水蒸気蒸留を行うことによって、月桃の葉１００ｋｇから約３０ｃｃの月桃精油（希釈していない完全成分のもの）を得ることができる。
月桃の葉の抽出物を得る方法として、水蒸気蒸留以外にも溶媒抽出や水抽出などを挙げることができる。
水蒸気蒸留で得られた月桃精油の成分例について、表２に示す。

（３．月桃精油を用いた木酢液の消臭方法について）
前述木酢液に前述の月桃精油を加えることによって、木酢液が有する独特の臭いを緩和することができる。
従来、ローズオイル等を用いて木酢液の消臭を行ったとしても、月日が経つと、再び木酢液が有する独特の臭いが生じた。しかし、月桃精油を用いて木酢液の消臭を行うと、それらの成分による相乗効果が発揮され、強力なマスキング効果によって月日が経ったとしても消臭効果が持続される。このような格別顕著な効果は、これまで得られていないものであった。
なお、木質成分の熱分解液（例えば前述の木酢液）、月桃の葉の成分（例えば前述の月桃精油）については、上記の内容に限定されるものではない。配合比としては、木酢液：月桃精油＝１〜２００：１の重量配合比で配合し、消臭するのが好ましい。

As a compounding ratio, it is preferable to mix and deodorize wood vinegar liquid: moon peach essential oil = 1-200: 1 by weight compounding ratio.

このような消臭方法を用いると、木酢液が有する独特の臭いが緩和され、消臭効果（臭いの緩和）は月日が経ったとしても持続される。これによって、今までに無い「消臭された木酢液」を得ることができる。
この消臭された木酢液に水を加え、消臭された希釈木酢液としても良い。また、事前に希釈した木酢液に月桃精油を添加し、消臭された希釈木酢液とすることもできる。
