic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, gluconic acid, sugar acids and the like organic water-soluble sequestrants, such as alkali metal salts, polyacrylates, metal salts of lignosulfonic acid,
Compatible with dye solvents such as Schiff bases such as N,N'-disalicylidene ethylenediamine, 1,3-diketones such as trifluoroacetylacetone, thenoyl trifluoroacetone, and pivaloyl trifluoroacetone, and higher amide derivatives of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Examples include organic metal ion sequestering agents, polymerized phosphates such as sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium polymethanoate, sodium pyrophosphate, and sodium dihydrogen pyronate. The amount of alkanolamine and sequestering agent used is 1 to 10,000 parts by weight of alkanolamine per 100 parts by weight of methane dye, and the amount of sequestering agent is 1 to 10,000 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of methane dye.
It is 0.1 to 1000 parts by weight. The thermal recording unit of the present invention is generally prepared using a methane dye and an oxidizing organic compound in the same manner as conventional dye-colored thermal recording paper. That is, a coating liquid in the form of a fine particle suspension is applied onto a support such as paper and dried to obtain heat-sensitive recording paper. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, when an alkanolamine and/or a sequestering agent is contained together with a methane dye and an oxidizing organic compound, these alkanolamines and/or sequestering agents are added to the dye and/or color developer. Water-based paints for heat-sensitive recording paper that may be added in advance when forming a fine particle suspension (a coating containing a pigment fine particle suspension, a color developer fine particle suspension, and various additives to adjust the paper surface characteristics, color development characteristics, etc.) It may be added at the preparation stage of the liquid (working solution), or a separately prepared solution containing an alkanol or/and sequestering agent may be applied before or after applying a water-based paint that does not contain these. . The thermal recording paper as a novel thermal recording unit of the present invention is manufactured by the following method. First, a quinone derivative and a methane dye are separately mixed or ground together with a dispersant or binder in a medium that does not dissolve them (for example, water) to prepare a dispersion. Binders with dispersion ability used to prepare these dispersions include polyvinyl alcohol,
Carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, styrene maleic acid copolymer or salt, diisobutylene maleic acid copolymer or salt, sodium alginate, modified starches, casein, gelatin, gum arabic,
Synthetic polymers such as, natural or modified natural polymers, etc. can be mentioned. In a preferred embodiment, the alkanolamines and/or the sequestering agent used are added to the methane dye dispersion during or after the production of the methane dye dispersion. A heat-sensitive recording unit can be obtained by mixing these color developer dispersions and dye dispersions and applying the mixture to a support such as paper. However, in order to achieve various physical properties for heat-sensitive recording, kaolin, talc, etc. may be added as necessary. Various known inorganic or organic pigments such as titanium oxide, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide, aluminum hydroxide, silica, diatomaceous earth, urea formaldehyde resin, polystyrene microbeads, stearic acid amide, ethylene bisstearamide, palmitic acid amide, etc. Melting point depressants (coloring sensitivity regulators), animal-based waxes such as beeswax and Seratz wax, vegetable-based waxes such as carnauba wax, synthetic waxes such as petroleum waxes, microcrystalline waxes, and polyethylene waxes, calcium suarate, zinc stearate, etc. lubricants such as metal soaps (higher fatty acid metal salts), pressure coloring inhibitors, various binders, surfactants, antifoaming agents, etc. are used in combination as appropriate to improve coating suitability and properties of heat-sensitive recording paper. Can be done. The heat-sensitive recording unit using the novel color-forming method obtained in this way is superior to the conventional dye-coloring type heat-sensitive recording paper that uses a color reaction between a phthalide dye or a fluoran dye and a phenolic compound. It has the following characteristics. 1) The amounts of dye and color developer used on the support are significantly reduced, and there is no need to use a large excess of color developer. 2) It saves energy because the energy required for color development is significantly reduced, and it can also handle higher speed thermal recording methods, making it compatible with high-speed facsimile methods. 3) The colored image has excellent storage stability and does not disappear quickly even when it comes into contact with organic solvents and does not disappear even when it comes into contact with water. 4) The colored image has excellent light fastness. Hereinafter, the present invention will be specifically explained with reference to Examples.
