BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an ink jet recording head capable of detecting ink, an ink jet recording head substrate used in the ink jet recording head, and an ink jet recording apparatus that performs recording using the ink jet recording head.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A recording device having a function such as a printer, a copying machine, a facsimile, or a recording device used as an output device of a multifunction device including a computer, a word processor, or the like, or a workstation, uses paper or a plastic thin plate (for example, OHP). The image is recorded on a recording sheet. Such a recording apparatus is classified into an ink jet type, a wire dot type, a thermal type, a thermal transfer type, a laser beam type and the like depending on the recording method of the recording means used.
[0003]
Among these recording methods, an ink jet recording apparatus (ink jet recording apparatus) performs recording by discharging ink from an ink jet recording head (hereinafter also referred to as a recording head), which is a recording means, onto a recording medium such as a recording sheet. The recording means can be easily made compact, and high-definition images can be recorded at high speed. Furthermore, since it can be recorded on plain paper without the need for special processing, the running cost is low, and because it is a non-impact method, there is little noise during the recording operation, and multi-color ink is used. Thus, there are advantages such as easy recording of color images.
[0004]
There are several methods in such an ink jet recording system, and one of them is that a heating element for giving thermal energy to the ink is provided in the nozzle, and the heat generated by the heating element causes the ink in the nozzle to be heated. There is a bubble jet recording method in which ink is ejected from nozzles using foaming energy when bubbles are generated. Here, a heating element as a recording element that generates energy for ejecting ink can be manufactured using a semiconductor manufacturing process. Therefore, an ink jet recording head using a bubble jet recording method has a recording element formed on an element substrate made of a silicon substrate, and a top plate on which grooves for forming an ink flow path are formed. It has a configuration. The top plate is made of resin such as polysulfone, glass or the like.
[0005]
In addition to utilizing the fact that the element substrate is made of a silicon substrate, not only the recording element is configured on the element substrate, but also a driver for driving the recording element, and when the recording element is controlled according to the temperature of the recording head. Some of the temperature sensors used and the drive control unit of the temperature sensors are configured on an element substrate.
[0006]
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 7-256883 discloses an example of the substrate for the ink jet recording head described above. FIG. 9 shows the configuration of a conventional inkjet recording head substrate disclosed in the publication.

[0010]
Here, as one of important points for performing recording such as stable printing, the presence or absence of ink at the time of recording in the common liquid chamber in each head and each nozzle can be cited. In other words, when the amount of ink in the ink tank decreases, or when air is mixed into the nozzle from the nozzle tip or bubbles are generated in the common liquid chamber, the ink is stabilized. Therefore, it becomes difficult to discharge, and there is a risk of deteriorating the recording quality. For example, when a situation occurs in which it is difficult to stably eject ink to only a specific nozzle among a plurality of nozzles provided in an ink jet recording head, and that becomes a defective nozzle, recording by the defective nozzle As a result, no portion of the recorded image is recorded in a streak shape. In addition, when the ink in the common liquid chamber is low, ink may be supplied to only some of the nozzles, so partial ink non-ejection due to the occurrence of defective nozzles as described above. In the same manner as described above, the recording quality is deteriorated.
[0011]
In order to detect the occurrence state of partial ink non-ejection due to such a defective nozzle, methods for detecting the state of ink in the common liquid chamber and the nozzle, particularly the presence or absence of ink, have been proposed. .
[0012]
For example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 58-118267 proposes a method for detecting the presence or absence of ink for each nozzle of a plurality of nozzles arranged in an ink jet recording head. That is, in the case of this method, in order to detect the presence or absence of ink in each nozzle, a temperature detecting element whose resistance is changed by heat is arranged in each nozzle separately from the recording element. Then, when the ink in the nozzles runs out, the temperature rise change rate near the nozzles is increased by the heat generated by the heating element as the recording element, and the temperature rise change is detected by the temperature detection element. Thus, the presence or absence of ink is detected.
[0013]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the configuration disclosed in the above-mentioned JP-A-58-118267, in order to directly check the temperature in the vicinity of the nozzle, an element or sensor capable of detecting the temperature is arranged for each nozzle, These temperature detecting elements and driving elements for driving the sensors also need to be arranged in the nozzle or on the head substrate. Such a configuration can be effectively applied to a recording head in which the nozzle size is large and the nozzles are arranged at a relatively low density.
[0014]
However, in recent years, it has been demanded to achieve higher speed and higher definition recording, and in order to meet such demands, the number of nozzles arranged in the ink jet recording head is increased or the nozzles are arranged at high density. As a result, higher recording density is being promoted year by year.
[0015]
In such an ink jet recording head substrate in which nozzles are arranged at high density, an element or sensor for temperature detection is arranged corresponding to each recording element in the vicinity of the nozzle, or the element or sensor is arranged. It has become difficult to arrange driving elements for driving on a substrate. The same applies when the number of nozzles is increased, which means that the number of elements arranged on the substrate increases, and the chip size of the inkjet recording head substrate increases, or the sensor elements and other circuits are electrically connected. As a result, the number of wiring layers is increased. As a result, the structure on the substrate is complicated and the manufacturing cost of the chip is increased.
[0016]
Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 58-118267 does not specify the configuration of the detection terminal for electrically connecting the temperature detection element to the outside of the head, and corresponds to each recording element. If the detected terminals are provided on the substrate, the number of terminals necessary for the head increases. In addition, various parts such as an increase in the number of wirings such as a flexible substrate for electrically connecting the head and the recording apparatus, and an increase in elements on the recording apparatus main body for individually controlling signals in those wirings However, this increases the size of the apparatus and makes it difficult to avoid an increase in cost.
[0017]
In addition, in the configuration disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 58-118267, since the temperature change is detected, a recording method to which the detection method can be applied uses a heating element that generates thermal energy as a recording element. There was also a restriction that it was limited to the recording method used.
[0018]
An object of the present invention is to provide an ink jet recording head substrate, an ink jet recording head, and an ink jet recording apparatus that can detect ink in a recording head with a very simple configuration and can be widely applied to various recording methods. It is to provide.
[0019]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
An inkjet recording head substrate according to the present invention includes a recording element for supplying energy for ejecting ink in an inkjet recording head substrate mounted on an inkjet recording head for performing recording by ejecting ink from ejection ports. A driving element for driving the recording element; An insulating protective film formed on the inkjet recording head substrate; Said Located on protective film A detection electrode capable of detecting a change in voltage between the recording element and the driving element generated in response to driving of the recording element via ink; The voltage change region between the recording element and the drive element and the ink are transmitted by capacitive coupling, and the protective film is provided between the voltage change region and the ink. Capacitive coupling is formed so as to be partially changed, and the detection electrode is provided between the recording element and the drive element, with the capacitive coupling being separated from the large capacitive coupling with the small capacitive coupling interposed therebetween. It is characterized by that.
[0020]
An ink jet recording head of the present invention includes the above-described ink jet recording head substrate, and a top plate constituting nozzles corresponding to a predetermined number of the recording elements by being coupled to the ink jet recording head substrate. It is characterized by that.
[0022]
The ink jet recording apparatus of the present invention is the above ink jet recording head. The And an image can be recorded on a recording medium.
[0023]
The present invention has been made by paying attention to the fact that a voltage change occurs between the recording element and the driving element when the recording element is driven and is not driven, and the change in voltage is transmitted to the ink in an AC manner. Is. A voltage generation region in which a voltage is generated between the recording element and the driving element and the ink are insulated by, for example, a protective film.
[0024]
Specifically, the detection electrode on the substrate is used to detect a change in the voltage transmitted from the voltage generation region through the ink in an AC manner, and the detection voltage changes according to the amount of ink present. Detecting ink. For example, a transmission portion where the voltage change in the voltage generation region is transmitted in an alternating manner is electrically separated for each recording element, and the electrical resistance changes depending on the presence or absence of ink between the transmission portion and the detection electrode. By utilizing this, the presence or absence of ink can be detected for each nozzle.
[0025]
Further, in the present invention, the signal source of the ink detection signal is the recording element itself, and the heat of the recording element is not used as in the above-described conventional example. Therefore, the detection electrode is common to all the recording elements on the substrate. In the case where the recording element is a heating element, the detection electrode can be formed simultaneously with the formation of the cavitation protective film on the heating element.
[0026]
In addition, the present invention does not use heat for ink detection, and it is only necessary that the voltage change according to the driving of the recording element. Therefore, the present invention can be applied to various recording systems using various recording elements. it can.

[0059]
As described above, the energy transfer efficiency of the protective film on the heater can be increased by reducing the thickness of the protective film on the upper part of the heater or increasing the dielectric constant of the protective film on that portion. With such a configuration, since the heater portion functions greatly as a signal source, the position that becomes the signal source can inevitably be limited to a specific position on the heater. Furthermore, the other parts except the upper part of the heater can be made difficult to act as a signal source, and the influence of noise that causes erroneous detection can be reduced during ink detection. As a result, the ink detection sensitivity is increased. Therefore, it is possible to detect the presence or absence of ink with high accuracy. Further, as described above, by limiting the position to be a signal source, the detection electrodes can be flexibly arranged on the driver or the like.
[0060]
In the above-described embodiment, the bubble jet recording method in which ink is ejected using a heating element as the recording element has been described as an example. However, it is possible to detect the voltage change generated when the recording element is driven via ink in other recording methods. Therefore, the present invention is not limited to the bubble jet recording method and can be widely applied to other recording methods.
[0061]
In the above-described configuration, an example in which an anti-cavitation film for suppressing an impact at the time of defoaming in which air bubbles contract is formed on the upper portion of the heater as the substrate for the ink jet recording head has been described. However, if the ink having conductivity is used, the detection principle of the present invention can be applied even when there is no anti-cavitation film.
[0062]
(Other)
The present invention includes a means (for example, an electrothermal converter or a laser beam) that generates thermal energy as energy used for ejecting ink, particularly in the ink jet recording system, and the ink is generated by the thermal energy. In the recording head and the recording apparatus of the type that causes the state change, excellent effects are brought about. This is because such a system can achieve high recording density and high definition.
[0063]
As for the typical configuration and principle, for example, those performed using the basic principle disclosed in US Pat. Nos. 4,723,129 and 4,740,796 are preferable. This method can be applied to both the so-called on-demand type and the continuous type. In particular, in the case of the on-demand type, it is arranged corresponding to the sheet or liquid path holding the liquid (ink). By applying at least one drive signal corresponding to the recorded information and giving a rapid temperature rise exceeding nucleate boiling to the electrothermal transducer, the thermal energy is generated in the electrothermal transducer, and the recording head This is effective because film boiling occurs on the heat acting surface of the liquid and, as a result, bubbles in the liquid (ink) corresponding to the drive signal on a one-to-one basis can be formed. By the growth and contraction of the bubbles, liquid (ink) is ejected through the ejection opening to form at least one droplet. It is more preferable that the drive signal has a pulse shape, since the bubble growth and contraction is performed immediately and appropriately, and thus it is possible to achieve discharge of a liquid (ink) having particularly excellent responsiveness. As this pulse-shaped drive signal, those described in US Pat. Nos. 4,463,359 and 4,345,262 are suitable. Further excellent recording can be performed by employing the conditions described in US Pat. No. 4,313,124 of the invention relating to the temperature rise rate of the heat acting surface.
[0064]
As the configuration of the recording head, in addition to the combination configuration (straight liquid channel or right angle liquid channel) of the discharge port, the liquid channel, and the electrothermal transducer as disclosed in each of the above-mentioned specifications, the heat acting part The configurations using US Pat. No. 4,558,333 and US Pat. No. 4,459,600, which disclose the configuration in which the lens is disposed in the bending region, are also included in the present invention. In addition, for a plurality of electrothermal transducers, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. Sho 59-123670 that discloses a configuration in which a common slit is used as a discharge portion of the electrothermal transducer or an aperture that absorbs pressure waves of thermal energy is provided. The effect of the present invention is also effective as a configuration based on Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 59-138461 which discloses a configuration corresponding to the discharge unit. That is, whatever the form of the recording head is, according to the present invention, recording can be performed reliably and efficiently.
[0065]
Furthermore, the present invention can be effectively applied to a full-line type recording head having a length corresponding to the maximum width of a recording medium that can be recorded by the recording apparatus. As such a recording head, either a configuration satisfying the length by a combination of a plurality of recording heads or a configuration as a single recording head formed integrally may be used.
[0066]
In addition, even the serial type as shown in the above example can be connected to the main body of the recording head or attached to the main body of the device so that electrical connection with the main body of the device and ink supply from the main body are possible. The present invention is also effective when a replaceable chip type recording head or a cartridge type recording head in which an ink tank is integrally provided in the recording head itself is used.
[0067]
In addition, it is preferable to add a recording head ejection recovery means, a preliminary auxiliary means, and the like as the configuration of the recording apparatus of the present invention, since the effects of the present invention can be further stabilized. Specifically, heating is performed using a capping unit, a cleaning unit, a pressurizing or suction unit, an electrothermal transducer, a heating element different from this, or a combination thereof. Examples thereof include a preliminary heating unit for performing the discharge and a preliminary discharge unit for performing discharge different from the recording.
[0068]
Also, regarding the type or number of recording heads to be mounted, for example, a plurality of recording heads corresponding to a plurality of inks having different recording colors and densities are provided in addition to one provided corresponding to a single color ink. May be used. That is, for example, the recording mode of the recording apparatus is not limited to the recording mode of only the mainstream color such as black, but may be configured by integrally configuring the recording head or by combining a plurality of colors. Alternatively, the present invention is extremely effective for an apparatus having at least one of full-color recording modes by color mixing.
[0069]
In addition, in the embodiments of the present invention described above, the ink is described as a liquid. However, ink that is solidified at room temperature or lower and that softens or liquefies at room temperature may be used. In the ink jet method, the temperature of the ink itself is generally adjusted within a range of 30 ° C. or higher and 70 ° C. or lower to control the temperature of the ink so that it is in the stable discharge range. A liquid material may be used. In addition, it is solidified and heated in an untreated state in order to actively prevent the temperature rise caused by thermal energy from being used as the energy for changing the state of the ink from the solid state to the liquid state, or to prevent the ink from evaporating. You may use the ink which liquefies by. In any case, by applying thermal energy according to the application of thermal energy according to the recording signal, the ink is liquefied and liquid ink is ejected, or when it reaches the recording medium, it already starts to solidify. The present invention can also be applied to the case where ink having a property of being liquefied for the first time is used. The ink in such a case is in a state of being held as a liquid or a solid in a porous sheet recess or through-hole as described in JP-A-54-56847 or JP-A-60-71260. Alternatively, the electrothermal converter may be opposed to the electrothermal converter. In the present invention, the most effective one for each of the above-described inks is to execute the above-described film boiling method.
[0070]
In addition, the ink jet recording apparatus according to the present invention may be used as an image output terminal of an information processing device such as a computer, a copying apparatus combined with a reader, or a facsimile apparatus having a transmission / reception function. The thing etc. may be sufficient.
[0071]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, the present invention detects a voltage change between a recording element and a driving element that occurs in response to driving of the recording element through ink, and thereby detects the detection result and the amount of ink present. From the relationship, the ink in the recording head can be detected with a very simple configuration, and can be widely applied to various recording methods.
