Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 （産業上の利用分野） 本発明は一般にデジタルデータ処理システムの分野に関
し、より詳しくはデジタルデータ処理システムの１つ以
上のデータベース内に編成されたデータを管理、検索、
処理及び報告するためのシステムに関する。
（従来の技術） コンピュータは長年、科学的及び業務的用途で使われて
きた。科学的用途では、一般に比較的少量のデータに対
する計算集中的な演算を行うのに、コンピュータが使わ
れることが多い。他方業務的用途では、必要な演算が一
般に科学的用途よりはるかに少ないが、データの量は大
幅に大きいことが多い。
多量のデータを管理する用途の発展を促進するため、デ
ータベース管理システムが開発されてきた。データベー
ス管理システムは一般に、構造化データの記憶環境と、
１つ以上の照会（ｑｕｅｒｙ）またはその他のプログラ
ミング言語を与える。会計、在庫管理、財務などのアプ
リケーションプログラム、さらに一部の科学的アプリケ
ーションを開発しようとするアプリケーション開発者は
、データベース管理システムを使って、該当のアプリケ
ーションに係わるデータが論理的な配置で記憶される１
つ以上のデータベースを設定することができる。アプリ
ケーション開発者はデータベース管理システムによって
与えられる照会言語を用い、データベースからのデータ
の検索、データの処理、及び処理されたデータの報告へ
の編成を容易とするプログラムを発生させられる。
アプリケーションの設計に関連して、数多くの問題が生
じている。１つの問題は、データベースの設計、すなわ
ちデータベースの数、各データベースにどんな種類のデ
ータが記憶されるべきか、各データベース内でデータが
いかに編成されるべきか、と関連している。
第２の問題は、アプリケーションが発生すべき報告の種
類である。一般にアプリケーションは数種類の報告、す
なわちデータベースからの所定のグループ分はデータ間
の選ばれた関係を表す報告、を発生するように設計され
ている。システムの完成後、異なる種類の報告、すなわ
ちデータが異なる方法で与えられる報告が必要になった
ら、あるいは報告を発生するのにデータの異なるグルー
プ分けが使われるべきなら、そのような報告を生じるプ
ログラムが照会プログラムを用いて発展されねばならな
い。これはしばしば、各報告毎に多量の時間を必要とす
る。
一部のデータベース管理システムは、プログラムを発展
させて必要な報告を発生するための、簡略化照会言語を
提供している。簡略化照会言語のほとんどは、データが
データベース内でいかに編成されているか、さらに照会
言語について、ユーザが顕著な見識を持ち合わせている
ことを必要とする。“自然言語”式の照会言語も幾つか
開発されているが、これらは一般に照会言語に関して必
要な見識の量を減らし、データベース管理システムが照
会言語によって指定されている多数の操作コマンドの同
義語を認識できるようにしているに過ぎない、“自然言
語”式照会言語のユーザは依然、データベースの編成を
知ってなければならない。
（発明が解決しようとする課題） 本発明は、デジタルデータ処理システムの１つ以上のデ
ータベース内に編成されたデータの管理、検索、処理及
び報告を容易とする新規で改良されたシステムを提供す
る。
（課題を解決するための手段） 要約すれば、新規の本システムは１つ以上のデータベー
スと、ユーザによって使われる端末と、プロセッサとを
含む、各データベースがデータを記憶し、プロセッサか
らのデータ検索要求の受信に応じて記憶データを検索す
る。端末は、入力画面と出力画面を発生する。入力画面
はユーザに対して、ユーザが選んで該当のデータを識別
できるデータ選択基準識別子と、ユーザにとって所望な
データを処理する機能とを表示する。出力画面が処理デ
ータを表示する。プロセッサは、前記端末からの選ばれ
たデータ選択基準に応して、データベースによって処理
されるデータ検索要求を発生する。また検索データの受
信に応じて、プロセッサは選ばれた機能選択基準で要求
された検索データを処理し、処理されたデータを発生す
る。プロセッサはこの処理データを端末に送って、出力
画面上に表示させる。
改良態様では、処理データがデータの種類によって識別
され、前記プロセッサが例えば線グラフ、棒グラフ、そ
の他の表示の種類を、出力画面が表示を行う処理データ
のデータの種類に基づいて選択する。
尚、本発明は特許請求の範囲に的確に記述されている。
本発明の上記及びそれ以外の利点は、添付の図面に基づ
く以下の説明を参照することによって明瞭に理解される
であろう。
（実施例） 第１図は、本発明に従って構成されたシステムの機能ブ
ロック図を示す。第１図を参照すると、本システムは参
照番号１０で全体を表した複数のデータベースを含む。
各データベースは、複数の通常の編成凡例（パラダイム
）のうちの１つで編成し得る。１つの特定実施例におい
て、データベースｌＯは関係データベースとして編成さ
れ、各データベース１０は参照番号２０で全体を表した
１つ以上の関係を含む。各関係２０は複数のレコードか
らなり、さらに各レコードは複数の属性を有する。各デ
ータベース１０内の関係はデータベース管理装置２１に
よって管理され、関係と属性を識別する検索要求を受は
取ると、管理装置が属性と合致する関係からデータを検
索し、それを要求者へ通常の方法で供給する。
システムはさらに端末１１を含み、オペレータは端末１
１を通じ、処理すべきデータを含む関係の名前とデータ
を選択するための属性を与えることによって、データを
識別することができる。プリプロセッサ１２はまず端末
１１をエネーブルし、第２Ａ図に示すような４象限に分
割された人力表示を与える。
第２Ａ図を参照すれば、端末１１の画面左上に表示され
た構造（ＳＴＲＵＣＴＵＲＥ）象限３０は、各々データ
の種類を識別する複数のタイル３１Ａ〜３１Ｎ（全体を
参照番号３１で表す）を含む。例えば販売環境では、そ
れぞれのタイルが地理的位置、マーケット区分、製品ま
たは製品分野などを識別する。
機能（ＦＵＮＣＴＩＯＮ）象限３２は、データの処理で
通例ユーザが用いる機能を識別するようにグループ分け
された複数のタイル３３を含む。販売環境では、−機能
が例えば、各々別々のタイルと対応した保証発注、許容
百分率、割引百分率、及び受取額と関連し、各機能内の
タイルが数値またはその他のパラメータによってリンク
されている。会計環境では、機能象限３２で識別される
機能が、例えば受領高、総組利益及び純利益などの項目
を表すタイルを含んだ損益計算表を含み得る。機能象限
３２内の機能中の特定タイルを選ぶかまたは選ばないこ
とによって、ユーザは検索データの分析でシステムが項
目を無視するかあるいは使用するかを可能とする。
第２Ａ図に表された画面表示はさらに、右上に示された
測定（ＭＥＡＳＵＲＥＳ）象限３４を含む。測定象限３
４も、日付、範囲、値などのデータ検索制限あるいは選
択基準をユーザが選ぶのを可能とする複数のタイル３５
を含んでいる。さらに、画面表示は分析（ＡＮＡＬＹＳ
ＩＳ）象限３６も含み、この象限は選択されたデータが
分析及び表示されるべき基準をユーザが選ぶのを可能と
する複数のタイル３７を含んでいる。
データ検索を開始するには、ユーザが４つの象限３０．
３２．３４及び３６全てからタイルを選び、これらが全
体として１つのデータ検索要求を形成する。プリプロセ
ッサ１２が端末１１からのデータ要求を受は取り、その
内在データとカタログ１３内に存在する情報を用いて、
データベース１０のうち要求されたデータを含むものを
識別する。次いでプリプロセッサ１２は、検索要求をイ
ンタフェース１５を介し転送することによって、データ
ベース１０が要求データを検索し、それをプリプロセッ
サに送るのを可能とする。データを受は取ると、プリプ
ロセッサ１２は端末１１を通じてオペレータに知らせる
。またプリプロセッサ１２はインタフェース１５を介し
、キャッシュ１４が検索データをキャッシュするのも可
能とする。
要求データを受は取った後、プリプロセッサ１２は、機
能象限３２で選ばれた機能で定義された通り処理された
検索データを、第２Ｂ図に示した出力表示で端末１１を
通じてユーザに表示する。
第２Ｂ図を参照すると、左側の出力表示は出力領域４０
を含み、そこで端末１１が処理データをグラフ表示する
。表示右側の表示選択部４１は、各種の表示基準をユー
ザが選ぶのを可能とする複数のタイル４２を含む。例え
ば、処理データが出力領域４０で時間の関数として与え
られる場合、ユーザは時間の尺度または周期を選べる。
同じくユーザは、表示軸に沿った値の範囲、ソート基準
なども選べる。
プリプロセッサは、表示の種類、すなわち出力表示の表
示領域４０に示される処理データが線グラフ、棒グラフ
などどんな形で表示されるかを選択する。表示の種類の
選択はデータの種類、データが名目値、順序値、間隔値
または比値のいずれからなるかどうかに基づく。名目及
び順序値はすべて整数として数えられ、例えば、従業員
、国、製品及び製品分野が含まれる。間隔値は、温度、
圧力または時間など、絶対ゼロから始まらない値を定義
する。その他の値は全て比値である。
処理データが名目または順序値の関数として表示される
名目または順序値である場合、処理データは黒値の集合
として表示される。処理データが間隔または比値の関数
として表示される名目または順序値からなる場合、ある
いは逆の場合、処理データは棒グラフとして表示され、
軸に沿った各種のベースが名目または順序値を表示する
。さらに、処理データが間隔または比値の関数として表
示される間隔値または比値からなる場合、処理データは
線グラフとして表示される。
上記を背景として、第１図を再び参照すればプリプロセ
ッサ１２は、端末１１が入力画面（第２Ａ図）を表示す
るのを可能にすると共に、各タイル３１．３３．３５．
３７に関してユーザが選んだ端末酉からの支持を受は取
るプロセッサモジュール５０を含む。プロセッサモジュ
ール５０は、記述子モジュール５１内の記述子情報とカ
タログ１３のスクリプトモジュール６０内のスクリプト
情報を用い、選ばれたタイルに基づいて、各タイルに対
応したデータの種類及びデータを含んだ関係２０を識別
する。記述子から関係２０を識別した後、プロセッサモ
ジュール５０は、カタログ１３内のデータベース識別／
アドレスモジュール５２の内容を用いて、要求データを
含むデータベース１０を識別すると共に、同じくカタロ
グ１３内のデータ名／属性モジュール５３を用いて、各
種データベース１０から必要とされる各種類のデータ毎
に必要データの検索要求をフォーミュレートするー。
端末１１でユーザによって選ばれたタイルで必要なデー
タを含む、データベース１０の各々毎にデータ検索要求
をフォーミュレートした後、プロセッサモジュール５０
はその要求インタフェース１５を介してデータベース１
０、詳しくはそれぞれのデータベース管理装置２１に転
送し処理が行われる。データベース管理装置２１はそれ
ぞれの関係２０から必要なデータを受は取り、検索デー
ータをインタフェース１３を介してプリプロセッサ１２
に転送する。次いでプロセッサモジュールは、データ記
憶モジュール５４及びキャッシュ１４内にデータを記ｔ
α可能とし、カタログ１３のキャッシュデータ記述子モ
ジュール５５内のキャッシュデータ記述子を更新する。
キャッシュデータ記述子が、キャッシュ１４内に記憶さ
れるデータの各種項目に関する検索基準を識別する。
検索データがプリプロセッサ１２のデータモジュール５
４内に記憶された後、プロセッサモジュール５０は、端
末１１の入力画面（第２Ａ図）の機能象限３２内のタイ
ル中からユーザによって指定された機能に基づいてデー
タに対する処理演算を開始ル、出力画面（第２Ｂ図）上
に出力グラフを与える。出力グラフの発生において、プ
ロセッサモジュール５０は、データの種類すなわち表示
されるべきデータが名目、順序、間隔または比値のいず
れであるかを記述した、カタログ１３内の選ばれたメタ
（超）データモジュール５７及びプリプロセッサモジュ
ール１２内のメタデークモジュール５６の内容を用いる
。つまり、プロセッサモジュール５０は両モジュール５
Ｇと５７から受は取ったメタデータ情報を用いて、処理
データが表示されるべき方法と発生されるグラフを決め
る。
本システムでは、ユーザが結果を達成するのにいかに照
会プログラムを発生させるかを知る必要なく、データ検
索要求を発生し、検索データがいかに処理及び表示され
るべきかを決めればよい。
ユーザは、出力表示がユーザのニーズを満たすように、
照会、処理及び各種の表示基準を直接制御することがで
きる。ユーザは、報告プログラムを発生するのにプログ
ラマ−が必要な場合より、はるかに短い時間で照会を発
生し、結果を見られる。
さらに１本システムは、異なる種類のデータベース２０
の混合を容易とする。モジュール１０内の記述子、モジ
ュール６０内のスクリプト、及びプロセッサモジュール
５０がデータ検索要求の発生で用いるモジュール５３内
の名前と属性によって与えられる情報が、異なる種類の
データベースを本システムで与えるのを可能とする。
以上の説明は、本発明の特定実施例に制限されている。
しかし、発明の利点の一部または全てを達成しつつ、本
発明を変形及び変更し得ることは明かであろう。従って
、特許請求の範囲の目的は、発明の真の精神及び範囲内
に入るそのような変形及び変更を全て包含するものであ
る。

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 １、Ａ、データを記憶し、データ検索基準の受信に応じ
    てデータを検索するデータベース； Ｂ、端末であって： ｉ、ａ、ユーザによって選択されるデータ選択基準識別
    子；及び ｂ、ユーザによって選択される機能選択基準識別子；を
    有する入力画面；及び ｉｉ、処理データを表示する出力画面； を含む端末； Ｃ、前記端末からの選ばれたデータ選択基準に応じて、
    データ検索要求を発生すると共に、選ばれた機能選択基
    準によって要求された検索データを処理し、処理された
    データを発生するプロセッサで、該処理データを端末に
    送って出力画面上に表示させるプロセッサ；を備えたシ
    ステム。 ２、前記処理データがデータの種類によって識別され、
    前記プロセッサが処理データのデータの種類に基づいて
    表示の種類を選択する請求項１記載のシステム。
