Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent splashing at the time of high-speed rotation and to attain long-term wear resistance by constituting the lubricating agent of the medium of two perfluoropolyethers, one of which has a hydroxyl group at the terminal group and the other does not have functional groups. CONSTITUTION:The layer of the lubricating agent on the medium surface of the magnetic disk is constituted of a mixture composed of the two perfluoropolyethers; the 1st perfluoropolyether expressed by, for example, the chemical formula HO-CF2-(O-C2F4)p-(O-CF2)q-OCF2-CH2OH and the perfluoropolyether expressed by, for example, the chemical formula F-CF2-(O-C2 F4)p-(O-CF2)q-OCF2-OCF3 having no functional groups. The mixture is applied on the medium surface by spin coating in such a manner that the film thickness attains 50Angstrom . As a result, the hydroxyl group and the medium surface are securely bonded and the splashing of the lubricating agent at the time of high-speed rotation is prevented.

To prevent this, it is necessary to form a thin film of lubricant on the magnetic layer. Conventionally, a polymeric fluorine compound such as perfluoropolyether is used as this lubricant, and is applied to the surface of the medium by a spray method, a spin code method, a dipping method, or the like.

Perfluoropolyether is a lubricant used in the conventional media mentioned above, such as FOMBLIN Z (commercially available from Montefluos, Italy), which is expressed by the chemical formula % and has an average molecular weight of 8000 to +5000. Although it has a high molecular weight, it has a kinematic viscosity (150 to 2

However, although media using this lubricant have very good wear resistance immediately after the lubricant is applied, the media rotates at high speed (-360

Due to centrifugal force, it moves toward the outer circumference of the medium, and eventually scatters from the outermost edge.

Therefore, in conventional media, the thickness of the lubricating film on the surface of the medium gradually decreases over time under high-speed rotation, and the wear resistance of the medium deteriorates accordingly.

FIGS. 1 and 2 show comparison results between the first and second embodiments and the conventional example. In the conventional example used in this comparison, the above-mentioned FOMBLIN Z, which is a perfluoropolyether without functional groups, was used as a lubricant alone, and this was applied to a film thickness of 50 using the spin code method. This is a coated magnetic disk medium with a diameter of 5.25''.

As shown in FIG. 1, in the first and second embodiments, the number of C8S after a long time with high-speed rotation of the medium is not much different from the initial value, and compared to the conventional example, the wear resistance after a long time has increased. It can be seen that the wear resistance is very good. This is because the lubricant of the medium of the example contains perfluoropolyether having a hydroxyl group as a functional group, so the hydroxyl group and the surface of the medium are strongly bonded, and even when the medium rotates at high speed, the lubricant scatters. This is because it becomes smaller. This can be seen from the fact that the decrease in the lubricant film thickness due to the high-speed rotation time shown in FIG. 2 is smaller than in the conventional example.

The average molecular weight of FOMBLIN Z Dot used as perfluoropolyether having a hydroxyl group is 20
00 to 4,000, which is lower than the average molecular weight of perfluoropolyethers that do not have functional groups (8,000 to !5,000), and the abrasion resistance of the single product is higher than that of perfluoropolyethers that do not have functional groups. Inferior. Therefore, as the proportion of perfluoropolyether having hydroxyl groups in the lubricant increases, the initial wear resistance deteriorates, so the mixing ratio should not exceed 50 wt% of perfluoropolyether having hydroxyl groups. And there is no effect.

As explained above, according to the present invention, the lubricant for the medium is a mixture of perfluoropolyether having no functional group and perfluoropolyether having a hydroxyl group as a functional group. It is possible to prevent lubricant from scattering due to rotation, ensure the wear resistance of the medium over a long period of time, and obtain a highly reliable magnetic disk medium.
