BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an illumination device for illuminating a liquid crystal display element and other spatial light modulation devices, and a projection device that projects an image using the spatial light modulation device and the illumination device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
For example, in the illumination device disclosed in Patent Document 1 below, after passing light from a lamp light source such as a high-pressure mercury lamp through a pair of array lenses, P-polarized light is transmitted and emitted by a polarization beam splitter array and S-polarized light is emitted. Reflect and emit. At this time, the P-polarized light transmitted and emitted through the polarizing beam splitter array is converted into S-polarized light by the wave plate provided on the exit surface, but the S-polarized light reflected and emitted by the polarizing beam splitter array is converted into the wave plate. Is not allowed to pass through, so that the polarization state is maintained. Thereby, only the S-polarized light passes through the polarization beam splitter array. The S-polarized light thus obtained enters the liquid crystal display element through a condenser lens or the like, and efficiently illuminates the liquid crystal display element.
[0003]
Further, in the illumination device disclosed in Patent Document 2 below, a spherical reflecting mirror in which light from a lamp light source is collimated and P-polarized light is transmitted and emitted by a pair of prisms and the like and S-polarized light is disposed behind the lamp light source. Return to etc. At this time, the S-polarized light reflected by the prism is converted into P-polarized light while reciprocating between the spherical reflecting mirror and a wave plate provided between the prism and the spherical reflecting mirror. As a result, light from the lamp light source can be converted into only P-polarized light and allowed to pass through a pair of prisms and the like. The P-polarized light thus obtained enters the liquid crystal display element through a condenser lens or the like, and efficiently illuminates the liquid crystal display element.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the former illumination device, a pair of array lenses increases the coupling efficiency of light from the lamps incident on the polarization beam splitter array, so that the array lens processed with relatively high accuracy is compared with the polarization beam splitter array. This requires a precise arrangement, resulting in a complicated light source structure and increased costs.
[0005]
In the latter illuminating device, the light from the light source cannot be made sufficiently uniform, and the size of the light source is easily increased by the prism and the optical system at the subsequent stage.
[0006]
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide an illumination device that can generate specific polarized light with high efficiency and purity by using a polarization conversion element having a relatively simple structure.
[0007]
Further, the present invention can generate specific polarized light by using a polarization conversion element having a simple structure, and can easily achieve uniform illumination light when generating such polarized light. An object is to provide an apparatus.
[0008]
Another object of the present invention is to provide a projection apparatus that can easily and efficiently illuminate and can project a high-quality image by incorporating such an illumination apparatus.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above problems, an illumination device according to the present invention reflects a part of light that has passed through a light source that generates illumination light, a light mixing unit that mixes light from the light source, and the light mixing unit, A polarization conversion element that transmits the remaining light and converts it into polarized light in a specific direction, and a light feedback unit that returns reflected light from the polarization conversion element to the polarization conversion element again. Here, the “light mixing means” can perform light mixing by, for example, dividing the light from a point-like or planar light source into wavefronts and superimposing the light thus divided.
[0010]
In the illumination device, since the light from the light source is mixed by the light mixing means, it is possible to improve the uniformity of the luminance of the illumination light emitted from the device and the distribution of the emission angles. Furthermore, since the reflected light from the polarization conversion element is returned again to the polarization conversion element by the light feedback means, the conversion efficiency to the polarized light by the polarization conversion element can be increased, and the illumination light from the light source can be used efficiently. In addition, heat generation in the subsequent polarizing element or the like can be reduced. As a result, uniform polarized light can be generated efficiently.
[0011]
Moreover, in the specific aspect of the said illuminating device, a light mixing means is a rod integrator. In this case, uniform wavefront division and mixing can be performed with a low loss by a simple optical element.
[0012]
In another specific aspect of the illumination device, the light mixing unit is a light confinement type rod integrator that also serves as a light feedback unit. In this case, it is possible to perform uniform wavefront division and mixing with low loss while efficiently converting to polarized light by the polarization conversion element with a simple optical element.
[0013]
In another specific aspect of the illumination device, the light mixing means is a fly eye integrator. In this case, extremely uniform wavefront division and mixing are possible with low loss.
[0014]
In another specific aspect of the illumination device, the light feedback means is a concave reflecting mirror that collects the illumination light emitted from the light source. In this case, since the reflected light from the polarization conversion element is returned to the polarization conversion element again while condensing the illumination light, it is possible to align the distribution of the emission angle of the illumination light within a certain range while improving the use efficiency of the illumination light. it can.
[0015]
In another specific aspect of the illumination device, the polarization conversion elements are arranged adjacent to the plurality of first polarization separation sections arranged in an array and the plurality of first polarization separation sections. And a plurality of second polarization separation units for emitting polarized light in a specific direction reflected by the plurality of first polarization separation units to the opposite side of the light source, and a light source side surface of the plurality of second polarization separation units. A reflection member; and a wave plate formed on a side surface opposite to the light source in any one of the plurality of first polarization separation units and the plurality of second polarization separation units. Here, the “first polarization separation unit” can be configured by a polarization beam splitter or the like that incorporates a polarization separation film that separates SP polarized light. In this case, highly polarized P-polarized light or S-polarized light can be obtained by the array of polarized light separating portions.
[0016]
In another specific aspect of the illumination device, the polarization conversion element is a wire grid polarization element. In this case, P-polarized light or S-polarized light can be obtained by a simple optical element.
[0017]
Further, in another specific aspect of the illumination device, the polarization conversion element includes a plurality of first polarization separation units arranged in an array at predetermined intervals in the short side direction, and each first polarization separation. And a plurality of second polarization separation units for reflecting polarized light in a specific direction reflected by each first polarization separation unit to the light source side. In this case, highly polarized P-polarized light or S-polarized light can be obtained by the array of polarized light separating portions.
[0018]
In another specific aspect of the illumination device, a wave plate for changing a polarization state of reflected light from the polarization conversion element is further provided between the polarization conversion element and the light feedback means. In this case, when the polarized light reflected by the polarization conversion element is returned to the polarization conversion element again by the optical feedback means, it can be converted into polarized light that can be transmitted through the polarization conversion element. Efficient removal is possible.
[0019]
A first projection device according to the present invention includes the above-described illumination device, a spatial light modulation device illuminated by illumination light from the illumination device, and a projection optical system that projects image light from the spatial light modulation device. Is provided. Here, the “spatial light modulation device” is an optical device typified by, for example, a liquid crystal light valve, and has a concept including a digital mirror device and the like.
[0020]
In the first projection device, since the spatial light modulation device is illuminated using the above-described illumination device, uniform polarized light can be efficiently generated, and a high-quality image can be projected by an inexpensive device. it can.
[0021]
Further, a second projection device according to the present invention includes a plurality of image forming units for each color each having the above-described illumination device and a spatial light modulation device illuminated by illumination light from the illumination device, and a plurality of images. A light combining member that combines and emits image light from the forming unit, and a projection optical system that projects the image light combined through the light combining member.
[0022]
In the second projection apparatus, since the spatial light modulation apparatus is illuminated using the above-described illumination apparatus, uniform polarized light can be efficiently generated for each color, and a high-quality color image can be generated by an inexpensive apparatus. Can project.
