Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image display medium and an image display apparatus, and more particularly to an image display medium that can be rewritten repeatedly and an image display apparatus that displays an image on the image display medium.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, image display media such as Twisting Ball Display (two-color coated particle rotation display), electrophoresis, magnetophoresis, thermal rewritable media, and liquid crystal having memory properties have been used as sheet-like image display media that can be rewritten repeatedly. Proposed.
[0003]
Among such image display media, thermal rewritable media, memory liquid crystal, and the like are excellent in image memory properties, but the image cannot be displayed sufficiently white like paper, so an image is displayed. In such a case, there is a problem that it is difficult to visually confirm the distinction between the portion where the image is displayed and the portion where the image is not displayed, that is, the image quality is deteriorated.
[0004]
An image display medium using electrophoresis or magnetophoresis has a memory property of an image and is a technology in which colored particles are dispersed in a white liquid. In the black display to be formed, a white liquid always enters the gaps between the colored particles, so that there is a problem that the color becomes gray and the image quality deteriorates.
[0005]
Also, since the white liquid is sealed inside the image display medium, the white liquid leaks out of the image display medium when the image display medium is removed from the image display device and handled roughly like paper. There was a problem that there was a fear.
[0006]
In addition, Twisting Ball Display has a display memory property, and oil is present only in the cavity around the particle inside the image display medium, but since it is almost solid, it is relatively easy to form a sheet.
[0007]
However, even when white-coated hemispheres are perfectly aligned on the display side, light entering the gap between the spheres is not reflected and is lost internally, so in principle white display with 100% coverage is possible. There was a problem that it was not possible to do so, and it was slightly grayish.
[0008]
In addition, since the particle size is required to be smaller than the pixel size, fine particles with different colors must be manufactured for high-resolution display, which requires advanced manufacturing techniques. There was also a problem.
[0009]
On the other hand, in order to solve the above problems, as a display technique using toner, a charge transport layer provided on the inner surface of an electrode of a non-display substrate by encapsulating conductive colored toner and white particles between opposing electrode substrates The conductive colored toner is injected into the conductive colored toner through the electrode, and the charged conductive colored toner is moved by the electric field between the electrode substrates to the display substrate located opposite to the non-display substrate. There has been proposed an image display medium that adheres to the inside of a substrate on the display side and displays an image by contrast between conductive colored toner and white particles.
[0010]
Recently, not only conductive colored toner but also a method of using insulating or semiconductive colored particles, a method of directly injecting charges from an electrode without providing a charge transport layer, particles by triboelectric charging. A method for imparting electric charge to the surface has been proposed. It is known that such a display technique using toner or particles is excellent in that the image display medium is entirely composed of solid, and white and black display can be switched 100% in principle.
[0011]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, conventional image display media using toner and particles are only designed to be sandwiched between flat plates such as a glass substrate subjected to a conductive treatment, and sufficient performance has not been established. In particular, the image display medium's physical structure, the image display medium's physical structure for holding toner and particles, the image display medium's electrode structure for achieving optimum driving, and the control of the charged state of the particles. There is a problem that the portion that strongly influences the storage property and storage stability is not sufficient, and sufficient image display cannot always be performed.
[0012]
The present invention has been made in view of the above-described facts, and an object thereof is to provide an image display medium and an image display apparatus that can improve image quality, controllability, reliability, and storage stability.
[0013]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the invention described in claim 1 is characterized in that a pair of substrates and a pair of substrates are enclosed between the pair of substrates so as to be movable in a space between the pair of substrates by an applied electric field, and color. And two types of particle groups having different charging characteristics, the particle groups provided in the space between the pair of substrates and spaced apart from the substrates can pass through the image display medium. A pair of application electrodes is provided.
[0014]
According to this invention, two types of particle groups having different colors and charging characteristics are enclosed in the space between the pair of substrates. By generating an electric field according to image information in the space between the pair of substrates, particles having different colors can be moved between the substrates according to the charged polarity of the particles, and an image can be displayed. In addition, in the space of a pair of board | substrates, at least one can be comprised with insulating resin, a glass substrate, etc. which are either transparent, semi-transparent, and colored transparent, for example. As the particles, in addition to insulating particles, conductive, hole transporting, and electron transporting particles can be used.
[0023]
Applying electrodes of a pair are provided at a distance from the substrate. The application electrode can be, for example, a grid-like electrode through which particles can pass . In this case, when the particles move due to the applied electric field and adhere to the applied electrode, there are particles that pass through the lattice and adhere to the substrate side, and since these particles conceal the applied electrode, the particles can be seen directly, so Can be improved.
[0024]
Such an image display medium can display an image by an image display device provided with voltage control means for applying a voltage according to image information between a pair of application electrodes.
[0025]
The pair of application electrodes may be integrated via an insulating member. Thereby, the structure of the image display medium can be simplified.
