Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid styrene oligomer suitable as a lubricating oil, low in aniline point, higher in density than water, thus effective as waterstop oil, etc., by polymerizing styrene in the presence of an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid or an aromatic sulfonic acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective liquid styrene oligomer 150-300 in number-average molecular weight can be obtained by polymerization of styrene at ca.80-120 (pref. 90-110) deg.C for ca.1-5 (pref. 1.5-3)hr in the presence of ca.1-4wt.% of a 60-95wt.% aqueous solution of phosphoric acid or an aromatic sulfonic acid (pref. p-toluenesulfonic acid). Furthermore preferably, after polymerization, addition of calcium hydroxide to effect neutralization followed by filtration will facilitate the separation of the oligomer.

In Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 55-57.524, styrene etc.
It is described that a polycyclic aromatic compound useful as a lubricating oil or the like is produced by quantification and then reacting the dimerized product with an aromatic hydrocarbon. The dimerization reaction is carried out using a fluorine-substituted aliphatic sulfonic acid, and more than 90% of the product is a styrene dimer.

The catalyst used for polymerization in the present invention is phosphoric acid or aromatic sulfonic acid, and the aromatic sulfonic acid is preferably para-toluenesulfonic acid. These catalysts must be used in the form of an aqueous solution of 60 to 90% by weight; liquid styrene oligomers cannot be obtained at concentrations other than this. The amount of the aqueous catalyst solution used is approximately 1 to 4% by weight based on styrene.

After the polymerization reaction is completed, it is neutralized and washed to obtain a liquid oligomer. If neutralization is carried out using slaked lime, it will react with the catalyst to form an insoluble salt, which will be easily separated. Note that, if necessary, this oligomer may be purified by distillation or the like, or its molecular weight may be made uniform, but this is not advantageous because of its high boiling point.

.. 01 to 1.03, and has other characteristics as shown in Examples. In particular, since it has a density of 1 or more, it is expected to be used as a water stop oil, and because of its low aniline point, it can be used as a base oil for refrigeration oil, emulsion oil, etc.
It is expected to be used as a compatibilizer with lubricating oils such as polyalphaolefin oils. The lubricating oil of the present invention includes:
If necessary, additives or other lubricating oils may be mixed to form a lubricating oil.
