1. Technical Field This invention relates generally to a protective fabric sleeve for providing protection to an elongated member housed therein, and more particularly to a fabric sleeve having an elastomeric coating having indicator markings therein.

2. Related Art Protective fabric sleeves are known for providing protection to elongated members extending therethrough. Protective fabric sleeves having circumferentially continuous closed walls or wrappable walls having longitudinally extending opposed edges configured to be wrapped around one another in an overlapping relationship are also known. In some cases, the aforementioned known sleeves have an elastomeric coating for added protection to the contents contained within the sleeve. It is further known to include indicia on the exterior surface of the sleeve for identification purposes, such as a name and/or product number, which are typically applied in ink by inkjet technology, pad printing, or other ink application. While the aforementioned indicia may prove useful initially, problems may arise due to degradation, particularly when exposed to heat and/or fluids, such that the indicia wears off.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENTLY PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring more particularly to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 show, by way of example and not limitation, a sleeve 10, 10' having a circumferentially continuous seamless wall 12 and a wrappable wall 12', respectively, for routing and protecting an elongated member 14, such as a cable, wire harness, or tube. The elongated wrappable wall 12' has opposing inner and outer free side or side edges, also referred to simply as edges 16, 17, which extend generally parallel to a central longitudinal axis 18, with both walls 12, 12' respectively extending between opposing open ends 19, 20; 19', 20'. The opposing edges 16, 17 of the wrappable wall 12' can be forced into overlapping relationship in the manner of a "cigarette wrap" to completely encapsulate the elongated member 14 within the central cavity C of the sleeve 10'. The walls 12, 12' have an innermost or innermost surface, also referred to as an inner surface 21, 21', and an outermost or outermost surface, also referred to as an outer surface 23, 23', with the cavity C defined and bounded by the innermost surface 21, 21'. The walls 12, 12' are formed of interwoven yarns 25 (shown in separate partial break areas in Figs. 1 and 2, the yarns 25 may be woven, knitted or braided as shown, which may include monofilaments and/or multifilaments, and a coating 27 of elastomeric material bonded to the outer surface 29, 29' of the walls 12, 12'. The coating 27 has indicia 28 therein, including any desired symbols, numbers, letters, etc., to provide information to a person viewing the outer surface 30 of the coating 27. The indicia 28 extend radially inwardly into the outer surface 30 of the coating 27 toward the central longitudinal axis 18, providing a depth (d) to the indicia 28 to avoid easy wear. Thus, the sleeves 10, 10' may be shipped, stored, and used without concern that the indicia 28 will wear away.

The indicators 28 do not extend through the entire thickness (t) of the coating 27 to avoid exposing the outer surface 29, 29' underneath the interwoven threads 25. Thus, the depth d is less than the thickness t, so that the threads 25 remain fully protected by the coating 27 throughout the entire sleeve 10, 10', including the area of the indicators 28, thereby avoiding exposure of the threads 25 to environmental elements (debris), thermal conditions. According to one aspect, the depth d of the indicators 28 is between about 25 and 75 percent of the thickness t of the coating 27, and according to a further aspect, the depth d of the indicators 28 is greater than 50 percent of the thickness t of the coating 27 to best ensure that the indicators 28 do not wear off, but less than 75 percent of the thickness t to avoid undesired exposure of the underlying threads 25.

The elastomeric material of the coating 27 may be provided as a silicone-based material, and the yarn 25 may be woven, braided, or interwoven by knitting.

According to another aspect of the disclosure, a method of constructing a fabric protective sleeve 10, 10' is provided. The method includes weaving threads 25 to form walls 12, 12' having inner surfaces 21, 21' and outer surfaces 29, 29' extending between opposite ends 19, 20; 19', 20'. Further, bonding a coating 27 of elastomeric material to the entire outer surfaces 29, 29', and forming an indicator 28 extending radially inwardly into the outer surface 30 of the coating 27 to provide a depth (d) to the indicator 28 to avoid easy wear.

The method may further include forming the indicators 28 such that the indicators 28 do not extend through the entire thickness (t) of the coating 27, such that the depth d is less than the thickness t to avoid exposing the lower outer surfaces 29, 29' of the interwoven yarns 25.

The method may further include providing the elastomeric material of the coating 27 as a silicone or silicone-based material.

The method may further include weaving the yarn 25 through one of a weaving, braiding, or knitting process.

The method may further include forming the indicia 28 with a laser.
Walls 12, 12' can be constructed to have any suitable size, including length and diameter, depending on the needs of the application. If wall 12' is formed as a self-wrapping wall, at least a portion of yarns 25 extending circumferentially in the weft direction, whether multifilament and/or monofilament, can be provided as any suitable thermosetting polymeric material, such as, for example, polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
