Unlike the conventional example, the present invention is characterized in that an optical fiber having the same function is used instead of a quarter-wave plate using a birefringent crystal. The first effect of the present invention is that the light quantity loss due to the interface that reflects and diffuses can be reduced by reducing the part of the optical system at the probe tip that propagates the light in the space. The second effect is that the work involving precise alignment of the minute quarter-wave plate and the optical axis replacement is replaced with the fusion work of the optical fiber, which is a relatively large component. A third effect is that a low-cost optical fiber can be used instead of a high-cost quarter-wave plate. The fourth effect is that, instead of the quarter-wave plate, there is a function capable of canceling out the influence of the deviation of the mounting angle of the optical fiber having the same action at the optical fiber connection part of the probe part. The fifth effect is that a mechanically stable mechanism can be realized by using a fusion splice with all the main optical components being optical fibers.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below in detail with reference to the drawings. In the following description, devices having the same function or similar functions are denoted by the same reference numerals unless there is a special reason.
A first configuration example of the electric field measuring apparatus having the most basic configuration of the present invention is shown in FIG. A block diagram is shown in FIG. In FIG. 1A, the first polarized light from the
As the optical path turning means 20, a half mirror, a circulator, an optical path coupler, or the like shown in FIG. 2 can be used. The second
FIG. 1B is a schematic diagram showing a third polarization maintaining optical fiber and an electro-optic crystal connected by a collimator. Optical path turning means 20 The above-mentioned optical connection can be realized by fusion or by using an adhesive.
As the polarization maintaining optical fiber, for example, there is a PANDA fiber, and this cross-sectional structure is shown in FIG. This uses uniaxial birefringence induced in the core by the stress applying portions N1 and N2. In general, there are two polarization planes of light propagating through the polarization maintaining optical fiber core, as shown in FIG. 6, assuming that the direction connecting the pair of stress applying portions N1 and N2 is the X direction and the direction orthogonal thereto is the Y direction. (X, Y), which are the slow axis and the fast axis, respectively. The length at which the phase difference of light propagating through the slow axis and the fast axis is 2π radians is called the beat length. This beat length is known to be approximately 1 to 5 mm.
FIG. 6A shows the state of the electric field vectors Px and Py of the light immediately after the linearly polarized light whose polarization direction is 3 / 4π radians with respect to the slow axis is incident on the polarization maintaining optical fiber. Since the core through which light propagates has a uniaxial birefringence, polarization states such as linearly polarized light, elliptically polarized light, circularly polarized light, right-shifted light, and left-shifted light periodically appear in the optical fiber according to the propagation distance. If the difference in the refractive index of the core is Δn, the wavelength of the light is λ, and the length of the optical fiber is L, between the two linearly polarized light components orthogonal to the vibration plane,
Δψ = (2π · Δn · L) / λ (radian),
Phase difference occurs. The length that the value of Δψ is exactly 2π radians is called the beat length. Further, an optical fiber having a length L such that π / 2 radians has polarization characteristics equivalent to a quarter-wave plate for light of this wavelength. Such an optical fiber piece will be referred to as a “quarter wavelength optical fiber”. In the present invention, the second polarization-maintaining fiber has this function. Fibers with a quarter-wavelength phase difference can be manufactured using ordinary polarization-maintaining optical fibers and fused to each other.
The length of the second polarization maintaining
The optical connection between the second polarization-maintaining
One end of the polarization-maintaining
The light reflected by the
The state of the first polarization and the second polarization at each position in the embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail. The first polarized light output from the light source is linearly polarized light and becomes incident light of the first polarization maintaining
Here, it is assumed that the first polarization-maintaining
At the output end of the second polarization-maintaining
In the EO crystal, phase modulation occurs in the direction along the fast axis / slow axis of the polarization maintaining
For the return light passing through the third polarization maintaining
In photoelectric conversion, light is received separately into a slow axis component and a fast axis component, and the output is differentially amplified. The received light energy is proportional to the square of the absolute value of each component of
The differential current ΔI between I Slow Axis and I Fast Axis is given by the following equation. If not differential, half of this current is measured.
For example, when φ = 0 radians, such as when the third polarization maintaining
In the above example, the polarization maintaining
In addition, the second polarization-maintaining
