Description
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal device and an electronic apparatus.
In particular, in the field of liquid crystal devices represented by liquid crystal televisions and the like, in recent years, an OCB (Optical Compensated Bend) mode liquid crystal device having a high response speed has been spotlighted for the purpose of improving the quality of moving images. In the OCB mode, in the initial state, the liquid crystal molecules are in a splay alignment that is opened in a splay shape between two substrates, and the liquid crystal molecules must be bent in a bow (bend alignment) during display operation. . That is, high-speed response is realized by modulating the transmittance with the degree of bending of the bend orientation during the display operation.
As described above, in the case of the OCB mode liquid crystal device, since the liquid crystal is in the splay alignment when the power is shut off, by applying a voltage higher than a certain threshold voltage to the liquid crystal when the power is turned on, the initial splay alignment is changed to the bend alignment in the display operation. A so-called initial transition operation is required to shift the alignment state of the liquid crystal. Here, if the initial transition is not sufficiently performed, display failure may occur or desired high-speed response may not be obtained.
従って、パネル駆動時には、透過表示領域はOCBモード、反射表示領域はR−OCB(Reflective-Optical Compensated Bend)モードとなる。
However, the technique described in Patent Document 1 has a problem that alignment failure occurs around the protrusions formed in the transmissive display region during the display operation. Further, if the formation region of the protrusion is covered with a light shielding layer, the aperture ratio is reduced. In addition, since the liquid crystal alignment state in the reflective display region is set to hybrid alignment, it is necessary to make only the alignment film in the reflective display region vertical alignment by photo-alignment processing or the like, which increases the manufacturing process.
The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and an object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal device capable of smoothly performing the initial transition operation in the OCB mode while minimizing deterioration in display quality. To do.
Another object is to provide an electronic device with excellent display quality.
In order to solve the above-described problem, the liquid crystal device of the present invention includes a first substrate and a second substrate that are opposed to each other with a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween, and a reflective display region and a transmissive display region are formed in one pixel. And a liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer, wherein a thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the reflective display region is smaller than a thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive display region. In the liquid crystal device provided in at least the reflective display region in the pixel and in which the operation mode in at least the transmissive display region is the OCB mode, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate. A step-graded portion is provided between the thick region and the thin region, and the alignment film in a region overlapping the step-gradient portion in a planar manner exhibits an alignment state different from the alignment state of the liquid crystal in the display region of the pixel. The liquid Characterized in that the initial transition means for forming an initial transition nucleus layer is provided.
If an initial transition means is provided and a boundary (disclination) in which liquid crystal molecular orientations are different from each other is generated by applying an initial transition voltage, the disclination becomes a transition nucleus and the initial transition proceeds to the periphery. Therefore, the initial transition operation can be performed smoothly.
In general, in the step-graded portion of the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer, liquid crystal molecules are tilted and an oblique electric field is generated, so that the alignment state is likely to be disturbed compared to the flat portion. That is, the stepped inclined portion of the liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer does not contribute to the improvement of display quality during the display operation. Therefore, by providing an initial transition means at the step slope portion of the liquid crystal layer thickness adjustment layer, even if disclination remains around the initial transition means, the degradation of display quality during display operation is minimized. Can do. By providing the initial transition means at the step slope portion, it becomes easier to generate disclination compared to the case where the initial transition means is provided at other portions. Therefore, the initial transition operation can be performed smoothly.
The liquid crystal device according to the present invention includes a first substrate and a second substrate which are disposed to face each other with a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween, and a reflective display region and a transmissive display region are formed in one pixel, and the first Between the substrate and the liquid crystal layer, a liquid crystal layer thickness adjusting layer that makes the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the reflective display region smaller than the thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive display region is at least the reflective layer in the pixel. In a liquid crystal device provided in a display area and having an operation mode in at least the transmissive display area of an OCB mode, a boundary area between a thick area and a thin area of the liquid crystal layer is provided on the liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate. And a first alignment film and a second alignment film are formed on the surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate on the liquid crystal layer side, respectively. Second orientation Configuration that of the stepped inclined portion and a region planarly overlapping the at least one alignment film, characterized in that the initial transition means for forming an initial transition nucleus of the liquid crystal layer is provided can also be applied. With such a configuration, a liquid crystal region having an orientation different from that of the display region outside the step inclined portion may be formed in the liquid crystal layer positioned in the planar region of the step inclined portion by the alignment regulating force of the alignment film. Thus, the initial transition operation can be smoothly performed using the disclination generated in such an area as the initial transition nucleus.
The alignment regulating direction with respect to the liquid crystal of at least one alignment film of the first alignment film and the second alignment film in a region overlapping with the step inclined portion is outside the region overlapping with the step inclined portion. It can also be set as the direction which is different from the said orientation control direction in a display area. With such a configuration, a plurality of liquid crystal regions can be formed in the pixel due to the difference in the alignment regulation direction, and an initial transition operation using the disclination generated at the boundary between these liquid crystal regions as an initial transition nucleus. Can be performed.
The alignment regulating means in at least one of the first alignment film and the second alignment film is subjected to rubbing treatment, and the rubbing treatment direction is a region that overlaps with the step inclined portion in a plane, and the outside of the region. It is possible to adopt a configuration in which the display area is in a different direction. At least one of the first alignment film and the second alignment film is a photo-alignment film, and an alignment control direction by the photo-alignment process overlaps with the step-gradient portion in a plane, and outside the region A configuration in which the display area is in a different direction may be employed. As described above, the alignment process for the first alignment film or the second alignment film may be a rubbing process or a photo-alignment process.
In the initial transition unit, it is preferable that an angle formed by the orientation regulation direction of the first substrate and the orientation regulation direction of the second substrate is larger than 90 °. A twist alignment region can be formed according to the alignment regulation direction of the first substrate and the alignment regulation direction of the second substrate. At this time, disclination is formed at the boundary between the splay and the twist region. However, it is known that the transition can be surely induced if the twist angle is 90 ° or more.
At least one of the first alignment film and the second alignment film in a region overlapping with the step inclined portion in a plane has a plurality of alignment control directions with respect to the liquid crystal, and the plurality of alignment control directions However, it is also possible to adopt a configuration in which the direction is different from the orientation regulating direction in the display region outside the region overlapping the step-gradient portion in plan view. With such a configuration, a plurality of liquid crystal regions can be formed in the liquid crystal layer corresponding to the step inclined portion, the boundary between these liquid crystal regions, and the liquid crystal region corresponding to these liquid crystal regions and the display region The initial alignment transition can be advanced using the disclination occurring at the boundary between the initial transition nucleus and the initial transition operation can be performed more smoothly and quickly.
A plurality of liquid crystal regions having different twist directions may be formed in the liquid crystal layer in a region overlapping the step-gradient portion in plan view. With such a configuration, it is possible to generate disclination more effectively at the liquid crystal region boundary. The plurality of liquid crystal regions having different twist directions may include a homogeneous alignment liquid crystal region and a splay alignment liquid crystal region. According to this configuration, the splay alignment region is affected by the twisted homogeneous alignment state when a voltage is applied, resulting in reverse twisting and twisted homogeneous alignment. As a result, disclination occurs at the boundary between the homogeneous alignment region, the spray region, and other spray regions (regions other than the alignment means), and bend transition proceeds. For this reason, by setting the twist angle to be less than 90 °, which is the twist angle in the splay state, the angle of the twist homogeneous region that has changed into the orientation state due to the reverse twist can be made an angle greater than 90 °. Therefore, the twist angle of the liquid crystal in the splay alignment liquid crystal region is preferably less than 90 °.
A pretilt angle in a region overlapping with the step inclination portion of at least one of the first alignment film and the second alignment film in a plane overlaps with a pretilt in a display region outside the region overlapping with the step inclination portion. It can also be configured to be larger than the corners. With such a configuration, it becomes easy to generate disclination at the boundary between the liquid crystal region corresponding to the step-gradient portion and the liquid crystal region corresponding to the display region. In addition, since the alignment state of the liquid crystal in the region corresponding to the step inclined portion can be brought close to bend alignment, the smoothness of the initial alignment transition can be improved.
A vertical alignment film may be formed in a region that overlaps the step-gradient portion of at least one of the first alignment film and the second alignment film in a planar manner. With such a configuration, it is possible to form a hybrid alignment liquid crystal region that approximates a part of the bend alignment in the liquid crystal layer corresponding to the step inclined portion, and to improve the smoothness of the initial alignment transition. .
The operation mode in the reflective display region may be an R-OCB mode. With such a configuration, since the hybrid alignment liquid crystal region having a liquid crystal molecular arrangement close to bend alignment is formed in the reflective display region, the initial alignment transition can be performed smoothly.

In this case, the optical medium may have a positive refractive index anisotropy.
In the liquid crystal device according to the aspect of the invention, it is preferable that an optically anisotropic layer optically uniaxial or biaxial is provided on the outer surface side of the first substrate and / or the second substrate.

As shown in FIG. 3B,

An
On the other hand, a
Inside the

As a constituent material of the liquid crystal layer
A
As shown in FIG. 3B, a
Polarizing
Furthermore, an optical compensation film can be disposed inside the
FIG. 4 is an explanatory diagram of the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules in the OCB mode liquid crystal device. In the OCB mode, the initial state shown in FIG. 4B is an alignment state in which the
As described above, in the case of the OCB mode liquid crystal device, the liquid crystal when the power is shut off is in the splay alignment. Therefore, by applying a voltage higher than a certain threshold voltage to the liquid crystal when the power is turned on, the initial state shown in FIG. From this splay alignment, a so-called initial transition operation is required to transfer the alignment state of the liquid crystal to the bend alignment during the display operation shown in FIG. Here, if the initial transition is not sufficiently performed, display failure may occur or desired high-speed response may not be obtained.
As an initial transition operation of the
In the present embodiment, in order to generate disclination as an initial transition nucleus in the sub-pixel, the
In order to smoothly perform the initial alignment transition, the pretilt angle of the
In order to selectively perform alignment processing in different directions on the
Moreover, you may apply the normal rubbing process using a rubbing cloth. In this case, the
In the present embodiment, as shown in FIG. 3, a liquid crystal region having a liquid crystal alignment state different from that of the display region outside the region is formed in the plane region of the step inclined
In the present embodiment, the
また、本実施形態において、反射表示領域Rにおける動作モードをR−OCB(Reflective-Optical Compensated Bend)モードとしてもよい。
In the present embodiment, the operation mode in the reflective display region R may be an R-OCB (Reflective-Optical Compensated Bend) mode. In this case, a portion of the
(Second Embodiment)
Next, a
The
As shown in FIGS. 5A and 5B, in the
Also in the
By forming the
Since the liquid crystal regions having different alignment states are formed in the

Thereafter, the coating film in the region overlapping the stepped
In this way, the light irradiation process is first performed so that the liquid crystal is aligned in the direction along the
Moreover, you may apply the normal rubbing process using a rubbing cloth. In this case, the
In this embodiment, it is needless to say that the same modifications as those of the first embodiment can be added. That is, a configuration in which a part of the
<Modification of Second Embodiment>
Here, a modification of the liquid crystal device of the second embodiment will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 7 is a plan configuration diagram of one sub-pixel in the
As shown in FIG. 7A, in the sub-pixel of the
A
In the
Also in the
Further, as shown in FIG. 7A, in the present embodiment, the

(Third embodiment)
Next, a
The
As shown in FIGS. 8A and 8B, in the
In addition, the
The rubbing
In the
In order to form the
In this embodiment, it is needless to say that the same modifications as those of the first embodiment can be added. That is, a configuration in which a part of the
