【0001】
【0003】
液晶表示方式としては、その代表的なものにTN(捩れネマチック)型、STN(超捩れネマチック)型、DS(動的光散乱)型、GH(ゲスト・ホスト)型あるいはFLC(強誘電性液晶)型等が知られているが、このうち現在最もよく用いられているのはTN型及びSTN型である。
【0004】
【0014】
さらにH.T.P.

【0118】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition containing at least one chiral dopant used in a sealed liquid crystal display cell formed of two substrates having transparent electrodes, a liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition, a primary The original periodic photonic crystal. More specifically, the present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition suitable for a simple matrix liquid crystal display element using two metastable state switching (bistable switching), a liquid crystal element using the liquid crystal composition, and the like.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Due to its excellent features (low voltage operation, low power consumption, thin display, usable even in bright places and not noticeable), liquid crystal elements can be used in watches, calculators, various measuring instruments, automotive panels, Widely used in word processors, electronic notebooks, printers, computers, televisions, etc.
[0003]
Typical liquid crystal display methods include TN (twisted nematic), STN (super twisted nematic), DS (dynamic light scattering), GH (guest / host), or FLC (ferroelectric liquid crystal). ) Type and the like are known, but the most commonly used of these are the TN type and the STN type.
[0004]
As the driving method, the conventional static driving to the multiplex driving are generally used, and a simple matrix method, and recently an active matrix method capable of high-definition display has been put into practical use. As the liquid crystal material used for the TN-type or STN-type liquid crystal display, a chiral nematic liquid crystal in which a small amount of an optically active liquid crystalline compound is added as a dopant to a nematic liquid crystal is usually used.
[0005]
The FLC-type liquid crystal phase belongs to a chiral chiral smectic phase, but is practically chiral smectic C (hereinafter referred to as “Sc”) having the lowest viscosity among them.*" ) Phase is most desirable. Sc*As a method for preparing a liquid crystal composition, Sc is mainly used.*A liquid crystal compound exhibiting a phase*Liquid crystal compound ". ) And a method of adding an optically active compound or composition as a chiral dopant to a liquid crystal composition showing an optically inactive Sc phase (hereinafter referred to as “Sc liquid crystal composition”). Sc liquid crystal composition is Sc*Since the viscosity is lower than that of the liquid crystal composition, the latter method is suitable for high-speed response and is general.
[0006]
The chiral dopant used in the TN-type, STN-type, and FLC-type liquid crystal displays is not necessarily liquid crystalline or Sc.*It is not necessary to show a phase, but when added to a liquid crystal composition, those that do not lower the transition point are preferred, and those that can induce spontaneous polarization with as little addition as possible reduce the viscosity as a liquid crystal composition This is convenient for speeding up the response.
[0007]
In order to construct such a chiral dopant, not only an optically active compound known so far is sufficient, but a compound capable of exhibiting stronger spontaneous polarization has been desired.
[0008]
In addition, a helical one-dimensional periodic structure such as a chiral nematic phase or a chiral smectic phase can take a one-dimensional photonic band structure. Low-threshold laser oscillation has been reported by photoexcitation in which a small amount of coumarin 500, which is a fluorescent dye, is added to such a liquid crystal (2002 Proceedings of the Joint Conference on Applied Physics, P1276).
[0009]
At that time, the helical pitch of the chiral nematic phase or the chiral smectic phase must be in the submicron order.
A method for maintaining the display quality by adding an optically active substance to the liquid crystal composition to suppress the reverse twist of the liquid crystal molecules to give the liquid crystal molecules a clockwise or counterclockwise helical structure is a well-known means. H. Torsional force of optically active substance added as chiral component T.A. P. (100 ・ μm-1·mass%-1) Is defined by the following formula (I) using the addition concentration “c (mass%)” and pitch “P (μm)”.
[0010]
[Expression 1]
[0011]
For example, a pitch required for a bistable switching liquid crystal display element is P <4 μm, and a characteristic required for a one-dimensional periodic photonic crystal element is P <1 μm, which is shorter.
[0012]
Therefore, this H.P. T.A. P. If it is small, it is necessary to add the chiral component at a considerably high concentration in order to obtain the required pitch, which adversely affects other material parameters.
[0013]
For example, smectic-nematic phase transition point TSNBecomes extremely high, and the temperature range in which voltage driving is possible becomes narrow. Further, since the concentration of the chiral component is high, the viscosity of the chiral-nematic liquid crystal composition increases, and as a result, the response speed increases.
[0014]
Further H. T.A. P. When using a chiral component with a small pitch, the temperature dependence of the pitch tends to increase as the temperature rises, and the temperature range that can be driven with voltage is narrowed, and it is short enough for applications that induce photonic bands. The pitch cannot be obtained. As described above, although the liquid crystal composition has been intensively studied for various purposes, the current situation is that a new improvement is always required.
[0015]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The present invention has a low crystal-liquid crystal phase transition temperature useful as a component of a liquid crystal mixture for a display element even when a small amount is added as a component of a chiral dopant, and a liquid crystal-isotropic property when a chiral nematic phase is given. A liquid phase transition temperature is high, a sufficient helical pitch is induced, and its temperature dependence is low, and it is composed of a chemically stable chiral dopant, a liquid crystal compound containing the chiral dopant, and the composition. It is an object to provide a liquid crystal element, a one-dimensional periodic photonic crystal, and a low threshold laser oscillation element.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
As a result of intensive studies to solve the above problems, the present inventors have found that the above problems can be solved by including an optically active substance of a specific organometallic complex in a liquid crystal substance, and to complete the present invention. It came.

[0094]
In the present invention, the optically active organometallic complex for chiral dopant is used as a liquid crystal composition in combination with one or more of the host liquid crystals represented by the general formulas [H-1] and [H-2]. When used, it is preferable because high-speed response and retention characteristics in the temperature range of the Sc phase of the host liquid crystal appear remarkably.
[0095]
In order to obtain good contrast as a liquid crystal, it is necessary to form a monodomain cell with uniform alignment. Many methods have already been attempted for this purpose, but as a liquid crystal material, generally, a chiral nematic (N) is used during cooling from the isotropic liquid (I) phase.*) Via the phase, Sc*Phase or SAAfter the phase, Sc*A liquid crystal that undergoes a phase transition into a phase, and N*Phase and Sc*Phase, especially N*A long helical pitch in the phase is known to exhibit good orientation.
[0096]
In order to increase the helical pitch, it is only necessary to mix chiral compounds with opposite twist directions and use them as chiral dopants. However, care must be taken so that spontaneous polarization does not cancel out. .
[0097]
The compound represented by the general formula (1) is added to the liquid crystal composition in an amount of about 0.1% by mass to 20% by mass, preferably 0.3% by mass to less than 2% by mass. Thus, a liquid crystal composition in which a sufficiently short helical pitch is induced can be obtained.
[0098]
Thus, in the liquid crystal composition containing a small amount of the organometallic complex represented by the general formula (1), compared to a liquid crystal composition not containing the organometallic complex (containing other chiral components). In addition, since a helical pitch is sufficiently induced by adding a small amount, the increase in viscosity is suppressed, so that the response speed is increased and the temperature range in which voltage drive is possible is not narrowed.
[0099]
The liquid crystal composition of the present invention is used for the purpose of adjusting the threshold voltage, nematic range, Δn, dielectric anisotropy, viscosity, etc., in addition to the above compounds, according to the purpose of the liquid crystal display element used. Other compounds can be contained in an appropriate amount within a range that does not impair the purpose.
[0100]
The liquid crystal composition of the present invention is prepared by a conventional method. In general, a method is used in which various components are dissolved together at a high temperature. In addition, the liquid crystal composition of the present invention is optimized and optimized according to the intended use by appropriate additives. Such additives are well known to those skilled in the art and are described in detail in the literature.
[0101]
In addition, the liquid crystal composition of the present invention is for guest host (GH) mode by adding dichroic dyes such as merocyanine, styryl, azo, azomethine, azoxy, quinophthalone, anthraquinone and tetrazine. It can also be used as a liquid crystal composition.
[0102]
Alternatively, a liquid crystal composition for a polymer dispersed liquid crystal display element (PNLCD) represented by NCAP produced by encapsulating nematic liquid crystal or a polymer network liquid crystal display element (PNLCD) in which a three-dimensional network polymer is produced in the liquid crystal. It can also be used as a product.
[0103]
In addition, it can be used as a liquid crystal composition for birefringence control (ECB) mode and dynamic scattering (DS) mode.

【The invention's effect】
The optically active organometallic complex for a chiral dopant of the present invention is mixed with a base liquid crystal material as a chiral dopant to induce a chiral nematic phase or a chiral smectic C (Sc *) phase. Large spontaneous polarization can be induced.
[0118]
N can also be added in small amounts.*Since the helical pitch induced in the phase is sufficiently short and the temperature change is small, it can be used for TN liquid crystal, STN liquid crystal, etc. Depending on the selection of the side chain, it is possible to obtain a compound with a long pitch. .
[0119]
Furthermore, it can be used for ferroelectric liquid crystal compounds, and is extremely useful as a material for liquid crystal devices and the like, and since it is possible to easily reduce the helical pitch to 1 μm or less, a one-dimensional periodic photonic crystal. Can be applied as well, and is useful in a wide range of fields.
