Description
The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescent element (hereinafter referred to as an organic EL element) used for a planar light source or a display element.
Phys. Lett., 51, 913 (1987). )。 An organic EL element in which a light emitting layer is composed of an organic compound has attracted attention as a means for realizing a large-area display element that can be driven at a low voltage. Tang et al. Stacked organic compounds with different carrier transport properties to increase the efficiency of the device, so that holes and electrons were injected in a balanced manner from the anode and cathode, respectively, and the layer thickness of the organic layer was 2000 mm or less. As a result, we succeeded in obtaining high luminance and high efficiency sufficient for practical application of 1000 cd / m 2 and external quantum efficiency of 1% at an applied voltage of 10 V or less (Appl. Phys. Lett., 51, 913 (1987 ). In this high-efficiency device, Tang et al. Have a low work function Mg (magnesium) in order to lower the energy barrier that becomes a problem when injecting electrons from metal electrodes to organic compounds that are basically regarded as insulators. It was used. At that time, Mg is easily oxidized and unstable, and it is relatively stable because it has poor adhesion to the organic surface. Moreover, it is alloyed by co-evaporation with Ag (silver) having good adhesion to the organic surface. It was.

A lower driving voltage and a higher luminance are achieved. In addition, the present inventors have reported that a two-layer cathode in which Li is deposited on an organic compound layer as thin as about 10 mm and silver is laminated thereon is effective in realizing a low driving voltage. As described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 63-264692, these elements have an organic layer that is basically an insulator by setting the organic layer thickness to 1 μm or less (substantially 0.2 μm or less). This enables driving at a low voltage that can withstand practical use.
As shown in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 10-270171, the applicant of the present invention uses a metal having a low work function such as an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or a transition metal containing a rare earth metal and an electron-accepting organic substance by a co-evaporation technique. A low voltage drive independent of the work function of the cathode was realized by mixing a predetermined amount to form an electron injection layer. In this device, a metal which is a donor (electron-donating) dopant substance that can be a reducing agent for an organic compound is doped in the organic compound layer in contact with the cathode, so that the organic compound is in a reduced state (that is, an electron). Therefore, the electron injection energy barrier can be reduced, and the driving voltage can be further reduced as compared with a conventional organic EL device. In addition, a stable metal such as Al that is generally used as a wiring material can be used for the cathode. In such a metal doping layer, if an appropriate combination of an organic compound and a metal is selected, an increase in driving voltage is observed even when the layer thickness is increased to the μm order, unlike a conventional layer composed only of organic matter. In other words, the layer thickness dependency of the driving voltage disappears.
On the other hand, the emission spectrum of an organic EL element uses the fluorescence of an organic dye. Therefore, the half-value width of the spectrum is generally wide and is not always satisfactory from the viewpoint of color purity. There are also some ideas.
As shown in JP-A-8-213174, Hitachi, Ltd. Nakayama et al. Provided a translucent reflective layer between a glass substrate and an ITO (indium-tin oxide) transparent electrode, and a light emitting layer and a back electrode (cathode). By adjusting the optical distance (optical path length) between the two, the effect of an optical resonator is provided and the color purity is successfully improved.
In addition, as shown in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 9-180883, Tokito et al. At Toyota Central Research Laboratory set the optical path length using a structure almost the same as that of Nakayama et al. And strong forward directivity.
These element structures are semi-transparent reflections in which thin films with different refractive indexes such as TiO 2 and SiO 2 are alternately laminated between a transparent conductive film as an anode and a transparent glass substrate. A film is formed, and an optical resonator structure is formed between the cathode and the cathode as a reflecting mirror. In order to obtain an effective resonance length in an attempt to use the interference action, the translucent reflective layer had to be provided outside the organic layer in this way.
Matsumura et al. Of Osaka University created an interference phenomenon with the light reflected by the cathode by intentionally setting the thickness of the aluminum quinoline complex (Alq3), which is an electron injection layer and light emitting layer, to be 3000 mm thicker than that of a normal device. By analyzing the spectrum, the cathode material dependence, device degradation dependence, and voltage dependence of the light emitting region are discussed (thin solid films331 (1998) 96-100, Synthetic Metals 91 (1997) 197-198, IEEE TRANSACTION ON ELECTRON DEVICES, VOL.44, NO.8, AUGUST 1997). Although this can be said to be a useful method as one of analysis methods, an increase in drive voltage cannot be avoided.
The present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and an object of the present invention is not only to reduce the drive voltage of the device but also to reduce the drive voltage by making the electron injection layer in contact with the cathode a metal doping layer. An organic EL element that also functions as an emission spectrum control layer is provided by utilizing the fact that it does not depend on the thickness of the metal doping layer.
In the present invention, when the organic compound layer in contact with the cathode is doped with a metal functioning as a donor (electron donating) dopant, an electron injection barrier from the cathode to the organic compound layer is reduced, and the thickness of the metal doping layer is increased. However, it has been completed by finding that the drive voltage does not increase.
That is, in the aspect of the organic EL device, the organic EL device having at least one light emitting layer composed of an organic compound between the facing anode electrode and the cathode electrode, and bathocuproine at the interface with the cathode electrode, 1 with lithium molar ratio: adjust the respective deposition rates to be 1, an organic compound layer doped with lithium functions as a donor dopant having a metal doping layer, an organic compound layer of the metal doping layer, The emission spectrum of the light emitted from the organic electroluminescent device is controlled by the thickness of the metal doping layer. The metal doping layer has divided areas having different thicknesses in each area. It is characterized by that.
When the thickness of the metal doping layer is changed in this way, the optical layer thickness (the optical path length of the layer thickness; layer thickness × refractive index) between the cathode and the light emitting layer acting as a reflecting mirror changes. Thus, the emission spectrum of light emitted from the device can be controlled. In other words, when a metal doping layer is used for the electron injection layer in contact with the cathode, the driving voltage of the device does not depend on the layer thickness of the metal doping layer, so the light interference effect is used without sacrificing device characteristics. Thus, not only the color purity can be improved, but also light of various colors can be obtained by adjusting the thickness of the metal doping layer. That is, even if the thickness of the metal doping layer is increased, the color purity can be improved and the color tone can be changed without increasing the driving voltage.
In addition, if a molecule having a function as a ligand for a metal ion to be doped (a function capable of coordinating to the metal ion) is used in the organic compound of the metal doping layer, the reduction reaction described above is further improved. Since it occurs effectively and can exist in a stable state, it can be used particularly preferably.
The organic EL device according to the present invention can be provided with divided areas having different layer thicknesses in each area as a metal doping layer. If such a divided area is provided, an organic EL element having a different emission spectrum for each divided area can be obtained. The layer thickness of the divided area is controlled so that a specific emission spectrum is obtained in each divided area. Such divided areas can be, for example, a large number of pixel groups arranged in a matrix.
Furthermore, in the aspect of the method for controlling the emission spectrum of the organic EL device, the present invention has at least one light emitting layer composed of an organic compound between the opposing anode electrode and the cathode electrode, and the light emission of the cathode electrode. The vapor deposition rate is adjusted so that the molar ratio of bathocuproine and lithium is 1: 1 at the interface on the layer side, and an organic compound layer doped with lithium that functions as a donor (electron donating) dopant is used as a metal doping layer. The organic compound layer of the metal doping layer is made of bathocuproine, and by changing the layer thickness of the metal doping layer, the emission spectrum of light emitted from the organic electroluminescent device is controlled, and the layer thickness of the metal doping layer is increased. Regardless of the layer thickness, multiple organic electroluminescent devices that have been changed to change their emission spectra are almost identical. It is characterized in that driven by the driving voltage. A plurality of organic electroluminescent elements in which the emission spectrum is changed by changing the thickness of the metal doping layer can be driven with substantially the same driving voltage regardless of the layer thickness.
ADVANTAGE OF THE INVENTION According to this invention, the organic electroluminescent element which can control the light emission spectrum while reducing the drive voltage of an element can be provided by using the electron injection layer which contact | connects a cathode as a metal doping layer.

Rev. Lett., 14, 229 (1965))。
In organic EL devices, the electron injection process from the cathode to the organic compound layer, which is basically an insulator, is reduction of the organic compound on the cathode surface, that is, formation of a radical anion state (Phys. Rev. Lett., 14 , 229 (1965)). In the organic EL device of the present invention, a metal which is a donor (electron-donating) dopant substance that can be a reducing agent for an organic compound is doped in the organic compound layer in contact with the cathode in advance to inject electrons from the cathode electrode. The energy barrier can be lowered. The
The dopant concentration in the metal doping layer is preferably such that the molar ratio of the donor dopant in the metal doping layer is 0.1 to 10 with respect to the organic compound. If it is less than 0.1, the concentration of the molecule reduced by the dopant (hereinafter referred to as reducing molecule) is too low, and the effect of doping is small. If it exceeds 10, the metal concentration in the film far exceeds the organic molecule concentration, and the reducing molecule Since the concentration of is extremely reduced, the doping effect is also reduced. Moreover, there is basically no upper limit on the thickness of the metal doping layer.

[Example]
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described with reference to examples, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In addition, the VPC-400 vacuum evaporation machine made from a vacuum machine company was used for vapor deposition of an organic compound and a metal, and the DekTak3ST stylus type step gauge made from a Sloane company was used for the measurement of layer thickness. For the device characteristic evaluation, a Keithley source meter 2400 and a Topcon BM-8 luminance meter were used. A direct current voltage was applied stepwise at a rate of 1 V / 2 seconds using ITO as an anode and Al as a cathode, and the luminance and current value after 1 second of voltage increase were measured. The EL spectrum was measured by driving at a constant current using a Hamamatsu Photonics PMA-11 optical multichannel analyzer.

The metal doping layers having three kinds of thicknesses of 1900 mm, 4800 mm, and 10,000 mm (1 μm) were respectively formed by adjusting the deposition rate so that the molar ratio of bathocuproine and Li represented by 1 was 1: 1. From there, 1000 elements of Al were vapor-deposited as the

Comparative Example 1
As in Example 2 and Example 3, after vacuum-depositing 500 nm of αNPD as the
As described above, when a compound that functions as a ligand for the metal ion to be doped, such as bathophenanthroline or bathocuproine, is used as the organic substance in the metal doping layer, the reduction of the organic substance occurs effectively to generate a radical anion. Therefore, it was found that the dependency of the driving voltage on the layer thickness disappeared and the emission spectrum could be controlled freely.
As described above, according to the organic EL element of the present invention, the emission spectrum of light emitted from the element can be controlled by changing the thickness of the metal doping layer. Therefore, in the organic EL element of the present invention, an element having a different emission color for each divided area can be obtained by setting a divided area having a different layer thickness in each area in the metal doping layer. Furthermore, color display is possible by using a large number of pixel groups in which the divided areas are arranged in a matrix and changing the emission color by changing the layer thickness for each pixel. For example, as shown in FIG. 7, three
