Description
本出願は、2005年3月31日に仮特許出願された米国特許出願第60/666,929号の本出願である。
コンタクトレンズは、視力を改善するために1950年代から商業的に利用されている。当初のコンタクトレンズは、ガラスおよび硬質プラスチックといった硬質材料で製造された。これらのレンズは、人間がレンズの物理的性質を検査することを含む工程により生産された。その後、技術分野の進歩に伴って、ハイドロゲル(hydrogel)を使用したソフトコンタクトレンズが登場し、今日、大変広く普及している。ハイドロゲルは、水和された架橋ポリマー系で、水を含有し平衡状態を保つ。ハイドロゲルは、典型的には、酸素透過性および生体適合性を有し、生物医学機器(biomedical devices)の製造材料として、特にコンタクトレンズまたは眼内レンズの製造材料として好まれる。これらのレンズは、その快適性および普及率から、今では自動工程により大規模生産されており、その工程において、コンタクトレンズの自動検査が含まれている。レンズの画像を利用した、眼科用レンズの自動検査が公知である。米国特許第3,794,429号、同第3,807,867号、同第3,969,023号、同第3,988,068号、同第4,035,082号、同第5,500,732号、同第5,528,357号、同第5,574,554号、同第5,627,638号、同第5,633,504号、同第5,640,464号、同第5,717,781号、同第5,719,669号、同第5,745,230号、同第5,748,300号、同第5,801,822号、同第5,805,276号、同第5,812,254号、同第5,818,573号、同第5,828,446号、同第5,995,213号、同第6,047,082号、同第6,134,342号、同第6,154,274号、同第6,301,005号、同第6,633,377号、および同第6,822,016号、ならびに米国公開特許第2003/0112426号、同第2004/0042003号、同第2004/0008877号、同第2004/0004693号、および同第2003/0103201号を参照されたい。これらの特許文献は全て、全体が参照により本明細書に組み込まれている。自動レンズ検査システム(「ALIシステム」)は、亀裂、傷、穴、およびその他のソフトコンタクトレンズの端部の欠陥を、典型的にはレンズ1枚あたり30秒未満の速度で、迅速に特定するシステムであるため、参照されたい。これらのシステムの多くは、処理溶液(processing solutions)、充填溶液(packaging solutions)等の液体中で、レンズの検査を行う必要がある。場合によっては、ALIシステムが液体をコンタクトレンズと認識することがあり、特に、液体が、液体および検査対象のコンタクトレンズを収容するコンテナの表面を不均一に覆うか、またはその表面で液体が泡立つ場合に、このような事態が発生する。検査工程が迅速に進むため、ALIシステムは、レンズが液滴に封入されている場合に、欠陥のないレンズをしばしば誤認する。特定のメカニズムに拘束される意図はないものの、システムは、液滴の投影を欠陥と混同すると考えられる。結果的に、製品の浪費が生じる。ALIシステムが、コンタクトレンズの実際の欠陥とレンズの周りの液体との混同を低減する方法が開発されれば、有益である。この必要性は、本発明によって対処される。
本発明は、コンテナ内の眼科用レンズ(ophthalmic lens)を検査する方法を含む。ここで眼科用レンズは、液体に浸されている。前述の方法は、
液体またはレンズをコンテナに加える前に、コンテナ内面を適切な電力の電荷で十分な時間処理する工程、
液体およびレンズをコンテナに加える工程、ならびに、
眼科用レンズを検査する工程を含み、これらの工程から成り、これらの工程から本質的に成る。
セノフィルコンA コンタクトレンズを、米国特許第6,822,016号の実施例1に記載された通りに作製した。タンテック社(Tantec)製造の放電装置の電極を、ブリスターパッケージのいくつかのボウル部分上に置いた(米国特許第5,467,868号を参照されたい)。放電ユニットは、 250W (22kV) の電荷を放電し、電荷を16のパッケージに分配して、各パッケージが1秒間に15.6Wを受電できるようにした。いくつかのボウル部分は、未処理のままとした。レンズを、処理済および未処理のボウル部分へ機械的に送り、イオン交換水(1 ,000μL)をボウル部分に加えた。レンズを目視により評価し、物理的な外観を判定した。未処理のボウル部分の外観は、図1が示す通りであった。図1は、イオン交換水を未処理のボウル部分10に加えると、水がレンズ40の周りに水滴30を形成する状態を示す。処理済のボウル部分を、図2に示す。図2は、ボウル部分10に加えた水20がボウル部分全体に広がり、レンズの周りに水滴30を形成していない状態を示す。水滴に封入されたコンタクトレンズは、米国特許第5,578,331号、および2003年2月21日出願の米国特許出願第10/371,712号の方法により検査すると、しばしば損傷したレンズと認識される。

- 液体に浸されている眼科用レンズを検査する方法であって、
ボウルを有するブリスターパッケージを提供することと、
前記ボウルの内面を、ある電力の電荷である時間処理することと、
ボウルに前記液体および前記眼科用レンズを加えることと、
