そのため、従来用いられてきたO―Band(波長帯域1260nm〜1360nm)、C―Band(波長帯域1530nm〜1565nm)以外の波長帯域でも利用可能な光ファイバの開発が進められている。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a single mode optical fiber for optical communication and a loss evaluation method thereof, and in particular, a transmission loss evaluation method in a wavelength band of 1380 nm band, a transmission loss is small in a wavelength band of 1380 nm band, and excellent in hydrogen resistance. The present invention relates to a single mode optical fiber.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Along with an increase in demand for communication capacity, wavelength multiplexing transmission technology for transmitting light of many wavelengths to one optical fiber is important. Therefore, development of an optical fiber that can be used in a wavelength band other than the conventionally used O-Band (wavelength band 1260 nm to 1360 nm) and C-Band (wavelength band 1530 nm to 1565 nm) is in progress.
A normal optical fiber has a large transmission loss in the 1380 nm band because of a small amount of OH groups in its structure. Therefore, if OH groups in the optical fiber can be reduced, optical transmission in a wider wavelength band becomes possible.
JP-A-11-171575 reports that the loss in the 1385 nm band caused by the presence of OH groups can be reduced by controlling the core / deposition cladding ratio of the core rod within a predetermined range.
The structure of quartz glass, which is an optical fiber material, has a network structure in which SiO 4 is randomly bonded three-dimensionally. If impurities or defects exist in the structure, new bonds are generated. Annihilation occurs, which causes light absorption. Of this light absorption, the loss in the 1380 nm band is attributed to OH groups present in the quartz glass. Therefore, the greater the amount of OH groups contained, the greater the transmission loss in the 1380 nm band.
[0003]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
By utilizing the method disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 11-171575, an optical fiber having a loss in the 1385 nm band of less than 0.33 dB / km can be manufactured.
However, even if this method is used, when hydrogen diffuses from the external environment of the optical fiber, the loss increase in the 1380 nm band is not necessarily suppressed to a small level. The mechanism of this loss can be explained as follows.
In the drawing process of the optical fiber, Si—O—Si in the quartz glass structure is cut by the reaction shown in the formula (1).
[Chemical 1]
Bonding defects between silicon and oxygen (hereinafter referred to as “defects”) expressed as Si—O. Produced at this time cause light absorption in the 630 nm band, but depending on the drawing conditions, Si—O. It reacts with the diffused hydrogen to form a new bond represented by the formula (2).
[Chemical 2]
However, when the drawing speed is high, that is, when the optical fiber is cooled earlier than the reaction according to the equation (2) occurs, Si—O · remains in the optical fiber without reacting with hydrogen. End up. In the remaining Si—O., When hydrogen diffuses again from the outside, Si—OH is generated by the reaction shown in the equation (2).
That is, even if the loss in the 1380 nm band is small during the production of the optical fiber, depending on the drawing conditions, the loss in the 1380 nm band may increase when hydrogen diffuses from the outside.
[0004]
When the loss increase in the 1380 nm band becomes 0.1 dB / km or more due to such hydrogen diffusion, the increase in loss in the wavelength band before and after the 1380 nm band, that is, the spread of the loss becomes remarkable. For this reason, when an optical fiber is used over a long period of time, transmission loss deteriorates with time, and optical transmission in a wide wavelength band becomes impossible.
Regarding the relationship between the increase in loss in the 630 nm band due to the generation of Si—O. And the increase in loss in the 1380 nm band due to hydrogen diffusion, there has been a qualitative discussion on the mechanism of defect generation. However, a quantitative standard for suppressing an increase in loss in the 1380 nm band due to hydrogen diffusion has not been clarified. Furthermore, since the loss at 630 nm is not discussed as a loss due to the defect itself minus the loss inherent in quartz glass such as Rayleigh scattering, the difference due to manufacturing conditions could not be distinguished.
In addition, as a method for evaluating the loss increase in the 1380 nm band due to hydrogen diffusion, a method called a hydrogen test in which an optical fiber having a certain length is exposed to hydrogen for a long time has been taken. According to this method, It took a long time and there was a problem in terms of cost.
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and provides a loss evaluation method for a single mode optical fiber in the wavelength region of 1380 nm band. By using this loss evaluation method, loss increase due to hydrogen diffusion is provided. An object of the present invention is to provide a single mode optical fiber capable of reducing the above.
[0005]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the invention described in claim 1 is a loss evaluation method for a single mode optical fiber made of quartz glass. In the loss evaluation method, loss due to Rayleigh scattering, loss due to structural irregularity of the optical fiber material, loss due to ultraviolet absorption, The quartz obtained from the total loss value in the short wavelength region of the optical fiber consisting of losses due to defects in the structure, excluding the loss due to the Rayleigh scattering, the loss due to the structural irregularity of the optical fiber material, and the loss due to the ultraviolet absorption. Loss increase in the 1380 nm wavelength band caused by hydrogen diffusion into the quartz glass, based on the loss increase in the wavelength 630 nm band caused by the bond defect between silicon and oxygen in the quartz glass, after subtracting the loss inherent in the glass This is a loss evaluation method for a single mode optical fiber characterized by evaluating the minute.
As a result, the correlation between the loss increase obtained by subtracting the loss inherent to quartz glass in the wavelength 630 nm band caused by bond defects and the loss increase in the wavelength 1380 nm band caused by hydrogen diffusion into the quartz glass results in the 1380 nm wavelength band. The amount of increase in loss can be accurately evaluated.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, in the loss evaluation method for a single mode optical fiber according to the first aspect, a glass preform is formed by attaching a second cladding to a quartz rod composed of a core and a first cladding. Short wavelength of optical fiber consisting of loss due to Rayleigh scattering, loss due to structural irregularity of optical fiber material, loss due to ultraviolet absorption, loss due to defects in structure of single mode optical fiber formed by spinning this glass preform The total loss value in the region is obtained by subtracting the loss due to the Rayleigh scattering, the loss due to the structural irregularity of the optical fiber material, and the loss due to the ultraviolet absorption, and subtracting the loss inherent in the quartz glass from a wavelength of 630 nm. After measuring the loss, the single mode optical fiber is exposed to hydrogen to measure the loss at the wavelength of 1380 nm. And performing loss evaluation of single-mode optical fiber by.
[0008]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail.
FIG. 1 shows a cross section in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of a glass preform for producing a single mode optical fiber of the present invention.
In FIG. 1, reference numeral 1 denotes a core that is a high refractive index portion, and
The quartz rod composed of the core 1 and the
The
The glass preform is spun using a spinning device to produce an optical fiber. Light with a wavelength of 630 nm is incident on the obtained optical fiber, and the loss in the 630 nm band is measured.
[0009]
The loss in the short wavelength region of the optical fiber includes a loss due to Rayleigh scattering, a loss due to structural irregularity of the optical fiber material, a loss due to ultraviolet absorption, and a loss due to defects in the structure, and can be expressed as in equation (3).
[Expression 1]
In the equation (3), the first term is a loss due to Rayleigh scattering, the second term is a loss due to structural irregularity, the third term is a loss due to ultraviolet absorption, and the fourth term is a loss due to defects.
In equation (3), λ is the wavelength, w is the GeO 2 concentration [wt%], and K UV and C UV are constants.
FIG. 2 illustrates the loss of the optical fiber. In FIG. 2, the straight line 1 is the sum of the loss due to Rayleigh scattering and the loss due to structural irregularity, and the curve 1 is the loss due to Rayleigh scattering and the loss due to structural irregularity. And the loss due to ultraviolet absorption.
[0010]
In this way, from the measured total loss value, the loss increase due to the presence of defects in the 630 nm band is obtained by excluding the loss due to Rayleigh scattering, the loss due to structural irregularity, and the loss due to ultraviolet absorption.
Thereafter, this optical fiber is exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere, and the loss increase in the 1380 nm band is measured. FIG. 3 shows the results of measurement after exposure for 10 days in a hydrogen atmosphere at room temperature and 0.01 atm.
As can be seen from FIG. 3, in order for the loss increase due to hydrogen diffusion in the 1380 nm band to be 0.1 dB / km or less, the loss increase due to defects in the 630 nm band needs to be 4 dB / km or less. Become. Furthermore, in order for the increase in loss due to hydrogen diffusion in the 1380 nm band to be less than 0.05 dB / km, which is a more preferable value, the increase in loss due to defects in the 630 nm band needs to be 2 dB / km or less. Become. If the loss increase due to hydrogen diffusion in the 1380 nm band is 0.1 dB / km or less, even in a normal optical fiber cable installation environment, even if the loss increases due to hydrogen diffusion due to the external environment, the loss is increased. be able to.
On the other hand, if the loss increase due to defects in the 630 nm band is 4 dB / km or more, the loss increase due to hydrogen diffusion in the 1380 nm band exceeds 0.1 dB / km, which is not preferable for use.
[0011]
According to the loss evaluation method of the single mode optical fiber of this example, the wavelength of 1380 nm generated by hydrogen diffusion into the silica glass based on the loss increase in the wavelength 630 nm band caused by the bond defect between silicon and oxygen in the silica glass. By evaluating the increase in loss in the band, it is possible to evaluate the loss by shortening the length of the optical fiber used as the measurement sample, and it is possible to evaluate the loss of the single mode optical fiber in a short time and at low cost. Become.
In addition, according to the single mode optical fiber of this example, hydrogen diffusion into the quartz glass can be achieved by setting the loss increase in the wavelength 630 nm band caused by the bond defect between silicon and oxygen in the quartz glass to 4 dB / km or less. The increase in loss in the wavelength 1380 nm band caused by the above can be reduced to 0.1 dB / km or less, and a single-mode optical fiber with a guaranteed quality can be provided by a simple loss evaluation method.
Further, by increasing the loss increase in the wavelength 630 nm band caused by the bond defect between silicon and oxygen in the quartz glass to 2 dB / km or less, the loss increase in the wavelength 1380 nm band caused by hydrogen diffusion into the quartz glass. Can be set to 0.05 dB / km or less, and a single mode optical fiber having more preferable quality can be provided by a simple loss evaluation method.
[0012]
