Description
The present invention relates to a mode conversion element and an optical waveguide element used in, for example, optical fiber communication, and more particularly to a mode conversion element and an optical waveguide element that perform mode conversion.
Currently, the amount of information transmitted by optical communication is steadily increasing. In order to cope with such an increase in the amount of information, measures such as an increase in transmission speed and an increase in the number of channels by wavelength multiplexing communication are being promoted. In particular, in the next-generation 100 Gbps digital coherent transmission technology for the purpose of high-speed information communication, a polarization multiplexing method is used in which signals are placed in two polarization modes in which electric fields are orthogonal. In this polarization multiplexing system, the amount of information that can be transmitted per unit time can be doubled compared to an optical transmission system that uses a single polarization mode.
However, the modulation method for high-speed communication including polarization multiplexing requires an optical modulator having a complicated configuration, and there are problems such as an increase in the size and cost of the apparatus. In response to these problems, an optical modulator using a substrate-type optical waveguide using silicon, which has advantages such as easy processing, downsizing by integration, and low cost by mass production, has been studied.
However, the polarization multiplexing in such a substrate type optical waveguide has the following problems.
In general, the shape of a substrate-type optical waveguide is asymmetrical in the width direction that is parallel to the substrate and perpendicular to the light traveling direction, and the height direction that is perpendicular to the substrate and perpendicular to the light traveling direction. Two types of polarization modes, a mode in which the electric field component in the width direction (hereinafter referred to as TE mode) is dominant and a mode in which the electric field component in the height direction is dominant (hereinafter referred to as TM mode). However, characteristics such as effective refractive index are different.
Of these modes, TE 0 and TM 0 are often used. Here, TE 0 indicates a mode having the largest effective refractive index in the TE mode, and TM 0 indicates a mode having the largest effective refractive index in the TM mode.
When optical modulation operation is performed for these modes with different characteristics, it is difficult with only a single substrate type optical waveguide device, and a substrate type optical waveguide device optimized for each mode is required. This requires a great effort in the development of the substrate type optical waveguide device.
As a method for solving this problem, the TE 0 is used as input light to optimized planar optical waveguide device with respect to TE 0, and a method of polarization converting the output into TM 0. Here, the polarization conversion, denote the conversion of TE 0 TM 0, or from TM 0 to TE 0. In order to perform the above operation, a substrate type optical waveguide element that performs polarization conversion on the substrate is required.
As a technique for performing such polarization conversion on a substrate, there is a technique in which TE 0 is converted into TE 1 (hereinafter referred to as TE 0 -TE 1 mode conversion), and then TE 1 is converted into TM 0 . Here, TE 1 represents a TE mode having the second highest effective refractive index. Such a conversion element requires two elements: an element that converts TE 0 to TE 1 and an element that converts TE 1 to TM 0 .
As a prior art of an element having a function of TE 0 -TE 1 mode conversion, there is a waveguide element described in
Here, a TE 0 -TE 1 mode conversion element having two adjacent linear waveguides and using asymmetric directional couplers having different core widths is used.
FIG. 15 (quoting FIG. 2 (a) of Non-Patent Document 1) shows an outline thereof. The
In an asymmetric directional coupler, in order to couple the TE 0 of one core and the TE 1 of the other core with high efficiency at a certain wavelength, the core width is set so that the effective refractive index of each mode becomes equal at this wavelength. Is adjusted.
また、モードの変換は、TEiとTEj(i≠j)、TMiとTMj(i≠j)、TEiとTMj(i,jは同じでも異なっていてもよい)の変換を含む。
The asymmetric directional coupler using a straight waveguide, which is a prior art of the TE 0 -TE 1 mode conversion element, is composed of two parallel waveguides. The TE 0 of one waveguide and the TE 1 of the other waveguide are obtained. In order to couple with high efficiency, it is necessary to adjust the width of each core and make the effective refractive index of each mode comparable.
However, such an asymmetric directional coupler using a linear waveguide has a different amount of change in the effective refractive index with respect to the wavelength at TE 0 and TE 1 even when the effective refractive index is the same at a certain wavelength. If the value changes, the effective refractive index shifts, which makes it difficult to maintain high coupling efficiency over a wide wavelength band.
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and an object thereof is to provide a mode conversion element and an optical waveguide element capable of highly efficient mode conversion in a wide wavelength band.
Here, the mode is a generic term that combines the TE mode and the TM mode. The mode conversion is performed by converting TE i and TE j (i ≠ j), TM i and TM j (i ≠ j), and TE i and TM j (i and j may be the same or different). Including. The mode conversion element refers to an element that performs mode conversion, and includes a TE 0 -TE 1 mode conversion element.
As described above, as a technique for performing polarization conversion on a substrate, there is a technique in which TE 0 is converted to TE 1 (hereinafter referred to as TE 0 -TE 1 mode conversion), and then TE 1 is converted to TM 0. . Such conversion requires two elements: an element that converts TE 0 to TE 1 and an element that converts TE 1 to TM 0 .

Next, the effect of this embodiment will be described.
In the
Thereby, it is possible to correct the deviation of the effective refractive index that occurs when the wavelength changes.
Therefore, highly efficient mode conversion is enabled in a wide wavelength band.
Hereinafter, in order to explain this in detail, first, the coupling efficiency of a directional coupler comprising a straight waveguide, which is a conventional technique, will be described. Based on this, it is shown that the coupling efficiency is lowered due to the wavelength change in the asymmetric directional coupler, and then the effect of the present invention is shown.
Like the
Here, F and q are represented by the following equations, respectively.
Δ is expressed by the following equation.
λと、βi、Niとの間には「βi=(2π/λ)Ni(i=1,2)」という関係がある。
L represents the length of the directional coupler, and N i (i = 1, 2) represents the effective refractive index of each mode to be coupled when two cores constituting the directional coupler exist independently.
λ represents a wavelength. There is a relationship “β i = (2π / λ) N i (i = 1, 2)” between λ and β i and N i .
χ represents the coupling strength of the mode to be coupled in the directional coupler and is called a coupling coefficient and is obtained by the following equation.
Here, E i (i = 1, 2) represents the electric field vector of the mode to be coupled that is guided through the core i (i = 1, 2) (straight waveguide), and N is adjacent to the two cores. Represents the refractive index distribution.
Equation (5) integrates the inner product of the electric fields of both modes in one cross section of the two cores (straight waveguides). From this equation, the larger the electric field that oozes into the cladding part, the more the coupling occurs. You can see that it becomes stronger.
From equations (1) to (3), in general, in order to perform mode conversion with a directional coupler, it is necessary to make Δ shown in equation (4) sufficiently small with respect to χ.
This means that the effective refractive indexes N 1 and N 2 of the two modes to be combined are made equal in Formula (4), and is called phase matching. Here, the same level means a case where Δ <χ holds. Hereinafter, it is assumed that mode coupling is possible when the phase matching is satisfied.
Next, the reason why the coupling efficiency of the asymmetric directional coupler by the straight waveguide is deteriorated by the change of the wavelength will be described.
In general, in all modes (TE mode and TM mode), the effective refractive index decreases as the wavelength increases, and the effective refractive index increases as the wavelength decreases. This is because the larger the wavelength, the wider the electric field distributed around the core, and more leaching into the clad having a lower refractive index than the core.
In general, the amount of change in the effective refractive index with respect to such a wavelength is different for each mode even if the effective refractive index is comparable.
In general, when the same polarization mode (TE mode, TM mode) is compared, the electric field distribution spreads as the higher order mode is reached. As a result, the amount of change in the effective refractive index with respect to the wavelength increases because the seepage into the cladding increases when the wavelength changes.
FIG. 3 shows the change amount of the effective refractive index with respect to the wavelength (the absolute value of the value obtained by differentiating the effective refractive index with respect to the wavelength) with respect to the effective refractive indexes of TE 0 and TE 1 . The effective refractive index is changed by changing the core width. The height of the core was 220 nm and the wavelength was 1580 nm.
As shown in this figure, TE 1 which is a higher-order mode has a larger amount of change with respect to the wavelength.
For this reason, even if the effective refractive indexes of different modes at a certain wavelength are set to the same level, if the wavelengths change, the effective refractive indexes of the respective modes are shifted, and the coupling efficiency is reduced from the equations (1) to (4). I will.
Note that this problem does not occur with a symmetric directional coupler that handles the coupling of the same mode, in which the two cores are equal in height and width, and is unique to an asymmetric directional coupler that handles the coupling of different modes. Problem. In addition, the above problem is not limited to a waveguide having a rectangular core, but a general optical waveguide including a core and a clad such as a rib waveguide or an optical fiber having a circular / elliptical core. It is a serious problem.
The present invention solves this problem by employing a bent waveguide. The reason why the above problem can be solved by the bending waveguide is qualitatively as follows.
When phase matching is considered, when two adjacent cores are bent, the effective refractive index of the outer core mode is the amount related to the ratio of the bending radius of the two cores to the effective refractive index of the inner mode. Increase effectively. This is due to the following reason.
The phase matching condition means a condition for matching the phase velocities of light in different modes propagating through two cores.
As the phase velocities of the two lights are closer, interference with the aligned phases occurs and the coupling increases, and when the deviation between the phase velocities of the two lights increases, interference with non-aligned phases occurs and the coupling decreases.
When the core is bent, the optical paths of the light propagating through the outer core and the light propagating through the inner core are different, and the light of the outer core propagates a longer distance. Therefore, the phase velocity of the light of the outer core is effectively reduced with respect to the light of the inner core.
Since the decrease in phase velocity is equivalent to an increase in effective refractive index (phase velocity = speed of light in vacuum / effective refractive index), when considering velocity matching (ie phase matching), the effective refractive index of the outer waveguide is It will increase effectively.
This can be described quantitatively as follows.
First, as shown in FIG. 1, the coupling efficiency of an asymmetric directional coupler having two cores having the same center and bent into a circular arc with a fixed radius is derived. Here too, reference [1] (Toshiaki Sugawara, “Optical Wave Engineering” Corona) is used as a reference.
In FIG. 1, the radii R a and R b of the
Further, if the waveguide interval (interval between the
In the coordinate system shown in FIG. 1, the phase of propagating light depends only on θ, and considering that the amplitude changes with respect to the change of θ, p. 131 (5.1) of 131 is rewritten as follows.
Here, r represents the coordinate in the width direction of the core with respect to the center O, and y represents the coordinate in the height direction. E (r, y, θ) represents the electric field mode of two adjacent cores, and the first term on the right side is the electric field distribution of the mode of light guided through the
a (θ) and b (θ) indicate terms that change with θ of the electric field distribution of each mode, and E a (r, y) and E b (r, y) indicate terms that change with r and y. ing.
N a and N b indicate effective refractive indexes when light propagates in a direction perpendicular to the core cross section (see an arrow in FIG. 2) when each bending waveguide exists independently.
In equation (6), p. The argument of 131-134 is realized by replacing z with θ.
As a result, the coupling efficiency T ′ of the directional coupler by the bending waveguide can be written as follows.
Further, the following formula is established.
Furthermore, in order to compare the formulas (8) to (11) with the directional coupler using the linear waveguide represented by the formulas (1) to (4), the waveguide is a bent waveguide having an inner circumference. When 1 is rewritten to the equation of the distance component (R a × θ) through which light propagates, the result is as follows.
Comparing the equation (15) related to the phase matching of the bending waveguide with the equation (4) relating to the straight waveguide, in the case of the bending waveguide, N b is multiplied by R b / R a (> 1), It can be seen that the effective refractive index of the outer core of the two cores effectively increases.
Since “(R b / R a ) N b ” in the equation (15) regarding the bending waveguide is obtained by multiplying the effective refractive index N b of the outer core by (R b / R a ) (> 1), The effective refractive index change amount with respect to the wavelength of N b is also multiplied by (R b / R a ), and the deviation of the effective refractive index with respect to the wavelength can be compensated.
In this specification, “effectively increasing the effective refractive index” means that the effective refractive index of the outer core is apparently increased in consideration of phase matching. Note that the phase matching in the bending waveguide is when Δ ′ <χ ′ holds.
As described above, the present invention uses that the effective refractive index is effectively increased by the bending waveguide.
Specifically, for example, the
At this time, as described above, since the lower-order mode has a smaller amount of change in the effective refractive index when the wavelength is changed, by setting the lower-order core on the outer peripheral side of the bending waveguide, It is possible to compensate for the deviation of the change amount with respect to the wavelength. For example, the deviation from the curve of TE 1 can be corrected by moving the curve of TE 0 in FIG. 3 upward.
For this reason, this invention can maintain high coupling efficiency with respect to a wider wavelength.
Here, the case of the rectangular waveguide has been described, but the present invention is not limited to the rectangular waveguide but can be applied to, for example, a directional coupler including a rib waveguide. The rib waveguide has a core having a structure including a rib portion and a slab portion. The slab part is thinner than the rib part and is formed to extend in the width direction of the rib part. In addition, the present invention can be applied to any waveguide.
本発明で扱うモードの変換は、TEiとTEj(i≠j)、TMiとTMj(i≠j)、TEiとTMj(i,jは同じでも異なっていてもよい)の変換を含む。
The present invention can be used in conversion between TE modes of different orders, conversion between TM modes of different orders, and conversion between TE modes and TM modes.
The conversion of the modes handled in the present invention is TE i and TE j (i ≠ j), TM i and TM j (i ≠ j), TE i and TM j (i and j may be the same or different). Includes conversion.
In the example shown in FIG. 1, the bending waveguides (
Note that the mode conversion element of the present invention is not limited to a substrate-type waveguide, and can be composed of an optical fiber coupler obtained by fusing two optical fibers or a multi-core fiber having two cores. This is because the equations (8) to (11) or (12) to (16) representing the coupling efficiency are satisfied even if the specific optical waveguide structure is not defined.
Phase matching is possible not only by changing the core width, but also by changing the height of the core. In the case of a rib waveguide, it is also possible to change the height of the slab part.
However, when the core is manufactured by a single etching, it is preferable that the core height is constant and phase matching is achieved by changing the core width. In other words, if the phase matching is satisfied only by the core width, the core can be formed by a single etching process, and the manufacturing can be simplified.
<実施例1>
Hereinafter, the present invention will be specifically described with reference to examples.

In this example, the conversion efficiency in the mode conversion of TE 0 and TE 1 was simulated. The following simulation is based on the finite element method (FEM).

<Comparative Example 1>
For comparison, as shown in FIG. 14, the
In the
In Example 1 and Comparative Example 1, it is considered that TE 0 of the input side core is coupled to TE 1 of the output side core. In addition, if the core width is too small for manufacturing, the reproducibility at the time of manufacturing deteriorates. Therefore, the width of the input side core, which is the narrower core, is fixed.
Here, the width of the input side core is set to 400 nm in both Example 1 and Comparative Example 1. The core spacing was 350 nm, and the radius Rb of the
The coupling coefficient χ at this time is χ ′ = 0.0286 [rad / μm] in the first embodiment and χ = 0.0315 [rad / μm] in the first comparative example. In both cases, Δ ′ <χ ′ (Δ <χ) is satisfied, so that the phase matching condition is satisfied.
To see how Δ in the straight waveguide (Comparative Example 1) and Δ ′ in the bending waveguide (Example 1) change with respect to the wavelength, the absolute values of Δ and Δ ′ with respect to the wavelength are examined. It was. The results are shown in FIG.
From this figure, it can be seen that Δ ′ is suppressed to be lower with respect to the wavelength in Example 1 (bending waveguide).
This is because, as described above, the effective refractive index change amount due to the wavelength of the different mode is compensated by multiplying the effective refractive index of the mode guided through the
Based on the above, FIG. 5 shows the result of calculating the coupling efficiency with respect to the wavelength. L and R a θ which are the lengths of the coupling portions are set to lengths (referred to as coupling lengths) in which the term of sin (•) 2 in Equations (1) and (8) is 1, and the values are In the straight waveguide (Comparative Example 1), L = 49.8 μm, and in the bent waveguide (Example 1), R a θ = 54.9 μm.
From this figure, in the bent waveguide (Example 1), Δ ′ (Δ) maintains a low value in a wide wavelength band (see FIG. 4), and thus high coupling efficiency is maintained in a wide wavelength band. I understand that.
