Description
【0001】
【0009】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition used for a liquid crystal display device, and more specifically, an active compound comprising a specific alkylfluorobenzene compound and a (fluoro) benzene compound having an allyloxy group, having a large Δε and a reduced driving voltage. The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition suitable for use in a matrix driving system or a liquid crystal composition excellent in steepness useful for an STN type.
[0002]
[Prior Art and Problems to be Solved by the Invention]
Liquid crystal display elements are widely used in watches, calculators, various measuring instruments, automobile panels, word processors, electronic notebooks, printers, computers, mobile phones, televisions, and the like. These liquid crystal display elements utilize the optical anisotropy (Δn) and dielectric anisotropy (Δε) of the liquid crystal compound, and display methods include dynamic scattering type (DS type), guest Host type (GH type), twisted nematic type (TN type), super twisted nematic type (STN type), thin film transistor type (TFT type), ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) and the like are known. As the driving method, a static driving method, a time division driving method, an active matrix driving method, a dual frequency driving method, and the like are known. Of these, the active matrix driving method is particularly attracting attention because of its high display performance.
[0003]
Among the above active matrix driving methods, the OCB liquid crystal material, the field sequential driving TN liquid crystal material, and the IPS liquid crystal material need to lower the driving voltage in order to reduce power consumption and increase the screen size. In order to be used in small and light portable notebook PCs, mobile phones, etc., it is necessary to be able to operate at a lower voltage on the drive power supply surface. The drive voltage in the TN mode, particularly the threshold voltage (V th ), is a function of Δε as shown in the following equation.
[0004]
[Expression 1]
[0005]
As is clear from the above formula, a compound exhibiting a large Δε is necessary for reducing the power consumption.
[0006]
In order to meet such a demand, various liquid crystal compositions for active matrix driving systems have been studied so far, and many liquid crystal compounds used here have been developed. Japanese Patent Publication No. 1-38772 and Japanese Patent Publication No. 63-44132 disclose (di) fluorobenzene derivatives. Although the liquid crystal compound alone has low viscosity, there are problems that the NI point is low, Δε is small, and the driving voltage is high. Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 10-298120 discloses an alkynylbicyclohexyl fluorofluorobenzene derivative. There was a problem that the NI point was low and the viscosity was high. Further, JP-A-3-27340 discloses a fluorobenzene compound having an allyloxy group, and specifically has a 4-fluorophenyl, 2,3-difluorophenyl or 3,4-difluorophenyl group. There was no specific example regarding the fluorobenzene compound having a 3,4,5-trifluorophenyl group.
[0007]
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to maintain a high NI point as a liquid crystal composition for an active matrix driving system, while having a large Δε and a low driving voltage, or a liquid crystal composition excellent in steepness useful for an STN type Is to provide.
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present inventors have found that a liquid crystal composition containing a specific alkylfluorobenzene compound and a specific allyloxy group-containing (fluoro) benzene compound as essential components can achieve the above-mentioned object, and has reached the present invention. .
[0009]
That is, in the present invention, 1 to 95 parts by mass of the compound represented by the following general formula (1) and 1 to 30 parts by mass of the compound represented by the following general formula (2) are essential components in 100 parts by mass of the liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition contained as is provided.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, the liquid crystal composition of the present invention will be described in detail.
