従来のプリントサーバでは、蓄積した印刷データを、指示されたプリンタに適合するデータ形式に変換し、変換した印刷データを指示されたプリンタへ出力すると、その印刷データは消去され、プリントサーバに残されることはなく、印刷データを再利用することは出来ない。
