Background
1. Field of the invention
The present invention relates generally to protective textile sleeves for providing protection to elongate members received therein, and more particularly to textile sleeves having an elastomeric coating with indicia therein.
2. Related Art
Protective textile sleeves for providing protection to elongate members extending therethrough are known. Protective textile sleeves having a circumferentially continuous, closed or wrappable wall with opposite longitudinally extending edges configured to be wrapped in overlapping relation with one another are also known. In some cases, the above-mentioned known sleeves have an elastic coating to increase the protection of the content contained in the sleeve. It is further known to include indicia, such as a name and/or product number, on the outer surface of the sleeve for identification purposes, wherein the indicia are typically provided in ink, via inkjet technology, pad printing, or other ink application. Although the above-described indicia may initially prove useful, problems can arise due to the indicia being worn away by decomposition, particularly when exposed to heat and/or fluids.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT DISCLOSURE
According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a protective textile sleeve for providing protection to an elongate member received therein and a method of construction thereof is provided. The sleeve has a wall formed of interwoven yarns and a coating of an elastomeric material bonded to an outer surface of the wall. The coating has indicia therein to provide information to a viewer viewing the outer surface of the coating, wherein the indicia extend radially inward into the outer surface of the coating to provide indicia having a depth to avoid being susceptible to wear. Thus, the sleeve can be transported, stored and used without fear of the indicia being worn away.
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the indicia do not extend through the entire thickness of the coating, thereby avoiding exposing the underlying outer surface of the interlaced yarns.

According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the indicia may be formed to a depth greater than 50% of the coating thickness, thereby enhancing the ability to prevent inadvertent wear of the indicia, wherein the depth does not extend through the entire thickness of the coating to avoid unwanted exposure of the underlying yarn, thereby preventing wear and damage to the yarn.
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the elastomeric material is a silicone-based material.
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the yarns may be interwoven via weaving (woven), braiding (woven), or knitting (knit).
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, a method of constructing a textile protective sleeve is provided. The method includes interlacing yarn to form a wall having an inner surface and an outer surface extending between opposite ends. In addition, a coating of an elastomeric material is bonded to the outer surface and forms indicia that extend inwardly into the outer surface of the coating to provide indicia having a depth to avoid being susceptible to wear.
According to another aspect of the disclosure, the method may further include forming the indicia so that it does not extend through the entire thickness of the coating, thereby avoiding exposing the underlying outer surface of the interwoven yarns.
According to another aspect of the disclosure, the method may further include marking a depth of between about 25-75% of the thickness of the coating to avoid abrasion of the marking while avoiding undesirable exposure of the underlying yarn to prevent abrasion and damage of the yarn.
According to another aspect of the disclosure, the method may further include forming the indicia to a depth greater than 50% of the thickness of the coating to enhance the ability to prevent inadvertent wear of the indicia, the depth not extending through the entire thickness of the coating to avoid undesired exposure of the underlying yarn to prevent wear and damage to the yarn.
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the method may further include providing the elastomeric material as a silicone-based material.
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the method may further comprise interlacing the yarn via one of weaving, braiding, or knitting.
According to another aspect of the present disclosure, the method may further include forming a mark with a laser.
Brief Description of Drawings
These and other aspects, features and advantages of the present disclosure will become more readily appreciated when considered in connection with the following detailed description of the presently preferred embodiments and best mode, the appended claims and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
fig. 1 is a perspective view of a protective sleeve having a circumferentially continuous seamless wall, shown secured around an elongated member to be protected, according to one aspect of the present disclosure.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a protective sleeve having a wrappable wall, shown secured about an elongate member to be protected, according to another aspect of the present disclosure; and
fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken substantially along line 3-3 of fig. 1.
Detailed Description
Referring in more detail to the drawings, FIGS. 1 and 2 show sleeves 10, 10 'having a circumferentially continuous seamless wall 12 and a wrappable wall 12', respectively, for routing and protecting an elongate member 14, such as a cable, harness or tube, for example, but not limited thereto. The elongated wrappable wall 12 'has opposite inner and outer free sides or side edges, also referred to simply as edges 16, 17, which extend generally parallel to the central longitudinal axis 18, with the two walls 12, 12' extending between opposite open ends (19, 20; 19 ', 20'). The opposite edges 16, 17 of the wrappable wall 12 ' may be biased into overlapping relation with one another in a "cigarette" manner, such as via heat setting formed in the yarns of the wall 12 ' to completely enclose the elongate member 14 within the central cavity C of the sleeve 10 '. The walls 12, 12 'have innermost faces or surfaces, also referred to as inner surfaces 21, 21', and outermost faces or surfaces, also referred to as outer surfaces 23, 23 ', with the cavity C being defined and bounded by the innermost surfaces 21, 21'. The walls 12, 12 ' are formed of interwoven yarns 25 (shown in the separate partially cut-away regions of fig. 1 and 2, where the yarns 25 may be woven, braided or knitted as shown, where it is understood that the illustration shows different mechanisms for interweaving the yarns, however, only one is performed for any one sleeve), the yarns 25 may comprise monofilaments and/or multifilaments, as well as a coating 27 of an elastomeric material bonded to the outer surface 29, 29 ' of the walls 12, 12 '. The coating 27 has indicia 28 (including any desired symbols, numbers, letters, etc.) therein to provide information to a viewer viewing the outer surface 30 of the coating 27, wherein the indicia 28 extend radially inward toward the central longitudinal axis 18 to the outer surface 30 of the coating 27 to provide a depth (d) to the indicia 28 to avoid being susceptible to wear. Thus, the sleeve 10, 10' can be shipped, stored and used without fear of the indicia 28 being worn away.
The indicia 28 do not extend through the entire thickness (t) of the coating 27 so as to avoid exposing the underlying outer surfaces 29, 29' of the interlaced yarns 25. Thus, the depth d is less than the thickness t, so that the yarn 25 remains fully protected by the coating 27 throughout the sleeve 10, 10' including the area of the marking 28, thereby avoiding exposure of the yarn 25 to environmental elements (debris, thermal conditions). According to one aspect, the depth d of the markings 28 is between about 25-75% of the thickness t of the coating 27, and according to another aspect, to best ensure that the markings 28 are not worn away, the depth d of the markings 28 is greater than 50% of the thickness t of the coating 27, but less than 75% of the thickness t, to avoid unwanted exposure of the underlying yarn 25.
The elastic material of the coating 27 may be provided as a silicone-based material and the yarns 25 may be interwoven by weaving, braiding or knitting.
In accordance with another aspect of the present disclosure, a method of constructing a textile protective sleeve 10, 10' is provided. The method includes interweaving yarns 25 to form a wall 12, 12 ', the wall 12, 12' having an inner surface 21, 21 'and an outer surface 29, 29' extending between opposite ends (19, 20; 19 ', 20'). Furthermore, a coating 27 of an elastomeric material is bonded to the entire outer surface 29, 29' and forms a mark 28 which extends radially inwardly to the outer surface 30 of the coating 27 to provide a depth (d) to the mark 28 to avoid being susceptible to wear.
The method may further include forming the indicia 28 so that it does not extend through the entire thickness (t) of the coating 27 so that the depth d is less than the thickness t, thereby avoiding exposing the underlying outer surfaces 29, 29' of the interwoven yarns 25.
The method may further comprise providing the elastomeric material as a coating 27 of silicone or silicone-based material.
The method may further include interlacing the yarn 25 via one of a weaving, braiding, or knitting process.
The method may further include forming the mark 28 with a laser.
The walls 12, 12' may be configured to have any suitable dimensions, including length and diameter, as desired for the application. If the wall 12' is formed as a self-wrapping wall, yarns 25 at least some of the multifilaments and/or monofilaments extending in the weft direction, circumferentially, may be provided as any suitable heat-settable polymeric material, such as polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
Many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. It is, therefore, to be understood that the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described and that the scope of the invention is defined by any ultimately allowed claims. Specifically, all the features of the ownership claims and all the embodiments may be combined with each other as long as they are not contradictory to each other.
