Description
The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for opening a reinforcing fiber such as a carbon fiber used for a fiber reinforced resin.
The use of fiber reinforced resin is expanding as an extremely lightweight and high strength material. Examples of the reinforcing fiber include those made of glass, carbon, aramid, alumina, or boron. Among these, the application of carbon fiber to aircraft and automobiles is rapidly expanding.
As an example, the fiber reinforced resin can be produced by forming a web of reinforcing fibers into a desired shape, then impregnating the web with an uncured polymer, and curing the polymer. Alternatively, a so-called prepreg in which a web of reinforcing fibers or a fiber bundle aligned in one direction is impregnated with a polymer in advance may be used.
In order to improve the properties of fiber reinforced resins or expand applications, thinner and wider prepregs are desired. In view of this, a technique has been sought for opening the yarn, which is a bundle of reinforcing fibers, so that the fiber bundle is expanded in the width direction. Patent Documents 1 and 2 disclose related techniques.
Several opening techniques are known in clothing yarns. Although the present inventors tried to apply these opening techniques to reinforcing fibers such as carbon fibers, the opening has not reached a satisfactory level. There is a demand for further improvement in the degree of opening.

A fiber device.
According to the second aspect of the present invention, a method for opening a reinforcing fiber is a method in which a plurality of yarns each made of the reinforcing fiber are sent in parallel from a creel stand, and superheated steam is generated by a superheated steam generator, The yarn is exposed to the superheated steam in a chamber connected to the superheated steam generator, and each of the yarns pretreated with the superheated steam is opened.
There is provided a fiber opening device capable of obtaining a reinforcing fiber bundle having a high fiber opening degree.
An embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The opening device according to the present embodiment is preferably used by being incorporated into a prepreg manufacturing device. The opening device is used for opening reinforcing fibers such as carbon fibers, but can also be used for reinforcing fibers other than carbon fibers. In the opening device, superheated steam is used for opening. In this specification and the appended claims, superheated steam means steam heated above its boiling point, as in the general sense.
Referring to FIG. 1, a prepreg manufacturing apparatus 1 is generally arranged at a creel stand 3 that supplies a plurality of yarns Y, a fiber opening unit 5 that opens each of the supplied yarns Y, and a downstream side thereof. The fiber bundle S includes a coupling portion 7 that couples the fiber bundle S with an uncured polymer to produce the prepreg P, and a winder 9 that is disposed on the downstream side of the fiber bundle S and winds the prepreg P.
As the creel stand 3, a known one that has a plurality of bobbins and can supply a plurality of yarns Y can be used. Preferably, a bobbin is supported horizontally so as not to twist the yarn Y, and an appropriate tension can be applied to the yarn Y so as not to loosen. The yarns Y are drawn out from the plurality of bobbins, arranged in parallel to form a surface, and supplied to the fiber opening unit 5.
Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3 in combination with FIG. 1, the fiber opening unit 5 includes a
Referring mainly to FIG. 2, the
The
The
The
As the
A
When normal water W passes through the
As described above, the temperature of the superheated steam SV is equal to or higher than the boiling point. From the viewpoint of the efficiency of fiber opening, the temperature is preferably higher, for example, an appropriate temperature exceeding 200 ° C., more preferably exceeding 470 ° C. However, from the viewpoint of energy efficiency, the lower one is preferable, and for example, the temperature is 700 ° C. or lower.
In this example, the heating is performed in two stages using the
Although the water W is normal water which can be obtained industrially, it may contain an appropriate additive. Alternatively, an appropriate volatile liquid may be used in place of the water W.
The
The opening unit 5 is preferably provided with an
Further, an appropriate guide may be provided immediately before the
Referring to FIGS. 5 and 6 in combination with FIG. 1, the
The

Each of the

Each bar is a fixed bar that does not rotate about its axis, but one or a few of these bars may be rotatable about its axis.
Preferably, in order to adjust the contact pressure or contact area, the plurality of
Moreover, you may provide a vibration apparatus in one or more selected from several bar |

Referring to FIG. 7 in combination with FIG. 1, the coupling portion 7 is provided on the downstream side of the spread portion 5. The coupling unit 7 is roughly a
The uncured polymer E contains a precursor of a thermosetting resin that is selected depending on the application of the prepreg, such as an epoxy resin, a phenol resin, or a polyimide resin. The uncured polymer E is preferably provided with a release paper on one side to protect the surface. Further, an appropriate resin film, for example, a polyethylene film, may be adhered to the opposite surface (the surface to be in close contact with the fiber bundle S). The uncured polymer E is provided in a form wound in a roll shape, and is supplied from the upper and
The

When release paper is stuck to the polymer E, the peeling
In order to protect the surface of the prepreg P, an appropriate film, for example, a polyethylene film may be affixed again. In the example of FIG. 1,
A winder 9 is provided on the downstream side. The winder 9 winds the prepreg P into a roll.
Means for preventing loosening of the yarn Y, such as a tension roller, a dancer roller, and a friction bar, may be provided at one or more appropriate locations from the creel stand 3 to the winder 9.
Referring to FIGS. 1 to 7, according to the present embodiment, the prepreg manufacturing method including the fiber opening process is as follows.
A plurality of yarns Y each made of reinforcing fibers are sent out in parallel from the creel stand 3. In parallel, the superheated steam SV is generated by the
The process in the
Next, the uncured polymer E is brought into close contact with the fiber bundle S by the
The prepreg P is cooled by the cooling
According to this embodiment, the opened yarn S is a bundle S of reinforcing fibers substantially aligned in one direction. Compared to the yarn Y before being opened, the width magnification of the opened yarn S reaches about 20. Since the width after opening is several times according to the prior art, this embodiment is significantly superior in the degree of opening.
The reason why such a high degree of opening is obtained is not necessarily clear, but substances such as oil on the surface of the reinforcing fiber are related. That is, a small amount of silicone oil, latex, or the like is applied to the reinforcing fiber for the purpose of preventing damage to the surface thereof. These substances are thought to inhibit the movement of the reinforcing fibers and thus prevent the fiber opening. Exposure of the yarn to superheated steam removes these materials and allows the reinforcing fibers to move more freely, thus promoting fiber opening.
A method such as using a solvent can be easily thought of to remove the oil, but a long treatment is required to completely remove the oil with the solvent, and a longer time is required for drying. It is not appropriate for inline processing. In that respect, superheated steam completely removes oil in a very short time, does not require drying, and is suitable for performing in-line in the prepreg manufacturing process.
Since the superheated steam does not contain reactive gas molecules such as oxygen even though it is high temperature, it does not chemically modify substances such as oil and fix them to the reinforcing fibers. Therefore, removal of substances such as oil is sufficient, the surface of the reinforcing fiber becomes clean and active, and the bonding property between the reinforcing fiber and the uncured polymer is good. When the state after the polymer is cured is optically observed, no sudden change is observed in the refractive index of the resin even in the vicinity of the reinforcing fiber, and therefore it can be estimated that the bond between the fiber and the polymer is good. That is, according to this embodiment, a prepreg suitable for the production of a fiber reinforced resin can be obtained.
Although the present invention has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, the present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiments. Based on the above disclosure, a person having ordinary skill in the art can implement the present invention by modifying or modifying the embodiment.
