Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently treat paper while recovering methane gas by suspending paper waste in water and allowing cellulose to act on the paper waste to decompose cellulose of paper into cellobiose and subsequently digesting cellobiose anaerobically. CONSTITUTION:Paper waste is charged to water at first to adjust the concn. of a solid to several % and stirred to beaten paper to prepare a suspension. Subsequently, cellulose is added to the suspension and then held the suspension to proper temp. for the action of this enzyme, and a main part of cellulose of paper is hydrolyzed to cellobiose which is, in turn, further digested anaerobically. The suspension becoming an almost liquid state by cellulose treatment is subjected to anaerobic digestion treatment as it is or after mixed with an inorg. nutrition source for anaerobic bacteria, excessive sludge or other org. waste.

In recent years, the amount of paper waste generated in office buildings and the like has increased significantly, and its disposal has become a problem. Conventionally, paper waste has been used or disposed of in the following ways: ■ Produce recycled paper using recycled paper manufacturing equipment: ■ Incinerate it at a garbage incinerator1 ■ Transport it to a garbage landfill and bury it; However, recycled paper wo-a+-j-

Some research has shown that % of paper is made of materials other than paper, and most of it is not suitable for recycling as paper. In addition, disposal by incineration or landfilling has problems such as increased transportation costs, air pollution, and lack of landfill space, and cannot cope with the increasing amount of waste.

Anaerobic digestion (so-called methane fermentation), which is a common method for treating organic wastewater such as factory wastewater, livestock wastewater, and urban sewage, cannot decompose the cellulose that makes up paper, so it is difficult to treat paper waste. It has not been adopted as a method.

The paper waste treatment method of the present invention, which has succeeded in achieving the above object, involves suspending paper waste in water, allowing cellulase to act on the paper to decompose the cellulose in the paper into cellobiose, and then subjecting it to anaerobic digestion. This is a characteristic feature.

Paper waste is first put into water, the solid content is reduced to several percent, and the paper is crushed by stirring and made into a slurry. Thereafter, cellulase is added to the suspension and maintained at a suitable temperature for the action of the enzyme, hydrolyzing most of the cellulose in the paper to cellobiose.

The suspension, which has become almost liquid due to cellulase treatment,
It is subjected to anaerobic digestion treatment either as it is or mixed with inorganic nutrients for anaerobic microorganisms, surplus sludge, and other organic wastes. The anaerobic digestion treatment can be carried out in the same manner as that carried out in urban sewage treatment plants, etc., and special equipment, conditions, etc. are not required. Anaerobic digestion breaks down cellobiose into a gas consisting primarily of methane.

Experimental results as shown in Table 1 Table 1 [Effects of the Invention] As mentioned above, the treatment method of the present invention treats paper waste with cellulase and then anaerobically digests it, so it can be used regardless of the paper quality. Furthermore, it is possible to efficiently process paper while recovering methane gas, which is useful as fuel, without causing environmental pollution as would be the case with incineration or disposal.
