Description
The present invention relates to a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device and a manufacturing technique thereof.
Liquid crystal display devices are widely used as information display units in various electronic devices. For example, a segment display type liquid crystal display device is often used as an information display unit for indicating an operation state of an air conditioner or the like in a vehicle because of a demand for cost reduction. A segment display type liquid crystal display device includes a pixel unit configured in a desired shape (for example, a mark imitating a human being, a mark indicating an air flow, a mark indicating a wind direction, etc.). Information display is performed by selectively lighting. In particular, since a high contrast can be easily realized, a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device is often used.
As a prior example of a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device, Japanese Patent Laying-Open No. 2010-39281 (Patent Document 1) discloses a liquid crystal layer having a thickness direction retardation value in a range of 500 nm to 1600 nm (a range exceeding a normal range). In combination with a uniaxial retardation plate (viewing angle compensation plate) having negative refractive index anisotropy, the on-transmission at the time of high duty driving is increased and the contrast and viewing angle are improved. A liquid crystal display device is disclosed.
By the way, in the above-described liquid crystal display device, when the retardation value in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer is set larger, it is difficult to maintain the viewing angle characteristics unless the compensation amount of the viewing angle compensator is increased accordingly. . However, since there is a limit to the amount of compensation that a single viewing angle compensator can provide, it is necessary to use a plurality of viewing angle compensators in order to maintain viewing angle characteristics. This disadvantageously increases the cost of the liquid crystal display device.
Further, if the phase difference value is excessively increased, the transmittance increases even in the pixel portion that is controlled in the dark state (off state) particularly when the liquid crystal display device is observed from the lateral direction (oblique direction). There is also a disadvantage that the so-called off-seg appearance becomes noticeable. This is because in the case of passive driving, a non-selection voltage is also applied to the pixel portion that is controlled to be in an off state, so that a minute alignment change occurs in the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer. That is, if the retardation value is too large, even if the orientation change of the liquid crystal molecules is small, it will appear as a larger transmittance change than when the retardation value is small. Such off-seg appearance also causes a decrease in contrast. In particular, when the dot matrix display unit and the segment display unit are mixed, the off-seg appearance becomes noticeable in the segment display unit. Further, such off-seg appearance becomes more prominent when the pretilt angle is set low.

Next, a preferable example of the manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display device of the present embodiment will be described. FIG. 2 is a flowchart for explaining an example of a manufacturing method of the liquid crystal display device shown in FIG. FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram of a rubbing apparatus used in a process of rubbing the alignment film.
First, the
Next, an alignment film material having a desired pattern is applied to each substrate by a flexographic printing method (FIG. 2: step S12), and this is temporarily fired in a clean oven at 90 ° C. for about 5 minutes, and further 180 The main baking is performed at a temperature of 280 ° C. to 280 ° C. for 30 to 60 minutes (FIG. 2: Step S13). The magnitude of the pretilt angle that can be imparted to the liquid crystal layer by the alignment film varies depending on the firing temperature at this time. In this embodiment, a polyimide film is used as the alignment film. This polyimide film is obtained by baking and imidizing polyamic acid. Since an alkyl group and a hydrophobic structure are introduced into the alignment film material for the vertical alignment film, the higher the firing temperature, the higher the imidization rate, the more rigid the alkyl group in the side chain, and the less the pretilt angle. It becomes a state. That is, a high pretilt angle tends to be stably developed even under a rubbing condition in which the rubbing strength is increased to some extent. Specifically, the imidation rate is desirably 50% or more. An example of the pretilt angle and the imidization rate of the alignment film used in the present embodiment under the same rubbing conditions is 38%, and the pretilt angle at this time is 89.8. The imidation rate when firing at 200 ° C. is 50%, the pretilt angle at this time is 89.9 °, and the imidation rate when firing at 230 ° C. is 90%, and the pretilt angle at this time Is 89.95 °.

Next, a rubbing process which is one of the alignment processes is performed on the alignment film (FIG. 2: step S14). In the present embodiment, the rubbing process is performed on both the
Here, the parameters of the rubbing process will be described with reference to FIG. As shown in FIG. 3A, a general rubbing apparatus includes a

As an example, a liquid crystal display device including both a dot matrix display unit and a segment display unit was manufactured under the following conditions. A pair of substrates made of soda lime glass was prepared, and electrodes having shapes corresponding to the dot matrix display portion and the segment display portion were formed on one surface of each. Specifically, an indium tin oxide film (ITO film) was formed on a substrate and patterned by a photolithography technique. Further, an insulating film (SiO 2 film) was formed on one surface of each substrate.
Further, a polyimide alignment film material for a vertical alignment film was formed on one surface of each substrate by flexographic printing and baked at 200 ° C., thereby forming an alignment film on one surface of each substrate. FIG. 4 is an enlarged view showing the characteristics in the vicinity of the threshold of the voltage-transmittance characteristics example at the time of eyepoint measurement. The measurement point A shown in FIG. 4 corresponds to the above-described example (Δn · d = 840 nm), and the measurement point B corresponds to Comparative Example 2 (Δn · d = 960 nm). As shown in FIG. 4, in the liquid crystal display device of Comparative Example 2 having a larger Δn · d, the rise in the vicinity of the threshold value (response start voltage) is gentle, so that the transmittance is higher even at the off voltage. For this reason, it is visually recognized as an off-seg appearance. On the other hand, in the liquid crystal display device of the embodiment, the rise in the vicinity of the threshold is steep and the transmittance at the off voltage is low, so that the off-seg appearance does not occur. In addition, what was shown here is an example, and other Δn · d values were also examined in more detail by computer simulation using a commercially available LCD simulator. As described below, 800 to 900 nm is preferable. It has been confirmed.
FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating a numerical example by simulation of the retardation dependence of the steepness of the liquid crystal display device. FIG. 6 is a graph showing the relationship between the retardation and steepness shown in FIG. 5 by curve approximation. Here, the refractive index anisotropy Δn is fixed at 0.08, the retardation Δn · d is changed by varying the cell thickness d, and other cell conditions are the same as those shown in Example 1. Same conditions. Here, the steepness gamma is the ratio of the applied voltage V 10 between the transmittance of 90% applied voltage V 90 at the time when the transmittance of 10% of the liquid crystal display device is expressed as γ = V 90 / V 10. By the way, in general, in a multiplex-driven liquid crystal display device, the optimum value of the applied voltage V ON of the display portion and the applied voltage V OFF of the non-display portion is determined by the number of time divisions N, and at the optimum bias drive where the contrast becomes maximum The effective voltage ratio V OFF / V ON at becomes smaller as the time division number N becomes higher. For example, in the case of driving with a 1/40 duty (that is, when N = 40) and an optimum bias, the value of the effective voltage ratio V OFF / V ON is 1.17. Therefore, in order to make the liquid crystal display device have a good display quality in the multiplex drive, it is necessary to make the value of the steepness γ smaller than the value of the effective voltage ratio V OFF / V ON .
Specifically, in the case of multiplex driving with 1/40 duty and optimum bias, the steepness γ needs to be 1.17 or less. Looking at the simulation result, the steepness γ is 1.17 when the retardation is about 725 nm as shown by the dotted line in FIG. Therefore, the retardation value is preferably at least 725 nm. Furthermore, it can be said that the retardation value is preferably 800 nm or more in consideration of a cell thickness margin at the time of manufacturing the liquid crystal display device.
FIG. 7 is a diagram illustrating a numerical example by simulation of the retardation dependency of the off-seg appearance of the liquid crystal display device. FIG. 8 is a graph showing the relationship between the retardation and contrast shown in FIG. 7 by curve approximation. Here, when the best viewing direction of the liquid crystal display device is the 12 o'clock direction, the voltage is such that the on-transmittance is the same when observed from a direction inclined 30 ° in the 3 o'clock direction from the normal of the display surface. The transmittance (OFF transmittance) of the non-display portion (off-segment) when driven was obtained, and based on this, the contrast (CR), which is the ratio with the transmittance of the display portion, was obtained. In addition, the OFF transmittance value when the retardation was 800 nm was set to 1, and the “off-seg appearance ratio”, which was a value obtained by standardizing the OFF transmittance values in other retardations, was also obtained. As can be seen from FIGS. 7 and 8, it can be seen that the off-seg appearance ratio when observed from the horizontal direction increases as the retardation increases. It can be seen that the contrast decreases as the retardation increases. Here, as shown in FIG. 8, when the retardation is about 930 nm, the contrast value is less than 5, and the contrast is significantly reduced. Therefore, the retardation value is preferably at least 930 nm or less. Furthermore, it can be said that the retardation value is preferably 900 nm or less in consideration of the cell thickness margin at the time of manufacturing the liquid crystal display device.
As described above, according to the present embodiment and examples, a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device having high contrast and good viewing angle characteristics even when driven at a high duty, and a manufacturing technique thereof are provided.
