容易に運送可能な液体化石燃料の供給が回復するためにより高価になるにつれて、産業界および政府は、化学原材料およびエネルギについてますます他の材料に依存しなければならない。1つの代案は、化学原材料を作りかつエネルギ担体を供給する合成ガス(すなわち一酸化炭素および水素分子の混合物)の使用である。適切な濃度、温度および圧力で集められた合成ガスの成分は、他の炭化水素生成物としては、メタノール、酢酸、エチレン、パラフィン、芳香族、オレフィン、エチレングリコール、および、エタノール、プロパノール、ブテノール、ジメチルエーテル、灯油、ディーゼルおよびガソリンなどの液体燃料を含む、フィッシャー・トロプシュ反応(Fischer-Tropsh synthesis)に基づいた様々な化学原材料を生産することができる。合成ガスは、加熱用に、電気的もしくは機械的動力を生産するための熱機関において、または電力を生産するための固体酸化物型燃料電池においても、直接燃焼され得る。合成ガスの水素分子成分は、酸素の中で燃焼し、排気ガスとして環境上良性の水蒸気(すなわちスチーム)しか伴わない、輸送用、加熱用、および電気生成用の燃料として用いられ得る。さらに、合成ガス生産は、化学原材料および電力共同生産または熱電併給システムの様々な組合わせを含み得る。
本発明の実施の形態は、水蒸気を含むガス混合物から水蒸気を分離するための装置を含む。この装置は、水蒸気を含むガス混合物に露出された第1の表面の少なくとも1つの部分、および第2の表面、すなわち第1の表面の反対側の表面、すなわち水蒸気の分圧が低い方の第2のガス混合物に露出される面の少なくとも1つの部分を有する混合イオン伝導メンブレンを含んでもよい。メンブレンは、同時に酸素イオンおよびプロトンを伝導することができる、少なくとも1つの非多孔性、ガス不浸透性の固体材料を含んでもよい。水蒸気を含むガス混合物からの水蒸気のうち少なくともいくらかは、メンブレンを通じて第2のガス混合物に選択的に輸送される。

本発明は、混合イオン伝導(MIC)メンブレンを用いて水蒸気を含むガス混合物から水蒸気(別名「スチーム」)を分離するための装置、システムおよび方法に関する。メンブレンは、同時に酸素イオンおよびプロトンを伝導することができる、固体の、非多孔性かつガス不浸透性材料を含む。水蒸気を含むガス混合物の水分子から提供された酸素イオン(O2-)は、メンブレンの表面上の露出した酸素空孔を満たす。同時に、水分子からの水素イオン(または等価的にはプロトン)は、メンブレン格子中の酸素イオンの近くのサイトを満たす。酸素空孔およびプロトンが同じ型の電荷(正)を有するので、それらはメンブレンの内部のバルクにわたって反対側の表面へ反対方向に移動することができる(すなわち両極性拡散)。

ここで図6を参照して、本発明による混合イオン伝導メンブレンを用いて水蒸気を転送する方法の実施の形態を例示するフローチャートが示される。方法600は、水蒸気を含むガス混合物の他の成分から選択的に水蒸気を分離することができる混合イオン伝導メンブレン602を与えるステップを含む。上述のように、混合イオン伝導メンブレンはガスの受動拡散に不浸透性の固体かつ非多孔性のメンブレンであってもよいが、両極性拡散プロセスによる水蒸気の能動輸送を可能にする。
図8は、800℃のメタンにおける様々の多数種の平衡モル比率対スチーム炭素比(S/C)を示す。1未満のS/Cについては、特に触媒がある状態では、メタンは熱分解し、コークス生成が期待される。1より僅かに上ののS/Cではコークス生成は抑えられ、
電気活性な種、H2およびCOの産出が最大限になる。さらに高いS/Cでは、燃焼生成物、CO2およびH2Oのモル比率は安定して増加する一方で、電気活性な種は減少する。その結果は、メタン燃料の単位当たりの電力を生産する能力が減少した燃料混合物となる。メタンが、いずれのS/C比率の平衡状態でも800℃ではあまり安定しないことが観察され得る。最大燃料電池効率のためには、理想的なS/C比率は1の僅かに上である。すなわち、燃料電池に入るメタンの各モルについて1モルのH2Oである。もちろん、ギブスの自由エネルギ(Gibbs free energy)の最小化のみを考慮するこの分析では、様々な反応の反応速度については何も示されておらず、所望の反応が完成まで進行することを確実するために適切な触媒が使用されなければならない。実際、化学平衡を達成したり、SOFCに入るすべての炭化水素燃料を改質したりすることは必要ではないかもしれない。Ni/YSZアノード支持上でコークスが形成されないようにスタックのアノードチャネルに入るガスのS/C比率を維持するだけでよいかもしれない。残りの炭化水素燃料を改質するための負荷下、燃料電池動作中に、アノードで追加の水蒸気が生産される。

- 混合イオン伝導メンブレンは、プロトンおよび酸素イオン空孔のメンブレンを通じた反対方向への移動によって水蒸気を輸送する、請求項1に記載の装置。

水蒸気を含むガス混合物からの水蒸気のうち少なくともいくらかは、メンブレンを通じて第2のガス混合物に選択的に輸送される、方法。 - メンブレンを通じた水蒸気の輸送は外部電流がメンブレンに供給されることを要求しない、請求項18に記載の方法。
