種々のボックス48とは、例えば、セットトップ・ボックス(ケーブル・ボックスなど)や、TVCR(テレビジョンとVCRとが1つのユニットに組み合わされたもの)である。
Related applications
This application is a continuation-in-part of US Patent Application No. 08/243598 (ongoing) filed on May 13, 1994, which was filed on May 4, 1994. US patent application Ser. No. 08/239225 (ongoing). The disclosures of these US patent applications are all referenced in this application for all purposes.
Background of the Invention
Today, various methods are available for downloading television related information. Much of this information is related to the television schedule guide. A number of different transfer schemes are also available to provide the information required for a television schedule guide. For example, a direct broadcast satellite system (DBS) provides schedule information for television programs via a satellite dish antenna connected to a set top receiver. In addition, general-purpose satellite dish antennas, coaxial cables, telephone lines, optical cables, antennas, and the like are used to distribute schedule information for television programs. For example, a vertical blanking period (VBI) in a television channel or an independent television channel can be used to provide schedule information for a television program.
US Pat. No. 5,353,121 discloses a representative example of an industrially successful system that provides schedule guide information for television programs. U.S. Pat. No. 5,353,121 is also incorporated into the present application for all purposes. In addition, US application Ser. No. 08 / 423,411, filed Apr. 17, 1995, discloses a number of available transfer schemes for television information, which is also incorporated herein by reference for all purposes. Is incorporated.
A system is also provided that allows the subscriber to select a video and display it at that location. One such system uses a touch tone telephone keypad that allows a subscriber's selection to be entered. These systems are available in cable television and are referred to as pay-per-view video systems.
Television software often becomes obsolete or even does not work due to technological advances. Therefore, it may be necessary to add new functions, update software, or modify software programs. In addition, some newly purchased units in television systems (eg, remote control infrared codes required for new VCRs) can cause incompatibility problems. In these situations, a service person must go to the customer's home for repair or renewal, or the customer must take the device to a retail store where the device can be serviced or sent . In both of these situations, the customer suffers to some degree. Therefore, a simpler method of providing this type of service is awaited. Furthermore, if it is desired to provide newly constructed functions, the customer must still replace the functional units with new units to obtain these new functions.
Finally, although the manufacturer can contact (communicate) directly with the customer, this communication is very limited and expensive. For example, the manufacturer can be sent by mail, can be contacted by telephone, can distribute advertisements, or can be commercially broadcast advertisements. Manufacturers can send direct mail and phone calls to customers who have purchased a particular product, but cannot send the manufacturer's television commercials in a similar manner. Therefore, it is desired to provide a system that can display advertisements on a television of a certain customer. Further, as noted above, there is a desire for manufacturers to update, replace, or add television system software to television system software without the need for repair personnel.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention, in the preferred embodiment, is intended to provide a downloadable function, and more particularly to provide such a function to an identified and identified receiver of a television system. Is intended. Functions are as desired by the manufacturer, (1) to correct software faults, (2) to add or update software, (3) to meet the requirements for versatility. . Features can also be ordered by customers responding to television system advertisements, soliciting for these features, and responding to advertisements. For example, advertisements are provided electronically to a particular customer's television (or other electronic product) via a network based on the product's electronic serial number. These software update information can be functionally added to the television system. Data relating to these software update information is compiled and transmitted from the main device (central device) to the customer's electronic product (eg, television) placed on a number of receiving devices. The data is stored in the identified receiving device, and software is used to install the updated information of the stored software. Such storage is typically performed in non-volatile memory or flash RAM. Each receiving device includes a receiver, a memory, and a processor. The receiver receives data related to the update information of these software. The data includes an identifier that identifies at least one of the receiving devices. The memory in each receiving device stores the received data only when the data identifier identifies the receiving device. The processor of the receiving device loads, saves, or executes software update information to the receiving device using the saved data.
These and other advantages will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art upon reading the following detailed description of the invention with reference to the drawings employed.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Software update information type
The present invention provides a scheme for downloading software update information to a television system. A large number of downloadable software update information is generally divided into one or two categories. The first category includes software detection corrections, conformance request fixes, and software updates or additions provided by television manufacturers or third parties. For example, television manufacturers may notice software shortcomings after a model of television is sold and distributed. Manufacturers can easily download new software that corrects software problems in order to correct these shortcomings without confusing consumers who have purchased impaired television models. Is possible. In this case, there is no need for a service person to visit. As another example, the infrared (IR) code may be wrong or in a worn state. The IR code is used to allow interaction between the television and a VCR with a single remote control. Therefore, the correct IR code is required to control both the television and the VCR by television remote control. In such a case, the manufacturer can easily download a new IR code so that the customer has purchased or previously had consistency using the television remote control at the customer's location. It was possible to control VCRs, set top boxes, etc. that were not present. Again, a service person is not required and there is no need to send a remote control device or product for service.
The second category of software update information is for the customer to select software update information that the customer wishes to download or enable to their television system. For example, a customer may want to expand (enhance) the user interface so that a menu or guide on a television screen includes more options. Other examples of these types of software update information include (1) picture-in-picture extensions, (2) channel identification in picture-in-picture screens, and (3) graphic network logos and icons. (4) Enhanced data service (EDS) enhancement (ie upgrade), (5) Stock quote service, (6) Virtual channel service, (7) News -Services, (8) Weather Information Service, (9) Sports Score Service.
Much of the software update information described above already comes with the sold television and only needs to be enabled in the television system. For example, if the user selects to have an icon with the displayed channel identifier, the icon is displayed in the upper left whenever the user selects a new channel. These icons with channel identifiers are normally stored in the television's ROM when the television is sold, but are displayed only when appropriate software is present. . The present invention makes such software downloadable after sale. The downloaded software can also be used to provide additional icons for new networks.
Finally, advertisements about available software updates can be sent to one customer or multiple customers. The advertisement and information associated with the advertisement can be displayed visually on any device having a screen (eg, a television or a computer monitor).

The IR code command specifies a control code used by the remote control to control a specific peripheral device. In the preferred embodiment, peripheral devices include VCRs, set top boxes, TVCs and televisions. This command transmission usually occurs when the consumer has a remote control that is compatible with one of its peripherals. As in the case of other software update information, the IR code is sent to a specific unit via its serial number, or given product code, device type (eg VCR) And / or sent to a group of units having a device ID.
The IR code command shown in FIG. 3 includes a plurality of fields. The first field,

In the preferred embodiment, software update information related to the data is sent in the manner described above under three circumstances. First, data is sent when the manufacturer wants to update the device or wants to automatically fix a software problem. In this situation, no consumer interaction is required. Thus, the data is downloaded into the consumer's television system, but the consumer does not know this for normal maintenance purposes. If desired, the consumer can be provided with a description of all the data downloaded to the television system. If interaction is required, the
