【0001】
このように液晶装置をレンズとして活用することは、例えば“MODEL LIQUID CRYSTAL WAVEFRONT CORRECTORS”G.D.Love et al.,2nd International Workshop on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine,Durham,12−16th July,1999の予稿にもLCレンズとしてその記載がある。
【0030】
【0036】
式2 x ≦ D・y(65+D)
【0037】
【0040】
式3 fs(E+D)≦ Dy(s−f)
【0041】
【0093】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a wavefront control display device for outputting a stereoscopic image with a sense of depth, and an imaging reproduction method using such a wavefront control display device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Binocular parallax method, varifocal mirror method, and holography method are known as conventional techniques for reproducing this type of stereoscopic image. There are two types of binocular parallax methods: one that uses glasses and one that does not use glasses. In both cases, images for the left and right eyes are independently input to the left and right eyes, and the three-dimensional effect is achieved by the physiological functions of the human brain. It will cause. As a method using glasses, there are a red / blue filter method, a polarization filter method, and a time-division shutter method. The red / blue filter method puts red and blue filters on the left and right eye parts of the glasses and displays the left and right eye images in red and blue, respectively. However, colorization is difficult.
[0003]
In the polarizing filter method, polarizing filters in different directions are attached to the left and right eye parts of the glasses, and correspondingly, polarizing filters are attached to the two CRTs, and images for the left and right eyes are displayed on each of the two CRTs. To obtain a three-dimensional effect. In addition, the time-division shutter method displays images for the left and right eyes in odd and even frames of interlaced image display, and the left and right images of the glasses are opened and closed in synchronization with frame switching to make the left and right images independent. Input to each eye to obtain a stereoscopic effect.
[0004]
Both types can display a full-color moving image, but there is a trouble of wearing spectacles as a common disadvantage of the method using glasses. In addition, when considering application to a person-to-person service such as a stereoscopic TV conference and a stereoscopic TV telephone, there is a drawback in that each person feels unnaturalness wearing glasses.
[0005]
As a method that does not use glasses in the binocular parallax method, there is a method that uses a lenticular lens. In the case of using this lenticular lens, the left and right eye images are independently input to the left and right eyes using a large number of kamaboko-shaped convex lenses arranged side by side, but by moving the head position slightly, There is a drawback that the discontinuity of the image is felt or the stereoscopic effect cannot be obtained. In the varifocal mirror method, the focus of the variable focus mirror is changed at a high frequency in the video system, imaging is performed in this state, the focus is changed in synchronization with the change of the focus of the imaging system in the reproduction system, and this is observed. Since the in-focus plane changes at high speed in the depth direction, a stereoscopic image can be seen. The disadvantages of this method are that the in-focus surface and the non-in-focus surface are displayed in an overlapping manner, so that the image is not clear and the apparatus configuration of the optical system becomes large.
[0006]
The holography method divides the laser beam into two parts and irradiates one of the objects on the object, uses the other as reference light, records interference fringes with the diffracted light of the object on a hologram, and irradiates the reference light in the reproduction system By doing so, a three-dimensional image is obtained. Although this holography method has high materiality, it is difficult to perform color moving image and real-time recording, and the subject is a natural object and cannot be recorded if it is large.
[0007]
Further, as this type of stereoscopic image output apparatus, for example, an apparatus described in Japanese Patent No. 2585614 is known, and in this apparatus, a variable focus convex lens for controlling the focal length of light from the light emitting element is provided for each light emitting element. The variable focus convex lens is configured to be controlled by distance information that is disposed in front and transmitted together with color information. As another stereoscopic image output device, for example, a display device described in JP-A-5-142511 is known, and in this display device, for each dot consisting of at least one pixel forming a flat display, The structure is such that a minute lens is provided in front of each dot. Furthermore, in the three-dimensional display device described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2000-261833, a two-dimensional color display unit in which light emitting elements are arranged vertically and horizontally, and a variable focus lens disposed at a position corresponding to each light emitting element are provided. A three-dimensional image is displayed in combination.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In each stereoscopic image display device such as the stereoscopic image output device described in Japanese Patent No. 2585614, the display device described in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 5-142511, and the three-dimensional display device described in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2000-261833. The light from the light emitting element or the like is controlled for each pixel or each element to control a variable focus lens or the like, and the image forming position is changed to realize stereoscopic viewing.
[0009]
However, in each of these stereoscopic image display devices, there is a problem that it is not easy to take binocular parallax because light from a light emitting element or the like is controlled for each pixel or element. In general, binocular parallax can be obtained by the simultaneous entry of light rays on both sides, but with a small aperture pupil such as a microlens, it is difficult to make light rays incident on both eyes at the same time. The maximum pop-out distance of the image that creates the image will also be reduced. Furthermore, in the case of increasing the definition of an image, the size of each pixel itself is also reduced, but the space between adjacent pixels is also reduced at the same time, and there is a space for driving a minute variable focus lens for each pixel. It will be too narrow. For this reason, there are restrictions on the electrodes for controlling the variable focus lens and the like, and there is a practical limit to increasing the definition of images.
[0010]
Accordingly, in view of the above technical problems, the present invention provides a display device that can easily take binocular parallax that performs a main function in stereoscopic viewing of an image and contributes to high definition of the image and its display. An object of the present invention is to provide an imaging reproduction method suitable for an apparatus.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-described problem, the wavefront control type display device of the present invention is arranged to display a two-dimensional image display unit configured by arranging a plurality of light emitting pixels in a two-dimensional manner, and facing the two-dimensional image display unit. Based on depth information about image information to be A plurality of light emitting pixels among the light emitting pixels. A wavefront control unit that scans a wavefront control region that simultaneously controls the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit corresponding to the light emission region; The focal length of the wavefront control region is f, the distance between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit is s, the diameter of the wavefront control region is D, the distance between both eyes is E, When the distance between the viewer of the display device and the display device is y, the expression fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f) is satisfied. It is characterized by that.
[0012]
In the wavefront control type display device, the wavefront control unit can have a liquid crystal lens structure. As such a liquid crystal lens structure, micro liquid crystal cells are arranged in a matrix and the refractive index of the micro liquid crystal cell is changed. It may be a structure. In the present invention, the wavefront control region of the wavefront control unit can be driven in a line sequential manner or a dot sequential manner.
[0013]
According to the wavefront control type display device of the present invention, a display wavefront based on image information is generated by the two-dimensional image display unit, and the display wavefront is controlled by the wavefront control unit. The wavefront control unit of the wavefront control type display device of the present invention is: A plurality of light emitting pixels among the light emitting pixels. It operates to scan the wavefront control area corresponding to the light emitting area. The wavefront control region is a region that controls a part of the display wavefront at the same time, but corresponds to the light emitting region of a plurality of light emitting pixels, and therefore controls a region wider than the region per light emitting pixel. The When the expression fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f) is satisfied, binocular parallax can be obtained, and an image in which a sense of depth can be obtained by the minute parallax between both eyes is provided. As for the wavefront control method, for example, when using a required lens, the refractive index and the curvature are changed to move the focal position of the lens, or the lens position is moved to change the relative distance from the two-dimensional image display unit. For example, when a liquid crystal lens is used, wavefront control can be performed by changing the applied voltage, and scanning is also possible. When moving the focal length of the lens, for example, when the imaging position is controlled to the front of the display device, the image is projected so that there is a light emitting pixel on the front side, and conversely the imaging position is behind the display device. When this is controlled, the image is projected so that there is a light emitting pixel on the back side.
[0018]
The present invention also relates to an imaging / reproducing method, and the imaging / reproducing method of the present invention includes: A two-dimensional image display unit configured by arranging a plurality of light-emitting pixels in a two-dimensional manner, and a plurality of the light-emitting pixels based on depth information about image information to be arranged and displayed facing the two-dimensional image display unit A wavefront control unit that scans a wavefront control region that simultaneously controls the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit corresponding to the light emitting region of each light emitting pixel, and the focal length of the wavefront control region is f, The distance between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit is s, the diameter of the wavefront control region is D, the distance between both eyes is E, and the distance between the person viewing the display device and the display device is In the imaging reproduction method using the wavefront control type display device satisfying the expression fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f), Information on the distance to the subject is signaled along with the image information about the subject By the wavefront control type display device, An image pop-out distance corresponding to a value of the distance information is calculated together with the image information, and wavefront control is performed according to the calculated image pop-out distance.
[0019]
In the imaging reproduction method of the present invention, in order to display a three-dimensional image, not only image information about the subject but also distance information to the subject is recorded in advance at the time of imaging. Since the distance information is used for control of the wavefront control unit or the like during reproduction, the image information about the subject can be three-dimensionalized.
[0020]
Still another wavefront control type display device of the present invention is a wavefront control type display device that performs wavefront control of a display screen based on depth information together with image information. Based on depth information about a display unit and image information to be arranged and displayed facing the two-dimensional image display unit A plurality of light emitting pixels among the light emitting pixels. A wavefront control unit that scans a wavefront control region that simultaneously controls the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit corresponding to the light emitting region of The focal length of the wavefront control region is f, the distance between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit is s, the diameter of the wavefront control region is D, the distance between both eyes is E, and the display device is When the distance between the viewer and the display device is y, the expression fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f) is satisfied, The normal direction of the wavefront control region is controlled to have an angle with the optical axis direction of the light emitting region of the corresponding light emitting pixel.
[0021]
In this wavefront control type display device, the normal direction of the wavefront control region and the optical axis of the light emitting region of the light emitting pixel are not in the same direction, but have a relationship of intersecting with a required angle. Therefore, a wide effective angle of view that can be recognized by a viewer of the display device can be obtained, and an image spreading in the field of view is displayed together with the above-described three-dimensional image display function.
[0022]
Still another wavefront control type display device according to the present invention includes a two-dimensional image display unit configured by arranging a plurality of light emitting pixels in a two-dimensional form, and an image to be arranged and displayed facing the two-dimensional image display unit. Based on depth information about information A plurality of light emitting pixels among the light emitting pixels. A wavefront control unit that scans the wavefront control region that simultaneously controls the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit corresponding to the light emitting region, and a mirror that reflects the display wavefront from the wavefront control unit. The focal length of the wavefront control region is f, the distance between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit is s, the diameter of the wavefront control region is D, the distance between both eyes is E, and the display If the distance between the viewer of the device and the display device is y, the expression fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f) is satisfied. It is characterized by that.
[0023]
According to the wavefront control type display device, the wavefront-controlled display wavefront from the wavefront control unit is reflected by the mirror, and an image reflected by the mirror can be displayed to a person viewing the display device. . Even when reflected by a mirror, the image processed based on the depth information is displayed with a sense of depth to the viewer.
[0024]
Furthermore, the wavefront control type display device of the present invention is opposed to a two-dimensional image display unit configured by arranging a plurality of light emitting pixels in a dome shape or a cylindrical shape covering a user's head, and the two-dimensional image display unit. Based on depth information about image information to be placed and displayed A plurality of light emitting pixels among the light emitting pixels. A wavefront control unit that scans a wavefront control region that simultaneously controls the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit corresponding to the light emitting region of The focal length of the wavefront control region is f, the distance between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit is s, the diameter of the wavefront control region is D, the distance between both eyes is E, and the display If the distance between the viewer of the device and the display device is y, the expression fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f) is satisfied. It is characterized by that.
[0025]
According to this wavefront control type display device, a plurality of light emitting pixels are arranged in a dome shape or a cylindrical shape covering the user's head, the angle of the screen can be increased, and the display device is operated. It is also possible to significantly reduce the power consumption in the state of being in comparison with a large screen device or the like. In the wavefront control type display device of the present invention, the combination of the two-dimensional image display unit and the wavefront control unit that scans the wavefront control region that simultaneously controls the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit is applied to the user's head. Even if the display unit exists at a close position, it can be adjusted so that an image is displayed at a relatively distant position from the display unit, and a sense of realism equivalent to that of a large screen can be created.
[0026]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
A preferred embodiment of a wavefront control type display device of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. First, FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of a wavefront control type display device having a liquid crystal lens structure, the main components of which are a two-dimensional image display unit 11 configured by arranging a plurality of light emitting pixels in two dimensions, and the two-dimensional image display unit 11 described above. Wavefront control for simultaneously controlling the wavefront of the display wavefront from the two-dimensional image display unit corresponding to the light-emitting areas of the plurality of light-emitting pixels based on depth information about image information to be arranged and displayed opposite to the three-dimensional image display unit The wavefront control unit 12 scans the region 15.
[0027]
The two-dimensional image display unit 11 has a plurality of light emitting pixels developed in a planar shape, and the light emitting pixels may have a structure made of, for example, a semiconductor light emitting element. Other displays such as a liquid crystal display (LCD), Organic electroluminescent (EL) display device, electroluminescence (Field Emission) display device, plasma display panel (PDP) display device, electrochromic display device, display device using fluorescent display tube, cathode ray tube (CRT) Various display devices such as the display device used, projectors, and other devices can be used. However, the display device is not particularly limited as long as the wavefront control unit 12 can control the wavefront.
[0028]
For example, when the two-dimensional image display unit 11 is composed of light emitting elements arranged in an array, the light emitting pixel is composed of a combination of individual light emitting elements or three light emitting elements corresponding to the three primary colors in the case of color display. A plurality of such light emitting pixels are arranged on the display unit 11 to constitute the two-dimensional image display unit 11. The two-dimensional image display unit 11 is supplied with a required image signal, and this image signal is sent to the two-dimensional image display
[0029]
The two-dimensional image display unit 11 has a structure facing the wavefront control unit 12 having a liquid crystal lens structure. The wavefront control unit 12 has a plurality of micro cells 16 arranged in a matrix, and has a structure capable of controlling the refractive index of the micro cells 16 by changing the voltage applied to each micro cell 16. That is, each of the microcells 16 has a liquid crystal structure sandwiched between transparent electrodes, and the refractive index of the microcell 16 near the center within an arbitrary range is increased to increase the refractive index of the microcell 16 in the peripheral portion. By lowering the value, a lens-like function is produced, which functions as a so-called liquid crystal lens. The use of the liquid crystal device as a lens in this way is described in, for example, “MODEL LIQUID CRYSTAL WAVEFORT CORRECTORS” G. D. Love et al. , 2nd International Works on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine, Durham, 12-16th July, 1999.
[0030]
The operation of the wavefront control unit 12 will be described. As an example, the wavefront control region 15 whose refractive index is high in the central portion and low in the peripheral portion drives the microcell 16 existing in the region. The wavefront control region 15 is formed and driven so as to scan the entire area of the wavefront control unit 12. The scanning method is not particularly limited, but various methods such as dot sequential and line sequential as described later can be used in addition to the interlace method and the non-interlace method. The wavefront control region 15 on the wavefront control unit 12 is not limited to one location, and may be provided at a plurality of locations simultaneously by devising a voltage applied to the microcell 16, in which case a plurality of wavefront control regions are controlled simultaneously. The The wavefront control region 15 is a region that functions as a lens for light transmitted through the portion, and is a region that controls the phase of the display wavefront transmitted through the wavefront control region 15 by shifting the refractive index. When the wavefront control region 15 is scanned, the light emitting pixels of the two-dimensional image display unit 11 can be scanned in synchronization therewith. That is, the luminescent pixels of the two-dimensional image display unit 11 are scanned by various methods such as dot sequential and line sequential as described later, in addition to the interlace method and non-interlace method, in accordance with the scanning method of the wavefront control unit 12. It is preferable to operate in such a manner that the light emitting pixel or pixels emitting light and the wavefront control region 15 are synchronized. Further, a structure may be adopted in which the distance between the wavefront control unit 12 and the two-dimensional image display unit 11 is changed for each pixel or according to the wavefront control region 15.
[0031]
The wavefront control region 15 of the wavefront control unit 12 has a size corresponding to the light emission regions of the plurality of light emitting pixels of the two-dimensional image display unit 11 and is sufficiently larger than the light emitting pixels of the two-dimensional image display unit 11. Has been. This is because the larger the size of the region functioning as a lens, the larger the amount of image pop-out can be due to the binocular parallax. By driving the wavefront control region 15 larger than the pixel size, the image pop-out amount can be increased. A large amount of stereoscopic video can be generated. The shape of the wavefront control region 15 may be circular, but may be other shapes such as a regular square shape, an elliptical shape, a rectangular shape, a rhombus shape as described later.
[0032]
A control signal for forming the wavefront control region 15 is supplied to the wavefront control unit 12 via the wavefront control
[0033]
One of the main features of the wavefront control type display device of this embodiment is that it can take a large binocular parallax. FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram for explaining the binocular parallax. In FIG. 2, with reference to the position of the lens (wavefront control region), the distance from the lens to the image is x, the distance from the lens to the person viewing the display device is y, the lens diameter is D, and the distance between both eyes. If E is E, and z is the range in which the image at the position of the viewer who can see the display device can be seen, the left and right triangles are similar to each other with the image position at the center.
[0034]
[0035]
Here, since the condition that can be seen with both eyes is z ≧ E, when the above equation is converted into an equation for x,
[0036]
Formula 2 x ≦ D · y (65 + D)
[0037]
It is represented by
[0038]
Based on this formula 2, the maximum pop-out amount (distance) x max FIG. 3 shows the calculation result obtained for. In FIG. 3, the maximum protrusion amount (distance) x as the lens diameter (D) increases when the distance y from the lens to the person viewing the display device is 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, or 5 m. max Shows a tendency to increase. Maximum pop-out amount (distance) x max Is a parameter to give a sense of depth for stereoscopic display, and the maximum pop-up amount (distance) x max When the value is larger, stereoscopic display is easier. When the distance y from the lens to the person viewing the display device is the same, the maximum protrusion amount (distance) x as the lens diameter (D) increases. max The larger the lens diameter, the smaller the lens diameter (D), the larger the maximum protrusion amount (distance) x max Becomes smaller. For example, when an image formed with a lens diameter (D) of about 1 mm is viewed at a position where the distance y is 3 m, the image can be projected up to about 4.5 cm, and a sense of depth due to binocular parallax can be obtained. Will be. By using a large lens, the pop-out amount increases. For example, when a lens with D of about 3 cm is used, if the distance y from the lens to the person viewing the display device is 3 m from the graph of FIG. The amount x is about 1 m, and a considerably large parallax can be obtained.
[0039]
By the way, the range in which binocular parallax is possible is a range that satisfies the above-described Expression 2. In the case where Formula 2 is rewritten with the focal length of the wavefront control region (lens) as f and the distance between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit as s, generally f is -1 = S -1 + X -1 Therefore, the condition of Equation 2 is
[0040]
Formula 3 fs (E + D) ≦ Dy (s−f)
[0041]
If the focal length f of the wavefront control region (lens) and the distance s between the wavefront control region and the two-dimensional image display unit are set so as to satisfy Equation 3, both eyes with a sense of depth Parallax can be obtained.
[0042]
FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 are diagrams showing a configuration for obtaining a good binocular parallax by scanning a relatively large wavefront control region in synchronization with a light emitting point. As described above, when a wavefront control region having a relatively large size with respect to the size of the light emitting point or the light emitting pixel is used for imaging, the binocular parallax can be increased. FIG. 4 shows an example in which the light emitting points 24 move in the horizontal direction in a dot-sequential manner, and the

This example is one type of point sequential drive method, but the wavefront control region of the wavefront control unit is driven point-sequentially corresponding to the light-emitting pixels in a minute section that divides the display surface of the two-dimensional image display unit. It is. The minute sections are composed of groups each having two pixels in the vertical and horizontal directions, and such minute sections are arranged in a matrix on the screen. In FIG. 8, the dot-sequential driving is performed so that the four points in the section are sequentially lit in an N shape from (a) to (d). One of them is a
[0051]
According to such a driving method, the four light emission patterns from (a) to (d) form one cycle, and wavefront control is performed on all the light emitting pixels. The order from (a) to (d) is an example, and the light emission patterns from (a) to (d) may be scanned in different orders. For example, if the time of one cycle is 1 / 60th of a second, the time required for one pattern may be 1 / 240th of a second, and sufficient operation can be performed using a wavefront control unit with a response speed on the order of milliseconds. Will do.
[0052]
The example shown in FIG. 8 is an example in which one cycle is completed with four light emission patterns. However, the number of patterns can be arbitrarily set, and light emission can be performed for each color. Different control may be performed for each. It is also possible to divide the screen into several parts and use different driving methods. For example, an elliptical wavefront control region as shown in FIG. 7 is formed in a certain section on the screen where perspective is most necessary, and a circular wavefront control area is formed in a section where perspective is not important. Such control is also possible.
[0053]
Such a wavefront control area is driven by using a liquid crystal lens described below. FIG. 9 is a diagram illustrating a structure example of the wavefront control unit of the wavefront control type display device. (A) is sectional drawing of a liquid-crystal lens part, (b) is a top view of a wavefront control part.

[0057]
When such a liquid crystal lens is made of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material, the refractive index can be changed in a range of n = 1.389 to 1.666. This is due to the fact that the refractive index of the liquid crystal varies depending on the electric field direction or incident direction of light due to birefringence. As shown in FIG. 10, the refractive index of the central portion of the liquid crystal lens is n = 1.487 to 1.666, and the refractive index of the peripheral portion is n = 1.490. Thus, when the refractive index of the central part is larger than that of the peripheral part, the speed of light v in the liquid crystal becomes v = c / n (c is the speed of light in a vacuum), so that the light transmitted through the center passes through the periphery. There will be a delay compared to the light that has passed. As schematically shown in FIG. 10, the wavefront controller 71 constituting the liquid crystal lens has

Here, the refractive index n of the
[0059]
When the focal length is extremely long, it is difficult to increase the maximum jumping distance depending on the relationship with the distance from the light emitting pixel to the wavefront control unit, and it becomes difficult to obtain a sense of depth. Thus, there is a method of increasing the thickness of the liquid crystal layer as a method of shortening the focal length to, for example, 10 cm or less, and a multilayer structure as shown in FIG. In the multi-layered liquid crystal device shown in FIG. 11, a lower transparent electrode 83 made of an ITO film or the like is formed on a transparent lower substrate 81, while an upper transparent electrode made of an ITO film or the like is formed below the transparent upper substrate 82. 84, and intermediate layers 86 and liquid crystal layers 85 are alternately and repeatedly provided in the space between the lower transparent electrode 83 and the upper transparent electrode 84.
[0060]
By adopting such a multilayer structure, even when each liquid crystal layer 85 is as thin as 2 μm, for example, by stacking 1000 layers, the total thickness becomes 2000 μm, and the focal length can be shortened to, for example, f = 3.5 cm. it can. Therefore, it becomes easy to obtain a sense of depth by using a multilayer structure. When controlling the wavefront control unit having a multilayer structure, if the refractive index is made equal between the central part and the peripheral part of the wavefront control region, the focal distance is infinitely far, so the focal distance f is 3.5 cm to infinity. It becomes variable in the range. When the distance between the two-dimensional image display unit and the wavefront control unit is s, and the value of s = 5 cm is substituted in the above-described equation 3, the image projection distance x changes from 11.7 cm to infinity cm. In addition, when the focal length is changed from 5 cm to infinity, the retraction distance of the image can be changed from x = minus infinity to −5.0 cm.

Since the wavefront control type display device as described above is controlled based on depth information, it is driven by a signal including depth information in addition to normal image information. Therefore, it is necessary to capture depth information in addition to normal image information when imaging a subject. By displaying an image with information including such depth information, the wavefront control type display device according to the present invention is stereoscopically displayed. It can be used as an image display device.
