Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a display data generation method for a display device including two chiral nematic liquid crystal display elements, and a display data generation device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, image display devices such as a cathode ray tube, a liquid crystal display element (LCD), an electroluminescence display element (EL), and a plasma display (PD) are known. In the LCD, TN, STN, TFT liquid crystal, etc. are widely used. In particular, the TFT liquid crystal is also used in display devices for notebook personal computers and televisions.
[0003]
In LCDs, color display is generally performed, and 256 colors, 4K colors, and even 65K colors are displayed. So-called true color display is practically possible, and color display approaching that of a cathode ray tube has become possible.
[0004]
As the display image data, there is a BMP (bitmap) system. Since the data is configured in units of dots, it is suitable for a dot matrix display system such as an LCD. Further, in a dot matrix type LCD, RGB color filters are arranged corresponding to each pixel to perform full color display.
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]

[0017]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
FIG. 1 shows an example of a flowchart of the present invention.
[0018]
The information processing apparatus means a combination of a general-purpose computer, a memory circuit, and other peripheral circuits. For example, a network terminal, a desktop computer, a notebook computer, a handheld computer, a palmtop computer, or the like can be used.
[0019]
The memory refers to a RAM or a hard disk built in the information processing apparatus. Alternatively, an electronic storage medium supplied from the outside, such as a floppy (registered trademark) disk, an external hard disk, Zip, MO (magneto-optical disk), MD, PD (phase change disk), CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, large-capacity floppy (registered trademark) disk, memory card, RAM card, and the like. A portable electronic storage medium is preferable because it is easy to handle. In particular, those of 100 MB or more that can accommodate a large amount of image information with a large capacity are preferable.
[0020]
Data including image information means image data such as BMP, TIF, GIF, and JPEG standards. In particular, in the present invention, it is preferable to use a BMP (bitmap) image composed of pixels having color information.
[0021]
Reading the image information of the original image means transferring display data stored in the memory in advance to the main memory or cache memory of the information processing apparatus or a virtual memory such as a hard disk, or scanning the printed matter etc. This means that the converted image information is stored in the main memory or the like. In particular, when processing is performed at high speed, it is preferably transferred to a cache memory.
[0022]
[0023]
In this way, the more configured into two chiral nematic liquid crystal display element which has a color produced by the selective reflection is substantially complementary colors, color on the back side of the back-side substrate of the non-viewer-side panel of the four colors In a chiral nematic liquid crystal display device having a colored layer, which is one of the above, display data of two types of panels can be synthesized in advance, and display data can be created so that a desired image display can be confirmed.
[0024]
[0025]
As a communication technology, non-wire communication means is used, and infrared communication, wireless communication, cordless telephone system using weak radio waves, PHS and Bluetooth (registered trademark) , wireless LAN, and the like can be used. In the present invention, it is particularly preferable to use Bluetooth.
[0026]
[0027]
A display device having a memory-like display mode is used for a display device that generates display data according to the present invention. The memory property means a property in which display information can be held in a state where the drive voltage is substantially 0 V or without being continuously driven. Examples of the display element having a memory display mode include a cholesteric or chiral nematic liquid crystal display element (hereinafter referred to as CL-LCD) or an antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element (hereinafter referred to as AF-LCD). In particular, in the present invention, it is essential to use a CL-LCD capable of reducing power consumption.
[0028]
The CL-LCD has a phase transition type operation. The phase transition type is stable in at least two states of a planar state (hereinafter referred to as a PL state) that selectively reflects a part of incident light and a focal conic state (hereinafter referred to as an FC state) that scatters incident light. By applying a predetermined voltage between the electrodes, the liquid crystal can be changed to the PL state or the FC state.
[0029]
FIG. 2 schematically shows a cross-sectional structure of a display device 11 in which two chiral nematic liquid

[0034]
Furthermore, in the CL-LCD, a predetermined voltage may be applied again in order to shift the held display state to another display state. At that time, it is preferable to erase the entire display surface once and then apply a voltage necessary for the next display.
[0035]
That is, from the viewpoint of use, it is preferable that the previous display is completely erased and then rewritten with a new display. Normally, the entire display surface is placed in the PL state, the selective reflection color is drawn, the FC state is placed in a slightly scattered state, and the matte color (black paint) on the back side is displayed for display. (See JP 2001-337314 A). Moreover, the color of this colored layer can be changed as appropriate in accordance with a desired display. The color of the colored layer may be selected in consideration of the combination with selective reflection coloring by each liquid crystal display element.
[0036]
Next, a method for manufacturing the CL-LCD will be described. The basic configuration of the CL-LCD, the alignment film provided on the inner surface of the cell, the driving method, and the like are shown in Japanese Patent Application Nos. 2001-388566 and 2001-105283 by the present applicant.
[0037]
The CL-LCD can be manufactured as follows. First, two substrates with a transparent conductive film made of ITO are prepared, etched to have a maximum interval of 10 μm, and about 160 stripe electrodes are arranged on each substrate. Then, after forming an electrical insulating layer on the electrode forming surface side of each substrate, a polyimide resin solution is applied and baked to form an alignment film.
[0038]
As an example, the surface of the alignment film can be used as it is without being rubbed. These two substrates are arranged so that the respective stripe electrodes are orthogonal to each other, spacers having a diameter of about 4 μm are distributed between the opposing surfaces, and a diameter of about 4 μm is provided on four sides of the substrate except for a portion serving as a liquid crystal injection port. A peripheral sealing material made of an epoxy resin containing a small amount of glass fiber is applied, and two substrates are bonded together to produce a liquid crystal cell.
[0039]
Next, a chiral agent is mixed with the nematic liquid crystal to prepare a chiral nematic liquid crystal composition. Note that the pitch can be adjusted by the type of liquid crystal material, the type of chiral agent, and the mixing ratio thereof. Then, after the chiral nematic liquid crystal composition is injected into the liquid crystal cell by using a vacuum injection method, the injection port is sealed with a photocurable resin to manufacture a CL-LCD.
[0040]
The two CL-LCDs manufactured as described above are laminated with the adhesive layer 30 using a transparent adhesive material disposed therebetween, and used as one display device. The selective reflection characteristics of the respective CL-LCDs may be changed to make the color development different. Mainly, the dominant wavelength of selective reflection is shifted by adjusting the ratio between the chiral agent and the liquid crystal material. The selective reflection of the CL-LCD is a narrow band, and one chiral nematic liquid crystal display element can act as a monochromatic color former.
[0041]
In the present invention, by combining the display states of two chiral nematic liquid crystal display elements, it is possible to mix some of the colors and obtain a multi-color rich in design.
[0042]
(Example 1)
A notebook computer was used as the information processing apparatus, and Bluetooth was used as the communication means. A Bluetooth module (UB-6010 (trade name) manufactured by Tokyo Electronics Design Co., Ltd.) was used as the transmission / reception device, and a built-in notebook computer was used.
[0043]
Pre-installed Windows (registered trademark) paint, Photoshop (manufactured by Adobe Systems), Powerpoint (manufactured by Microsoft), etc., and desired image data to fit the screen size of the display device, 320 × 240 pixels BMP image Data (24-bit color) was edited and stored in the built-in hard disk. At this time, the memory capacity of one image required about 230 Kbytes.
[0044]
Next, the BMP image data was converted into display data that can be displayed on a chiral nematic liquid crystal display element. As a specific method, first , an arbitrary threshold value was set for each of the R GB dyes (R, G, and B each 8 bits), and the set threshold value was compared with the intensity of RGB. As a result, RGB colorants were changed from 8 bits to 1 bit, and RGB colors were changed to 8 colors (black, blue, green, cyan, red, magenta, yellow, and white).
[0045]
For example, when the expression color is gray (R, G, B) = (128, 128, 128) in a 24-bit 256-gradation BMP image, if the threshold is set to less than 127, gray is converted to white and the threshold is If is set to 128 or more, gray is converted to black.
[0046]
Next , as shown in Table 1 below, the expression color by RGB is restricted, and attributes corresponding to four colors (black, blue, yellow, white) are added. Thereby, the expression color by RGB is 8 colors. It was converted into four colors that can be displayed on a chiral nematic liquid crystal display element (CL-LCD).
[0047]
As the configuration of the chiral nematic liquid crystal display device, two types of panels (blue panel showing blue color and yellow panel showing yellow color) in which the color developed by selective reflection is almost complementary are prepared, and the back of the panel on the non-observer side A black colored layer was provided on the back side of the side substrate.
[0048]
4 colors (green, cyan, red, magenta) of image data consisting of 8 colors existing in the information processing apparatus are changed from “green to yellow”, “cyan to white”, “red to black”, and “magenta to blue”. The color display is performed with the above-described panel configuration.
[0049]
When displaying by reducing the number of colors, the change was made so that the impression of contrast and the impression of color difference received from the display did not change much. In other words, the color change with less influence was adopted. Of course, other “color change” combinations may be employed for other displays.
[0050]
[Table 1]
[0051]
In addition, when attributes corresponding to the other four colors (black, green, red, and white) are added, as described above, two types of panels (green panel, red) in which coloring by selective reflection is substantially complementary. 4) of the 8 colors (blue, cyan, yellow, magenta) are changed from "blue to black", "cyan to green", "magenta to red", and "yellow to white". You may employ | adopt the combination changed to.
[0052]
The display device used in the present invention is configured by laminating two CL-LCDs. Therefore , the RGB data of the BMP image was converted into display data corresponding to each CL-LCD (blue panel, yellow panel). Table 2 shows given data for each panel corresponding to the pixel expression color of the CL-LCD.
[0053]
[Table 2]
[0054]
When the assigned data in Table 2 was “0”, the panel pixel was set to a non-lighting state, and when it was “1”, the panel pixel was set to a lighting state. Therefore, when both the blue panel and yellow panel pixels are not lit, the display is black, and when both the blue panel and yellow panel pixels are lit, the display is white.
[0055]
Further , the display data converted for the CL-LCD display was confirmed on the screen of a notebook computer. That is, a display image indicating the display state of the blue panel, a display image indicating the display state of the yellow panel, and further, the blue panel and the yellow panel are combined, and the pixels of the BMP image are four colors of white, black, blue and yellow. The display image converted to, was individually displayed on the screen of a notebook computer.
[0056]
The display data converted for the CL-LCD display is transferred to the Bluetooth module via the serial port of the notebook computer. At this time, the data transmission rate was set to 9600 bps,
[0057]
Since the transmission data has 8 pixels on the display screen as 1 byte, if the screen size is 320 × 240 = 76.8K pixels, the required data amount for 1 screen is 9.6K bytes. And for 2 screens, it reached 19.2K bytes.
[0058]
In addition, since the amount of data transferred at one time is 16 bytes excluding the command part, when 9.6K bytes of data for one screen are transferred serially by 16 bytes from the upper left, the transfer is performed 600 times.
[0059]
Furthermore, in Bluetooth, a command can be added to the display data for CL-LCD and transmitted. The display data amount in this case requires 20.4 Kbytes per image.
[0060]
The display device used in the present invention is set to include four memories as storage locations for storing display data. For this reason, if the memory number is designated as required and the display data is transferred to the display device, it is stored in the corresponding memory. In this way, display data corresponding to each color is stored in the memory of the display device, and a desired multi-color display can be easily performed.
[0061]
(Example 2)
When converting data including image information into display data that enables four-color display for each pixel of the display screen of the display device, conversion may be performed using xy chromaticity coordinates.
[0062]
Specifically, the threshold RGB = (0,0,0) which is arbitrarily set data including images information, divided into the color data other than black data and black. Next , in the xy chromaticity coordinates 71 of the CIE XYZ color system shown in FIG. 7, RGB display color data having color data other than black is converted into chromaticity points in a triangular area having RGB as vertexes in FIG. Converted to.
[0063]
Further , when a chiral nematic liquid crystal display element of a blue panel and a yellow panel is used, a chromaticity point obtained by connecting and extending the display chromaticity point B and the white point W is set as a complementary color Y, and data including image information in the region is displayed. The chromaticity point was converted to project vertically on the BY line.
[0064]
Then, by the
[0065]
In this way, in the chiral nematic liquid crystal display device, which is composed of two types of panels exhibiting different dominant wavelength colors by selective reflection, and has a colored layer on the back side of the back side substrate of the non-observer side panel, Display data was created so that display data of various types of panels were synthesized in advance and desired image display was possible. After the display data was created, the same operation as in Example 1 was performed, and the display data corresponding to each color was stored in the memory of the display device, so that a desired multicolor display could be easily performed.
[0066]
(Examples 3, 4, 5)
FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 show the color data of the display data in the cases of Examples 3, 4 and 5, respectively. 3 (a) is blue, (b) is yellow, FIG. 4 (a) is green, (b) is red, FIG. 5 (a) is blue, and (b) is yellow. In FIG. 3, for example, the background is black, the letter “R” is blue, and the letter “OPTREX” is white. In FIG. 4, for example, the background is white, the portion representing smoke is green, the prohibition mark is red, and the character “Chirasmart” is black. In FIG. 5, for example, the background is blue, the letters “Liquid Crystal… Provider” are white, and the letters “OPTREX” are yellow. In this way, a multicolor display of four colors was obtained.
[0067]
(Example 6)
Display data generation how the present invention is shown schematically in FIG. A desired image is color-separated in advance, color information of two panels using a chiral nematic liquid crystal display element is generated by the information processing apparatus 10, and the desired display data 13a and 13b of those two colors is displayed on the display apparatus 11. It is configured to be transferred and accommodated in one of the four memories 14 a, 14 b, 14 c and 14 d built in the display device 11. “B, Y” means color data of “blue, yellow”, respectively. Then, multi-color display is performed on the liquid crystal screen 12. In the display of FIG. 6, the characters “SPRING BARGAIN” are displayed in yellow, “SALE” is displayed in a slightly blackish blue, “30% to 50% OFF” is displayed in a light blue, and the shaded portion and underscore are displayed. The line portion could be displayed in black. The background was set to white.
[0068]
【The invention's effect】
According to the present invention, the display state of each chiral nematic liquid crystal display element of a display device using two stacked chiral nematic liquid crystal display elements having a memory property can be processed at high speed.
[0069]
In addition, since the final display state can be seen immediately, color adjustments can be understood in advance. In addition, since color adjustment and image adjustment in advance are possible, the turnaround time when assembling the display device can be shortened.
In addition, the cycle time for assembling the display device and adjusting the display can be shortened.
