Description
〔技術分野〕
本発明は、該セラミツクスの強度を向上せしめ
る方法に関するものである。 〔従来技術と問題点〕 酸化アルミニウム等のセラミツクスは、従来か
ら有望な構造用材料として注目されているが、必
ずしも広く使用されるには至つていない。その原
因の一つとして、機械的強度に比較的大きなばら
つきを示すという欠点があげられる。このばらつ
きを少なくする試みとしては、材料精製法の工
夫、焼結用粉末の改良、焼結用助剤等の工夫、焼
結工程の工夫等が為され、ばらつきも比較的小さ
くなつた。しかし、未だ、上記欠点は解決されて
いない。 上記機械的強度がばらつく原因としては、セラ
ミツクス中に存在する微細なき裂等の欠陥、特に
セラミツクスの表面に存在する欠陥、がその一つ
として考えられている。すなわち、微細な欠陥に
ある臨界以上の応力が作用すると、該欠陥は急速
に材料内部へと伝ぱし、最終的には該セラミツク
スを横断し破壊させる。 そこで、発明者らはセラミツクスに粒子を打ち
込んで、セラミツクスの表面を改質することがで
きれば、セラミツクス表面の欠陥感受性が低下し
てセラミツクスの強度が向上するのではないかと
考え、種々の研究を進めた。その結果、本発明を
為すに至つた。 〔本発明の目的〕 本発明は、セラミツクスの強度を向上させる方
法の提供を目的とするのである。 〔本発明の構成〕 本発明はセラミツクスに金属イオンを1×1016
〜1×1018イオン/cm2照射した後、該セラミツク
スを1000〜1400℃の温度で熱処理することを特徴
とするセラミツクスの強化方法である。 本発明におけるセラミツクスは、従来知られて
いるセラミツクスであり、酸化アルミニウム
(AlF3)等が代表的なものである。 これらのセラミツクスは、単結晶のもの、ある
いは、粉末を所望の形状に焼結した多結晶のもの
である。焼結体の場合には、焼結用助剤、その他
添加成分が含まれていてもよい。該焼結体の製造
方法としては、常圧焼結、ホツトプレス、HIP
等、いずれの方法で製造したものでもよい。セラ
ミツクスの表面は、イオン照射に先立つて、あら
かじめ、凹凸をなくすために研摩しておき、さら
にアセトン等の有機溶剤で洗浄しておくのがよ
い。そして、該セラミツクスにイオンを照射す
る。イオンを照射する部分は、セラミツクス全体
でもよいが、使用中に作用応力の集中する部位の
みでもよい。 照射する金属イオンとしては、チタン(Ti)、
クロム(Cr)、マンガン(Mn)、鉄(Fe)、ニツ
ケル(Ni)、コバルト(Co)等である。 イオンを照射する具体的な方法として、次のよ
うなものがある。しかし、本発明では、この方法
に限られるものではない。 図に、イオン照射用装置の概略図を示す。この装
置は、主としてイオン発生部1、イオン引出し部
2、イオンビーム偏向(分析)部3、加速部4、イ
オンビーム走査部5、照射用真空槽6、照射台7、
イオンビーム電流量計測部8から構成されてい
る。そして被照射体としてのセラミツクス9は、照
射台7の上に設置される。イオン照射用真空槽6
の真空度は、1×10-6torr程度とするのがよい。 上記装置を使用して、イオン照射を行なう。ま
ず、イオン源物質をイオン発生部1に供給し、プ
ラズマ状態にして、イオンとし、該イオンをイオ
ン引出し装置2により外へ引き出し、イオンビー
ムとする。これらのイオンは、偏向部又は分析部
3を通過し、希望するイオン種のみを選択するこ
とができる。さらに、選択したイオンのみを加速
部4に導き、所望の加速電圧で加熱する。こうし
て、所望の種類、および所望のエネルギーを有す
るイオンをビームとしてセラミツクス9に照射す
る。このとき、イオンビーム走査部5により、セ
ラミツクスの照射面上を走査し、所望の量の照射
を行なう。イオンの照射量は、イオンビーム電流
量計測部8で測定することができる。 イオンに与えるエネルギーはイオンのセラミツ
クスへの侵入深さ、材料に与える損傷等の関係か
ら少なくとも30KeVから5MeV、多くても10MeV
程度である。10MeV以上にすると、セラミツク
スに損傷を与え、逆にその強度が低下する。 また、照射量は、照射面積1cm2当り1×1016〜
1×1018イオンとするのがよい。1×1018イオ
ン/cm2より多くのイオンを照射するとセラミツク
スの強度が急激に低下する。また、1×1016イオ
ン/cm2未満では、量が少ないので、目立つた強度
の向上は見られない。 金属イオンを照射したのち、1000〜1400℃の温
度で熱処理すると、セラミツクスの強度は増加す
る。 〔実施例〕 C面カツトしたAl2O3単結晶を鏡面研摩し、寸
法が7×25×1mmの試料を多数枚用意した。その
のち、研摩による歪を除去するために、大気中で
1500℃、6時間保持の熱処理を施した。そして、
試料の表面に、バンデグラーフ型加速器を用いて
Niイオン、Mnイオンを照射した。各イオンの照射
条件として、エネルギーは400KeVで、照射量は3
×1017イオン/cm2とした。この時の各イオンの
Al2O3への侵入深さ(飛程)は、ともに0.15μmであ
る。このイオン照射したAl2O3単結晶板を大気雰
囲気で1300℃、1時間保持の条件で熱処理した。 その後、インストロン型材料試験機を用いて、
スパンが20mm、スパン中央部に負荷する三点曲げ
試験を行ない、セラミツクスの破壊荷重を求め
た。三点曲げ試験に際しては、セラミツクスのイ
オン照射面が引張負荷となるようにした。得られ
た結果を表に示す。

きれば、セラミツクス表面の欠陥感受性が低下し
てセラミツクスの強度が向上するのではないかと
考え、種々の研究を進めた。その結果、本発明を
為すに至つた。 〔本発明の目的〕 本発明は、セラミツクスの強度を向上させる方
法の提供を目的とするのである。 〔本発明の構成〕 本発明はセラミツクスに金属イオンを1×1016
〜1×1018イオン/cm2照射した後、該セラミツク
スを1000〜1400℃の温度で熱処理することを特徴
とするセラミツクスの強化方法である。 本発明におけるセラミツクスは、従来知られて
いるセラミツクスであり、酸化アルミニウム
(AlF3)等が代表的なものである。 これらのセラミツクスは、単結晶のもの、ある
いは、粉末を所望の形状に焼結した多結晶のもの
である。焼結体の場合には、焼結用助剤、その他
添加成分が含まれていてもよい。該焼結体の製造
方法としては、常圧焼結、ホツトプレス、HIP
等、いずれの方法で製造したものでもよい。セラ
ミツクスの表面は、イオン照射に先立つて、あら
かじめ、凹凸をなくすために研摩しておき、さら
にアセトン等の有機溶剤で洗浄しておくのがよ
い。そして、該セラミツクスにイオンを照射す
る。イオンを照射する部分は、セラミツクス全体
でもよいが、使用中に作用応力の集中する部位の
みでもよい。 照射する金属イオンとしては、チタン(Ti)、
クロム(Cr)、マンガン(Mn)、鉄(Fe)、ニツ
ケル(Ni)、コバルト(Co)等である。 イオンを照射する具体的な方法として、次のよ
うなものがある。しかし、本発明では、この方法
に限られるものではない。 図に、イオン照射用装置の概略図を示す。この装
置は、主としてイオン発生部1、イオン引出し部
2、イオンビーム偏向(分析)部3、加速部4、イ
オンビーム走査部5、照射用真空槽6、照射台7、
イオンビーム電流量計測部8から構成されてい
る。そして被照射体としてのセラミツクス9は、照
射台7の上に設置される。イオン照射用真空槽6
の真空度は、1×10-6torr程度とするのがよい。 上記装置を使用して、イオン照射を行なう。ま
ず、イオン源物質をイオン発生部1に供給し、プ
ラズマ状態にして、イオンとし、該イオンをイオ
ン引出し装置2により外へ引き出し、イオンビー
ムとする。これらのイオンは、偏向部又は分析部
3を通過し、希望するイオン種のみを選択するこ
とができる。さらに、選択したイオンのみを加速
部4に導き、所望の加速電圧で加熱する。こうし
て、所望の種類、および所望のエネルギーを有す
るイオンをビームとしてセラミツクス9に照射す
る。このとき、イオンビーム走査部5により、セ
ラミツクスの照射面上を走査し、所望の量の照射
を行なう。イオンの照射量は、イオンビーム電流
量計測部8で測定することができる。 イオンに与えるエネルギーはイオンのセラミツ
クスへの侵入深さ、材料に与える損傷等の関係か
ら少なくとも30KeVから5MeV、多くても10MeV
程度である。10MeV以上にすると、セラミツク
スに損傷を与え、逆にその強度が低下する。 また、照射量は、照射面積1cm2当り1×1016〜
1×1018イオンとするのがよい。1×1018イオ
ン/cm2より多くのイオンを照射するとセラミツク
スの強度が急激に低下する。また、1×1016イオ
ン/cm2未満では、量が少ないので、目立つた強度
の向上は見られない。 金属イオンを照射したのち、1000〜1400℃の温
度で熱処理すると、セラミツクスの強度は増加す
る。 〔実施例〕 C面カツトしたAl2O3単結晶を鏡面研摩し、寸
法が7×25×1mmの試料を多数枚用意した。その
のち、研摩による歪を除去するために、大気中で
1500℃、6時間保持の熱処理を施した。そして、
試料の表面に、バンデグラーフ型加速器を用いて
Niイオン、Mnイオンを照射した。各イオンの照射
条件として、エネルギーは400KeVで、照射量は3
×1017イオン/cm2とした。この時の各イオンの
Al2O3への侵入深さ(飛程)は、ともに0.15μmであ
る。このイオン照射したAl2O3単結晶板を大気雰
囲気で1300℃、1時間保持の条件で熱処理した。 その後、インストロン型材料試験機を用いて、
スパンが20mm、スパン中央部に負荷する三点曲げ
試験を行ない、セラミツクスの破壊荷重を求め
た。三点曲げ試験に際しては、セラミツクスのイ
オン照射面が引張負荷となるようにした。得られ
た結果を表に示す。

これらの表からわかるように、照射後1300℃も
の高温にさらした後の強度は、未照射のものと比
べ約55%高くなつている。また、照射のままの状
態での強度よりもむしろ若干増大している。これ
は、イオン照射による強度増大効果が、高温にさ
らされた後も保持されることを示すものである。
なお、照射後1300℃で熱処理した試験片のX線回
折測定を行なつたところ、表層にNiAl2O4あるい
はMnAl2O4系の化合物がAl2O3中に分散して形成
されていた。
の高温にさらした後の強度は、未照射のものと比
べ約55%高くなつている。また、照射のままの状
態での強度よりもむしろ若干増大している。これ
は、イオン照射による強度増大効果が、高温にさ
らされた後も保持されることを示すものである。
なお、照射後1300℃で熱処理した試験片のX線回
折測定を行なつたところ、表層にNiAl2O4あるい
はMnAl2O4系の化合物がAl2O3中に分散して形成
されていた。

本発明によれば、単結晶、多結晶、いずれのセ
ラミツクスにおいても、高エネルギーイオンを1
×1016〜1×1018イオン/cm2照射した後、該セラ
ミツクスを高温で熱処理することにより該セラミ
ツクスの強度が増加する。

Claims (1)
- 【特許請求の範囲】 1 セラミツクスに金属イオンを1×1016〜1×
1018イオン/cm2照射した後、該セラミツクスを
1000〜1400℃の温度で熱処理することを特徴とす
るセラミツクスの強化方法。 2 セラミツクスはAl2O3であることを特徴とす
る特許請求の範囲第1項記載のセラミツクスの強
化方法。 3 金属イオンは、Ni、Mnであることを特徴と
する特許請求の範囲第1項記載のセラミツクスの
強化方法。 4 金属イオンは、30KeV〜5MeVのエネルギー
を有するものであることを特徴とする特許請求の
範囲第1項記載のセラミツクスの強化方法。
