Description
The present invention relates to mass spectrometry, and more particularly to an ionization apparatus for providing ions for mass spectrometry, and a method for providing such ions.
Recent mass spectrometry / spectroscopic methods rely on feeding ionized analytes to downstream mass spectrometers. The ionized analyte may be supplied by an ionizer, often in the solvent, that converts the unionized analyte into gas phase ions.
Downstream, ions may be separated based on their mass-to-charge ratio, usually by accelerating them and exposing them to an electric or magnetic field. This enables the detection and analysis of various chemical samples. Mass spectrometry has been found to have a variety of uses and may be used in the detection of unknown or known compounds.

The figure shows an exemplary embodiment.
In each embodiment, the ionizer comprises a probe having a plurality of coaxially aligned ducts. The conduit may carry the liquid as well as the atomized and heated gases at various flow rates and temperatures in order to generate ions from the liquid source. The outermost conduit defines a companion area for transferring and entraining ions in the gas with respect to a defined distance along the length of the conduit. In each embodiment, various voltages may be applied to the plurality of conduits to assist ionization and to guide the ions.

The ionizer 14 further includes a
In the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 1, each of the

For example, the concentration of the analyte in the solution, ranging from less than 1 femtogram / μL to more than 1 microgram / μL, may be introduced through the inner
The inner
The gas G1 may be, for example, zero air / clean air nitrogen provided by a pressurized source such as a container (not shown).
The gas G2 may be, for example, air / clean air, nitrogen, or the like.
The gases G1 and G2 may be maintained at temperatures between about 30 ° C and 700 ° C, but lower temperatures may be possible. The usual temperature range is between 250 ° C and 700 ° C, but higher temperatures may be possible.

The inner gas G1 produces a

In the illustrated embodiment, the
The
The inner
In the illustrated embodiment, the flow rate of the first gas G1 in the
The gas G1 and the gas G2 may be introduced at a pressure in the range of 101 kPa to 1000 kPa, usually in the range of 300 kPa to 700 kPa.
Velocity v1 and velocity v2 are affected by the pressure upstream of G1 and G2, as well as the diameter of the tube. The exit speed v1 may be subsonic or sonic. The velocity v2 is usually much lower than v1.
The
An analyte solvated at the
The gas G2 may further interact with the analyte and the gas G1. This interaction can be physical or chemical, thereby entraining the formed ions with the gas G2 as these ions then exit the
As discussed, the voltage V innermost to the

The voltage applied to the
The polarity of the voltage can be selected depending on the charge of the analyte to be analyzed. For example, typically for positively charged analytes, the
Optionally, a voltage V electrode may be applied to the
The gas G1 exiting the inner
As described in the illustrated embodiment, the flow rate of the second gas G2 proximal to the outlet of the outer
When the transfer gas G2 containing the ionized analyte exits the
In the illustrated embodiment, the
The
The
In the second operating mode, a high voltage V electrode may be applied to the
In this second mode of operation, the analyte associated with the gas G2 may be ionized with low efficiency depending on the polarity, polarizability, solution matrix, solution composition, pH, etc. of the analyte. , Ionization may instead be enabled at the
In a further third mode of operation, the
In this mode, the
In the fourth mode of operation, the
In practice, different modes may provide good ionization for different sets of molecules, including improved sensitivity, detection limits, and reproducibility.
For example, the first mode may efficiently generate highly polar molecular ions with high sensitivity. The second mode and the third mode may efficiently produce less polar molecules that react well with APCI, APPI, etc. The fourth mode may efficiently generate less polar molecular ions that respond well to conventional electric sprays.
Therefore, the voltage applied by the voltage source 50 (eg, V outer , V inner , V innermost , and V electrode , and on / off control / voltage of the photon ionizer 60) is, for example, from a column of liquid chromatography analysis. It may be applied continuously over time to correlate with the extraction time. Specific methods may be established for the compound of interest and the optimum voltage may be applied, improving the throughput.
Alternatively, it is possible to utilize only one or two ionization modes in the chromatographic flow. It may then be beneficial to make a rapid transition to the second chromatographic flow without having to physically switch the ion source.
The data of the mass spectrometer may be accompanied by electronic identification and time stamp corresponding to the operating ionization mode. In this way, the data from each mode can be correlated with the appropriate enrichment curve for the quantification of the analyte, allowing rapid data analysis for each mode.
An
However, unlike the
The
The voltage on the
In an alternative embodiment, the
The
However, unlike the
FIG. 4 shows an additional probe 100'that forms part of the ionizer 114'. The probe 100'similar to the functional component of the
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, a voltage of 5000V may be applied to the tube 120', 1000V to the tube 130', and 0V to 500V to the inflow port 134'to generate ESI ions. The opposite polarity may be used for anions. Further, the electrode 162'(similar to the electrode 62) and the photon ionizer 160'(similar to the photon ionizer 60) are placed in the outer gas transfer tube 24'(similar to the outer
