Description
Ind.

The present invention relates generally to methods and compositions for cleaning polyethylene terephthalate containers. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method and composition for reducing haze and removing mold present in polyethylene terephthalate containers.
Background art
As with many industrial sectors, the demand for savings has also affected the beverage industry, resulting in substantial changes in beverage bottling, distribution and sales methods. The beverage industry has seen a shift from glass to plastic containers over the last decade. Plastic containers can be made from any type of material depending on the application. One such material is polyethylene terephthalate, so-called “PET”. There are two types of PET bottles that are generally used: bottles that are used only once and bottles that are used multiple times. A single use bottle is one that is filled, used, and discarded. Multi-use bottles are collected and reused and must be cleaned before being refilled.
PET bottles have several advantages over glass. Since PET bottles are lightweight, the fare can be reduced. If it falls on a hard surface, it will not break like glass and will generally not break. The wear caused by the packaging container conveyors is also reduced. After opening the bottle, the lid can usually be reused.
Disadvantages are that PET bottles are easily scratched and susceptible to chemical attack during cleaning. Further, the PET container cannot withstand a state of 60 ° C. or higher. When exposed to temperatures above 60 ° C., the bottle deforms and / or shrinks.
Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the reuse of PET containers and has allowed used containers to be used as new containers. Since the price of new resin is 50-75 cents per pound, it is economically attractive to reuse used bottles. Glass bottles for soft drinks are expected to disappear from the market. This further increases the importance of PET container processing.
Cleaning of the PET bottle is performed by a series of processes using an alkali hydroxide detergent immersion tank and a spray cleaning process in a bottle washer. In the cleaning tank, remove product residues, dirt, labels and labeling adhesives. Since the surface of the PET bottle is hydrophobic, it is difficult to clean the PET bottle as compared to the glass bottle. In addition, since the cleaning temperature is low, the chemical activity of the bottle cleaning liquid decreases.
Laufenberg et al., “Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Transporting Pet Returnables” (Blue Bev Ind. Inter. 1, 40-4 (0 ref. ) (Brew Bev. Ind. Int. 1, 40-4 (0 ref.) January 1992) touches upon two basic problems in PET bottle cleaning.
In this paper, the author gives an overview of how PET bottles are susceptible to alkali hydroxide erosion or cloudiness. The haze is due to chemical etching of the PET container surface by the cleaning agent present in the cleaning tank.
A particularly difficult problem affecting reusable PET bottles is the occurrence of mold in the returned bottles. It is extremely uneconomical to simply discard all bottles that cannot remove mold. In countries with a tropical climate, the rejection rate is 40-50% at some time of the year.
The required temperature for cleaning the PET bottle is 60 ° C. or lower corresponding to the glass transition temperature of PET. When the temperature is exceeded, the PET bottle deforms and contracts. The cleaning power of the bottle cleaning liquid at 60 ° C. is only a quarter of the cleaning power at 80 ° C. Bottles returned with the product remaining, that is, bottles that have not been rinsed, are mostly contaminated with microorganisms. The bottle washing liquid removes microorganisms such as bacteria, spores, molds and yeasts present in the bottle. However, at temperatures lowered to 60 ° C., mold is often a stubborn problem in cleaning and recycling PET bottles.
PET bottles cannot be cleaned as easily as glass. Glass bottles are usually washed at 80 ° C. Glass can also be cleaned using a relatively high concentration of cleaning agent. Glass can be cleaned using up to 5.0% caustic detergent, but in the case of PET containers, only 1.5% alkali hydroxide detergent will cause the container to become cloudy. In the case of glass, the cleaning temperature, cleaning agent concentration and cleaning time can be adjusted taking into account variability in the surrounding environment. In contrast, PET containers cannot withstand any of these high levels of variation.
Various other means have been proposed, such as reducing the level of alkaline hydroxide cleaner, but the industry still continues to allow for efficient cleaning of PET containers and multiple uses and methods. There is a demand for.
Brief Description of the Invention
The first aspect of the present invention is a method for cleaning a polyethylene terephthalate container. In the method, the first concentrate is combined with the second concentrate in an alkaline cleaning solution. The first concentrate contains about 0.3-25% by weight surfactant and about 5-30% by weight acid. The second concentrate contains about 8-60% by weight of builder. The method further includes contacting a PET container with the cleaning solution to minimize container fogging and remove contamination.
A further aspect of the present invention is a method for cleaning a polyethylene terephthalate container, which comprises contacting the container with an alkaline cleaning liquid having a temperature in the range of about 50 ° C to 60 ° C. The alkaline cleaning liquid is prepared from a first concentrate, a second concentrate, an alkaline source and conditioning water. The first concentrate contains an effective amount of a nonionic surfactant, a first builder, and an acid in providing a phase stable solution. The second concentrate includes a nonionic surfactant and a second builder. The first and second concentrates are present in the cleaning liquid at a concentration in the range of about 0.5-1.2% by weight, and the cloud point of the first nonionic surfactant is about 5 Within the range of ~ 60 ° C.
A further aspect of the present invention is an alkaline cleaning liquid for cleaning polyethylene terephthalate bottles. The cleaning solution contains about 1-5% by weight alkaline source, about 480-4000 ppm of builder, about 6-500 ppm of surfactant, and about 20-800 ppm of coupler.
The present invention is a composition and method for cleaning polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles that promotes mold removal and reduces haze. In addition to 1 to 3% by weight alkaline hydroxide (caustic) commonly used in PET bottle cleaning treatments, the compositions of the present invention contain surfactant and builder compounds that enhance cleaning and remove mold. To do.
In general, fogging is caused by chemical etching due to the cleaning agent present in the cleaning liquid. Haze refers to the clouding and dulling of the surface of the PET container and impairs the aesthetic properties of the container. Surprisingly, it has been found that the use of surfactants with appropriate cloud points can substantially reduce haze. It is preferable that the PET container treated with the cleaning liquid of the present invention is not substantially cloudy.
It has also been found that mold growth, particularly within the returned PET bottle, is an important issue in bottle cleaning. Even when a solution containing as much as 3% alkali hydroxide is used, it is very difficult to remove mold. Appropriate cleaning usually removes most of the organic components in the mold. However, mold residue may remain on the surface of the PET container. This can cause problems similar to water rot. This state provides clear test results with the methylene blue staining method (Industrial Code of Practice for Refillable PET Bottles, first edition (1993-1994, UNESCO / Cesda) (UNESDA / CESDA), page V-18) The compositions and methods of the present invention substantially remove organic and inorganic residues of soil and mold.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Composition
In general, the cleaning liquid of the present invention is prepared from two concentrated compositions. These two concentrated compositions are combined in an aqueous wash solution containing an alkaline source prior to use. These concentrated compositions generally contain builders such as surfactants, acids, sequestering agents and chelating agents, coupling agents and various other adjuvants.
A. Surfactant system
In general, the compositions of the present invention contain a surfactant to promote low foam cleaning and prevent fogging of PET containers. Any number of surfactants may be used according to the present invention, including nonionic surfactants, anionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants and mixtures thereof.
Nonionic surfactants include a wide variety of polymeric compounds. Specifically, but not limited to, ethoxylated alkylphenols, ethoxylated fatty alcohols, ethoxylated amines, ethoxylated ether amines, carboxylic acid esters, carboxylic acid amides, and polyoxyalkylene oxide block copolymers Can be mentioned.

B. acid
The composition of the present invention may include an acid source. The acid serves to stabilize the surfactant system prior to mixing in the wash solution to ensure that the concentrate is a phase stable solution. C. builder
The composition of the present invention may contain a builder. Builders, i.e., sequestering agents and chelating agents, prevent the sedimentation of scales on the side walls of PET containers and on bottle washers. Builders also promote soil suspension in the cleaning process, bind hard ions, and in turn enhance cleaning. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the first concentrate may contain a first builder, and the second concentrate may contain a second builder.
Builders that can be used in accordance with the present invention include, among others, sequestering agents such as phosphonates, phosphinic esters, acrylates and polyacrylates, and polycarboxylates. The builder present in either concentrate may be a chelating agent. Unlike sequestering agents, chelating agents tend to bind alkaline earth metals present in the cleaning solution and retain these compounds in solution. Mold is thought to use the organic part of nutrients, leaving inorganic salts. As a result, it is frequently shown that mold is not effectively removed by inorganic salts remaining on the surface of the PET container. The chelating agent removes these inorganic salts found under mold.
The number of bonds that a chelating agent can form on one hard ion is labeled as a bidentate (2), tridentate (3), or tetradentate (4). It is expressed by doing. Any number of chelating agents may be used according to the present invention. Representative chelating agents include aminocarboxylic acid salts, phosphonates, and water-soluble acrylic polymers, among others.

In the compositions and methods of the present invention, added nonionic surfactants, such as those disclosed in Schmitt et al. US Pat. No. 5,516,451, incorporated herein by reference. Any number of other adjuvants such as a defoaming agent may be used. Among other components, tracking compounds such as potassium iodide, colorants and dyes, fragrances, and preservatives are also useful in the present invention.
how to use
The method of the present invention enhances the cleaning effectiveness, dirt, inorganic salts and mold removal of PET containers while preventing fogging of the containers. This effect is obtained by preparing a first acidic concentrate having a high concentration of surfactant and another second concentrate having a high concentration of builder.
According to an aspect of the present invention, the first and second concentrates may be incompatible with each other as long as they are mixed separately from the cleaning liquid. The incompatibility here is due to the different pH requirements of two different concentrates. The first concentrate generally has an acidic pH of less than about 2 to maintain the solubility of the surfactant system. The pH of the second concentrate is selected such that the builder is completely dissolved and is generally alkaline. Depending on the pH, the surfactant system or builder may cause phase separation when the two concentrates are combined prior to dilution with the wash solution.
In use, the two concentrates are combined in an alkaline cleaning system to provide suitable building efficacy and enhance cleaning effectiveness. The concentration range of each of the two concentrates is illustratively shown below.
In use, about 0.1 to 0.8% by weight, preferably about 0.2 to 0.3% by weight of the first concentrate and about 0.2 to 1.2% by weight, preferably about 0.4 to The system is diluted in a wash solution containing 0.8% by weight of the second concentrate. The ratio of the first concentrate to the second concentrate in the alkaline cleaning liquid is generally about 0.1: 0.5 to 0.1: 1.0, preferably about 0.1: 0.2 to 0.15: Within the range of 0.3. Generally, the alkaline cleaning liquid contains about 0.3 to 2.0% by weight, preferably about 0.5 to 1.2% by weight of both Concentrate 1 and Concentrate 2.
According to one preferred embodiment of the invention, the cleaning solution contains at least about 1000 ppm EDTA, at least about 5 ppm phosphonate compound, and at least about 100 ppm gluconate compound.
Cleaning of PET containers is generally performed through a number of processes. Empty the PET container, pre-rinse and soak in the cleaning solution. The cleaning liquid generally has a cleaning agent (NaOH) of approximately 1.0 to 5% by weight, preferably 1.5 to 3% by weight. Concentrate 1 and concentrate 2 applied to the PET container are mixed into this system. Washing tends to be performed over a time period in the range of about 7-20 minutes. The washing temperature is about 59 ° C. ± 1 ° C. The container then goes through a weak detergent process. In the process, water is flowing into the tank to reduce the caustic soda concentration, continue washing and start rinsing. The detergent concentration can be maintained by a conductivity controller. The container then passes through at least three rinsing steps in order to rinse the container with hot water and cold water in turn. The final rinse is done with drinking water, after which the container is placed upright, inspected and filled.
Example
The following use examples illustrate the invention without limiting it.
Example 1
As detailed, various compositions were used to study haze. Shown in Table 2 below are examples tested with the addition of other compositions listed in Table 3.
Chemical hazing was investigated using strips of PET (0.5 "x 2") cut from amorphous (low crystallinity) PET sheets. The strips were immersed in approximately 200 mL of a 2.8% alkali hydroxide solution containing various amounts of additives to be tested. The solution was vibrated at 100 rpm in a water bath for 24-72 hours while maintaining the temperature at 58-60 ° C. The degree of haze / wash was assessed visually and gravimetrically using water (cloud rating 0) and 2.8% detergent solution (cloud rating 10) as references.
[Table 3]
The haze was measured with respect to a standard in which no cloudiness such as water was 0 and 2.8% alkali hydroxide was 10. Similar to the series of experiments performed on Sample 1A, Samples 1C and 1D were very useful in preventing these compositions from fogging, whether used alone or with sequestering agents. Proved effective.
Example 2
A secondary analysis for haze was performed using the method of Use Example 1 using 100 ppm of each active substance (samples 2A-2W) and 2.8% by weight NaOH (excluding controls) in the wash water. The results are shown in Table 4.
[Table 4]
Example 3
A test panel (about 2 ″ × 3 ″) was made by cutting dirty bottles from the field. Stir in a 1000 mL solution for 10 minutes (500 rpm), then rinse with water for 1 minute (8 psi nozzle spray, top down) and perform a wash test. Industrial Code of Practice for Refillable PET Bottles using the methylene blue staining method (First Edition (UNESDA / CESDA. 1993-1994), Page V- The soil level was evaluated before and after washing according to 18) The above process was repeated every 10 minutes for repeated washings of 20 and 30 minutes, and the washing solution was 2.8% by weight alkali hydroxide, 0 Includes 6% by weight of sample 1B and various amounts of sample 1A as described in Table 5A below. The four data were used as statistical averages, the data being comprehensively cleaned / washed As recorded.
The above specification, examples and data provide a complete description of the manufacture and use of the composition of the invention. Since the invention can take many embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, the invention resides in the claims hereinafter appended.
