Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain superior display quality even when characters or patterns are constituted by using display elements at the outermost ends of the effective display range of a liquid crystal panel by providing electrode patterns corresponding to scanning electrodes and signal electrodes outside the effective display range. CONSTITUTION:A part 14 outside the effective display range is provided with an upper electrode 15 and a lower electrode 16 outside the effective display range corresponding to scanning electrodes 5 and a left electrode and a right electrode 8 outside the effective display range corresponding to signal electrodes 6 so that the effective display range 8 is surrounded. Then when the liquid crystal display panel 1 is in a display state, a driving circuit 9 for the scanning electrodes and a driving circuit 10 for the signal electrodes apply those electrodes with such voltages that display picture elements 7 within the effective display range 8 make no display. Therefore, the background color of the part 14 outside the effective display range has the same hue with the background color of the part 8 within the effective display range and their border is eliminated. Consequently, even when characters or patterns are constituted by using display picture elements 7 at the outermost ends of the effective display range 8, their display quality is improved.

Conventional liquid crystal display devices are configured as described above, so when configuring characters or images using the outermost display pixels (7) of the effective display range (8), the outermost display pixels (7) of the effective display range (8) The hue of the base color and the base color outside the effective display range (14) is different, resulting in poor display quality. Especially outside the effective display range (14)
If the background color of the image is the same as the display color of the text or image, it becomes difficult to distinguish the text or image.
