A printed circuit board drilling machine generally uses a drill 1 with a collar 3 inserted into a shank portion 2, as shown in FIG. Here, one end surface of the collar 3 is set at a predetermined distance from the cutting edge of the drill 1. Since it is required to form many holes with different diameters in printed circuit boards, conventionally, a large number of tool holding devices such as the one shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,973,863 have been installed on the work table of a printed circuit board drilling machine. The drills 1 are arranged in such a way that they each hold a required drill 1. This tool holding device
As shown in the figure, a screw 6 is attached to a tool plate 5 fixed on a work table 4 of a printed circuit board drilling machine.
is fixed. The main body 7 of the tool holding device is inserted into a hole in the tool plate 5. A sleeve 8 that is slidable in the axial direction and a spring 9 that pushes up the sleeve 8 are inserted into the main body 7, and are supported by a receiver 10 fitted at one end of the main body 7. The upper end of the sleeve 8 supports the collar 3 and holds the drill 1.

With respect to the drill 1 supported in this way, the spindle 11 is lowered from above, and the collet 12 assembled in the spindle 11 is moved to the shank portion 2 of the drill 1.
The collet 12 is adapted to hold the drill 1 in a state where the collet 1 is fitted into the collar 3 and the end face of the collet 12 is in contact with the collar 3. If the collet 3 is pushed down when the collet 12 comes into contact with the collar 3, when the collet 12 holds the drill 1, the end face of the collet 12 and the end face of the collar 3 will be held in contact with each other. Therefore, spindle 1
The dimension from the tip surface of the drill 1 to the cutting edge of the drill 1 becomes constant, making it possible to control the machining depth during drilling.

However, in such a tool holding device, friction between the collet 12 and the shank portion 2 of the drill 1 increases due to insufficient opening amount of the collet 12 or misalignment between the tool holding device and the collet 12.
The collet 12 may hold the drill 1 without making contact between the collet 12 and the collar 3.

In such a case, the machining depth during drilling becomes large, leading to problems such as shortening the life of the drill 1 and causing the drill 1 to break.

In the above configuration, the housing 14 and the table 4 are moved to align the spindle 11 and the tool holding device 16 holding the required drill 1. Spindle 11 with collector 12 open
is lowered to fit the collet 12 into the shank portion 2 of the drill 1. As shown in FIG. 3, the collet 12 is closed and the drill 1 is held by the collet 12. At this time, the end face of the collect 12 and the collar 3

is pushed up, the shank portion 2 of the drill 1 is pushed into the collet 12, and the collar 3 comes into contact with the end surface of the collet 12. After a certain period of time has elapsed after the collet 12 is opened, the collet 12 closes and holds the drill 1. By holding the drill 1 in the collet 12 in this manner, the drill 1 can be held securely.

Then, as shown in FIG. 4A, the spindle 1
1 to a position lowered by "Z1" from its rising end. At this time, if the drill 1 is held in a normal state, the cutting edge of the drill 1 is located above the optical axis of the light emitting element 26 and the light receiving element 27 by "a", and the light from the light emitting element 26 is transmitted to the light receiving element. Detected at 27. In addition, if the drill 1 is held abnormally, for example, if the collar 3 is not in contact with the end face of the collet, or if the mounting position of the collar 3 is shifted upward, the cutting edge of the drill 1 will be exposed to the light emitted from the light emitting element. The light receiving element 27 cannot receive the light. Therefore, the presence or absence of an abnormality can be detected from the output of the light receiving element 27. Next, as shown in FIG. 4B, the spindle 11 is moved to a position lowered by "Z2" from its upper end.
At this time, when the drill 1 is held in a normal state, the cutting edge of the drill 1 is located below the optical axis of the light emitting element 26 and the light receiving element 27 by "b" and blocks the light from the light emitting element 26. In addition, if something is wrong with the drill 1, for example, if the cutting edge is broken, or if the mounting position of the collar 3 is shifted downward, the drill 1 will not block the light from the light emitting element 26, so it will not receive the light. The element 27 can receive light. Therefore, the presence or absence of an abnormality can be detected from the output of the light receiving element 27.
