In a recording/reproducing apparatus using a tape cassette having a rotary lid, the cassette has a depth dimension smaller than the distance between the front edge of the bottom wall of the cassette body and the tape in the unloading state, and the tape is received within the opening of the cassette. A protective part, which has a dimension higher than the height of functional parts of the recording/playback apparatus such as a tape pull-out pin, and which avoids contact between the functional parts and the tape cassette, is provided at the opening of the tape cassette at the mounting position. 1.
