Abstract
Description
本発明は、電気泳動表示装置、電気泳動表示装置の製造方法および電子機器に関するものである。 The present invention relates to an electrophoretic display device, an electrophoretic display device manufacturing method, and an electronic apparatus.
近年、携帯型の情報機器の発達が急である。そこで、低消費電力、薄型の表示装置の要望が増している。これらの要望に答えるため、いろいろな開発が試みられている。今まで液晶表示装置(液晶表示体)がその要望を満たしていた。
しかしながら、この液晶表示装置には、画面を見る角度や、反射光による文字の見づらさや、光源のちらつき等による視覚への負担が未だ十分に解決されていない。このため視覚への負担の少ない表示装置の研究が盛んに行われている。
In recent years, the development of portable information devices has been rapid. Thus, there is an increasing demand for low power consumption and thin display devices. Various developments have been attempted to meet these demands. Until now, liquid crystal display devices (liquid crystal display bodies) satisfied the demand.
However, in this liquid crystal display device, the visual burden due to the angle at which the screen is viewed, the difficulty in seeing characters due to reflected light, the flickering of the light source, etc. has not been sufficiently solved. For this reason, research on display devices with less visual burden has been actively conducted.
低消費電力、眼への負担軽減等の観点から反射表示装置が期待されている。その一つとして電気泳動表示装置(電気泳動表示体)が知られている。
この電気泳動表示装置の動作原理を図15に示す。この電気泳動表示装置920は、帯電した電気泳動粒子905と、色素が溶解された着色絶縁性液体(分散媒)906と、着色絶縁性液体906を介して対峙する一対の透明電極903を備える基板901とで構成されている。
Reflective display devices are expected from the viewpoints of low power consumption and reduction of the burden on the eyes. As one of them, an electrophoretic display device (electrophoretic display body) is known.
The operating principle of this electrophoretic display device is shown in FIG. The

The principle of a general
As an electrophoretic display device that solves this problem, an electrophoretic display device that uses two types of electrophoretic particles having different positive and negative colors (tones) and a colorless and transparent insulating liquid (for example, Patent Document 1 and Patent Document) 2) has been proposed.
However, in the electrophoretic display device described in JP-A-62-50886, since the pigment particles are used as the electrophoretic particles, the electrophoretic particles have irregular particle sizes, and are reliably dispersed in the insulating liquid. There are a problem that it cannot be performed and a problem that it is difficult to pulverize electrophoretic particles.
On the other hand, in the electrophoretic display device described in JP-A-8-510790, a surfactant is used for the purpose of imparting dispersibility and chargeability of the electrophoretic particles. There is a problem that the surfactants are entangled with each other, and as a result, electrophoresis of the electrophoretic particles in the insulating liquid becomes difficult.
In order to improve the aggregation of the two kinds of particles, a technique for treating the surface of one of the particles with a coupling agent is disclosed (for example, Patent Document 3).
However, the method described in

From this point of view, the polar group is preferably at least one of a hydroxyl group and an amino group, and particularly preferably an amino group.
以上のこと考慮した場合、前記樹脂としては、水酸基およびアミノ基のうちの少なくとも一方を極性基として有するアクリル系樹脂が好適である。
このようなアクリル系樹脂は、例えば、アクリル系樹脂に、極性基を有するアクリル系モノマーを共重合させて、極性基を導入することにより得ることができる。かかる方法によれば、極性基を有するアクリル系樹脂を、比較的容易かつ高収率で得ることができる。

Such an acrylic resin can be obtained, for example, by copolymerizing an acrylic resin having a polar group and introducing the polar group into the acrylic resin. According to this method, an acrylic resin having a polar group can be obtained relatively easily and with a high yield.
