Description
The present invention relates to a suspension substrate that can suppress deterioration of a terminal portion due to residual chemicals and further suppress deterioration of the terminal portion over time during use.
In recent years, due to the spread of the Internet and the like, there has been a demand for an increase in the amount of information processing of personal computers and an increase in information processing speed, and along with this, the capacity of hard disk drives (HDD) incorporated in personal computers has increased. Increasing information transmission speed is required.
A suspension substrate (flexure) used in an HDD is usually formed at one end portion, formed at a recording / reproducing element mounting area for mounting a recording / reproducing element such as a magnetic head slider, and at the other end portion. It has an external circuit board connection area for connecting to the external circuit board, and a wiring layer for connecting the recording / reproducing element mounting area and the external circuit board connection area.
The suspension substrate usually has a basic structure in which a metal support substrate (for example, stainless steel), an insulating layer (for example, polyimide resin), and a wiring layer (for example, copper) are laminated in this order. Furthermore, a metal thin film portion usually exists between the insulating layer and the wiring layer. This metal thin film portion is, for example, a seed layer for forming a wiring layer, and is formed by removing unnecessary portions of the metal thin film simultaneously with or after the formation of the wiring layer from the viewpoint of ensuring insulation. In addition, the wiring layer has a terminal portion for connection with, for example, a recording / reproducing element, and metal plating is formed on the surface of the terminal portion from the viewpoint of improving connection reliability.
For example, in
As shown in FIG. 1C of

Furthermore, since the metal plating portion is formed so as to be in contact with at least one of the top surface of the pedestal portion and the side surface of the pedestal portion, deterioration of the terminal portion over time during use can be suppressed.

In the suspension substrate of the present invention, the insulating layer has a pedestal portion that supports the terminal portion of the wiring layer and a pedestal adjacent portion that is thinner than the pedestal portion. Furthermore, a metal plating part is formed on the surface of the terminal part, and the metal plating part is formed so as to be in contact with at least one of the top surface of the base part and the side surface of the base part.
Here, as shown in FIG. 3 (b), the difference in thickness of the top surface X 1 and the top surface X 3 of the base
As an example of the shape of the base part in this invention, the shape which the edge part of the top surface of a base part protrudes rather than the edge part of a terminal part can be mentioned. This shape is the first embodiment of the shape of the pedestal. Specifically, as shown in FIG. 5 (a), the
The shape of the metal plating part in a 1st embodiment will not be specifically limited if it is a shape which contact | connects the top face of a base part. As an example of the shape of the metal plating section in the first embodiment, as shown in FIG. 5 (a), a
As another example of the shape of the metal plating section in the first embodiment, as shown in FIG. 5 (b), a
In addition, as another example of the shape of the pedestal portion in the present invention, a shape in which the end portion of the top surface of the pedestal portion is coincident with the end portion of the terminal portion can be mentioned. This shape is the second embodiment of the shape of the pedestal. Specifically, as shown in FIG. 6, the
The shape of the metal plating section in the second embodiment, typically, as shown in FIG. 6, the
As another example of the shape of the pedestal portion in the present invention, a shape having an intermediate surface between the top surface of the pedestal adjacent portion and the top surface of the pedestal portion in the thickness direction can be exemplified. This shape is the third embodiment of the shape of the pedestal. Specifically, having as illustrated in FIG. 7 (a), in the thickness direction, the top surface X 3 of the base
The shape of the metal plating part in a 3rd embodiment will not be specifically limited if it is a shape which contact | connects the side surface of a base part. As an example of the shape of the metal plating part in the third embodiment, as shown in FIG. 7A, the
As another example of the shape of the metal plating part in the third embodiment, as shown in FIG. 7B, the
Moreover, as for the board | substrate for suspensions of this invention, as shown, for example in FIG. 8, it is preferable that the surface of the
Further, in the suspension substrate of the present invention, for example, as shown in FIG. 9, in the
As shown in FIG. 9, when the distance between the
As shown in FIG. 9, when the width of the metal

According to the present invention, by using the above-described suspension, a suspension with an element having excellent durability can be obtained.
The suspension with an element of the present invention includes at least a suspension and a recording / reproducing element. The actuator element usually corresponds to a microactuator or a millimeter actuator. Examples of the actuator element include a piezo element. As the piezo element, for example, one made of PZT can be cited. By using the expansion / contraction response of the piezo element, positioning can be performed in submicron units. In addition, the piezoelectric element has advantages such as high energy efficiency, large load resistance, fast response, no wear deterioration, and no magnetic field. A pedestal part forming step for forming a pedestal part for supporting the pedestal part and a pedestal adjacent part having a thickness smaller than that of the pedestal part, and the metal plating part includes the top surface of the pedestal part and the pedestal. It forms so that it may contact | connect at least one of the side surfaces of a part.
FIG. 13 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing an example of a method for manufacturing a suspension substrate according to the present invention. In FIG. 13, first, an
According to the present invention, by providing the pedestal portion, it is possible to suppress deterioration of the terminal portion due to the remaining chemical solution.
1. Metal plating part formation process The metal plating part formation process in this invention is a process of forming a metal plating part in the surface of the terminal part of the said wiring layer.
Specific examples of the method for forming the metal plating portion include a plating method, and an electrolytic plating method is particularly preferable. For example, examples of the electrolytic Ni plating bath include a watt bath and a sulfamic acid bath. Examples of the electrolytic Au plating bath include a gold cyanide bath and an acidic gold bath.
2. Pedestal portion forming step The pedestal portion forming step in the present invention is a step of forming, on the insulating layer, a pedestal portion that supports the terminal portion of the wiring layer and a pedestal adjacent portion that is thinner than the pedestal portion. . Usually, the pedestal adjacent part is formed by etching the insulating layer around the position to be the pedestal part.
As a method for etching the insulating layer, for example, dry etching is preferable, and plasma etching is more preferable. This is because highly anisotropic etching is possible. Examples of the reactive gas used for plasma etching include NF 3 and CF 4 . In the present invention, wet etching may be used as a method for etching the insulating layer.
3. Suspension Substrate Manufacturing Method The suspension substrate manufacturing method of the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it has the above-described metal plating portion forming step and pedestal portion forming step. Hereinafter, as a specific example, a method for manufacturing a suspension substrate having the structure described in FIGS. 5A, 6, 7 A, and 8 will be described with reference to FIGS. 14 to 18.

Next, wet etching is performed on the metal
